Let's see ... besides this journal, I also have another online journal at my web site, plus my own personal off-line journal, plus an on-going, almost nightly, dialogue with my brother which is an update from me to him regarding the various goings-on in our family (he's in Singapore and we're in Malaysia). I log the dialogue with my brother so that I can track back some things that need to be done, and also as a record of our sibling relationship which has grown closer because of our mother's increasingly frail health. What all these various journals mean is that I have my thoughts and what-nots in different places. Ideally, they should be in one place - my personal off-line journal. Sometimes, if I've written about something in one place, I don't repeat it in another. And that's going to be difficult when I need to check up on something - all these journals to go through! If that's not enough, older journals are in paper format (more than 15 years of those), while the electronic ones are in different e-formats which are still accessible but a little more difficult to get at. Here's an example of why I sometimes need to refer to my journals. Mother was recently admitted to the Pantai Medical Centre. During registration, I was told she'd been admitted before in 1998. This came up again when we took her to see the neurologist who actually had notes from that supposed 1998 stay at PMC! But I have NO memory of this 1998 hospital stay, and I figured it was major enough to be mentioned in my journal. So I checked my 1998 journals, but could not access the entries because they were written in a word processor which I no longer have on my home PC. And while I can open the files with WordPad, there's a lot of code to go through and delete before I can see the actual text. Which I will get to do eventually. I did get from the neurologist that this 1998 hospital stay was supposed to have been in September that year, so I only have the September file to check. As I write the above, I realise yea, fragmented journal. Hmm ... add to that, three households to deal with - well, two and a half - but that's the subject of another online journal entry, and probably not this one. Go figure ... One more thought - fragmented journal ... fragmented life? |
