One of the male helpers at the nursing home where my mother is now living said that Fear Factor is one of the most disgusting shows on TV. The set in the home was in fact tuned into that show when he made that comment. So I said, why don't you change the channel? He didn't seem to hear me. Instead, he sat down and continued to watch, completely mesmerised by what he'd just described a moment ago as "disgusting".
Meanwhile, the residents are absorbed in their own world, not affected at all by what's going on around them. You get the feeling that the TV's tuned to what the helpers want to watch, not the residents. Me, I would select eithe Animal Planet or Discovery Travel & Adventure instead of AXN, for them.
