I posted about my Goals for 2008 at the start of the year. I don't think I ever got around to updating on the status of things have been progressing. (The short of it: fantastically! I have completed almost every goal! And there year isn't yet a quarter over!)
One of the things on my list was to sing karaoke at a bar. The reason is just because it sounded really scary. I like to sing and all, but singing into a microphone in front of strangers sounded like something I couldn't do. So, I decided I had to at least try. Just to see if I could.
A few weeks ago, my sisters and I went to a bar that has karaoke seven nights a week. Lindsey said there was no way she was going to do it. Linda said that she might. I was nervous. Very nervous. Shaky and queasy and agitated. I consumed alcohol. (Probably the equivalent of two shots when it all come down to it.) But then I did it. I first requested "Me & Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin, but the bartender beat me to it! So, my first song was "Creep" by Radiohead. To date, I think it was my best song yet.
That same night, I also sang "Found Out About You" by the Gin Blossoms. That one was a bit of a disappointment. BECAUSE! I had requested "Hey Jealousy," but the guy loaded up the wrong song! I was too shy and nervous to make him change it, so I sang it anyway since I know the song. But I don't know it as well as I know "Hey Jealousy" and there was a part or two that was kind of out of my range. Blarg.
Linda did end up doing two songs as well, and Lindsey did one. So, now we all have sang karaoke in a bar!
This past Friday, the three of us went back for more at Linda's insistence. I had similar nervousness to last time (but not nearly so extreme), and wasn't sure I felt like singing at all. But then I got up the nerve and ended up doing the Dynamite Hack version of "Boyz in the Hood" which went well overall. Later I sang, "Mr Jones" by the Counting Crows. Which... didn't go as well. The tempo was a little off from how I'm used to singing it with the radio.
We are planning to go again within the next few weeks and have Dwayne come along, and we are all planning our next songs so we can practice them ahead of time.
I'm entirely undecided about which songs I want to try next. Most girls at that place choose songs by female vocalists - especially country songs. I prefer male vocalists and like to choose songs a little more... unexpected. And since I'm also strict about wanting to stay well within my range, my choices can be limited. I'll keep thinking it over.
