'...Glenn Greenwald writes today about all the money the telcoms have spent on lobbying this year, (quite a bit more, as it turns out, than the year before if they stay on pace.) Just in the first three months of 2008, recent lobbyist disclosure statements reveal that AT&T spent $5.2 million in lobbyist fees (putting it well ahead of its 2007 pace, when it spent just over $17 million). In the first quarter of 2008, Verizon spent $4.8 million on lobbyist fees, while Comcast spent $2.6 million. So in the first three months of this year, those three telecoms -- which would be among the biggest beneficiaries of telecom amnesty (right after the White House) -- spent a combined total of almost $13 million on lobbyists. They're on pace to spend more than $50 million on lobbying this year -- just those three companies. 13 million bucks is a lot of money. But as I read the numbers, I was struck, once again, by what an incredible bargain these corporations get when they buy off politicians. This money wouldn't even cover executive perks. Verizon has a 1.2 billion dollar advertising budget. Comcast paid 2o million to its CEO alone last year. Here's the deal AT&Ts CEO got: AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson earned about $18 million last year-about $1.2 million in salary and the rest in performance-based bonuses and stock awards, according to BusinessWeek, which does not rely on company figures and uses its own methods to calculate such things. The non-salary compensation included more than $89,000 worth of personal use of a company plane, more than $15,000 for a home security system and more than $10,000 for a club membership.
Lobbying and campaign contributions are tip money to these people and yet politicians are so beholden to them for these financial crumbs that they sell out the American people and the constitution for them. Corporations get the best bargain in the world...' - DIGBY | | 1:40a |
Blackshirts back NAPLES: Plans by Italy's Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, to deal with the rubbish piling up on the streets of Naples ran into trouble when locals clashed with police in an effort to stop the opening of a new dump. Three protesters and six police officers were injured during the demonstration on Saturday night, the ANSA news agency reported. The violence broke out at Chiaiano, on the north-western outskirts of Naples, when about 1000 protesters tried to block access to one of the new dumps that Berlusconi had designated to deal with the crisis. Demonstrators tried to set fire to a bus and hurled rocks at police, who staged a baton charge and fired tear gas. Among those present at the demonstration was Alessandra Mussolini, an extreme right-wing politician and the grand-daughter of Italy's one-time Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini. - SMH article http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/police-and-protesters-clash-over-naples-dump/2008/05/25/1211653847390.html Berlusconi had warned on Wednesday that the new dumps would be declared military zones and protected as such. "Blockade actions organised by minorities will not be tolerated," he said. Anyone who violently demonstrated against the new dumps could face jail terms of up to five years, he added. END EXTRACTS I wasn't sure where the fascist bitch was on this hot button issue - so I googled her name and 'news'. Stand-off in Naples district over rubbish dump (Roundup) Monsters and Critics.com - 24 May 2008 Joining the protestors, were local mayors and Alessandra Mussolini, a parliamentarian elected with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom ... If you stand for nothing... ...you'll fall for anything Well, one can cite anything from old polemics by Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Avakian or whoever to prove whatever. I pay little attention to those things and prefer to see how these things play out in real life. After all, citing musty articles from distant past times and places, out of their historical context isn't a very useful way of carrying on political discussion anyway, as some prefer. It's the same as citing the Bible, which can also be used to prove nearly any political argument one wishes. Look at what Fidel Castro told the U.S. press in 1958 where he opposed nationalization and red-baited Fulgencio Batista: http://www.walterlippmann.com/fc-02-04-1958.htmlWalter Lippmann Los Angeles, California From each according to their gullibility - to each according to their greed | | 2:45a |
The prosecution Max Harris had been prepared to take the hoax "in good part". He believed passionately in the literary merit of the poems and was always ready to defend them against conservative criticism. Suddenly he was called upon to defend them in a court of law - accused of publishing obscene material. The press went to town on the story and suddenly Harris was a figure of high notoriety and ridicule. People jeered in the streets as he attended the courtoom. Some spat at him and even at his young wife-to-be, Yvonne. The court was packed solid as the young avant-garde poet was interrogated about every nuance and metaphorical reference in the surrealist poetry. Part farce and part intense literary debate, there has never been a trial like it. Detective Vogelesang, for the prosecution, insisted that Night Piece was obscene because: "Apparently someone is shining a torch in the dark, visiting through the park gates. To my mind they were going there for some disapproved motive ... I have found that people who go into parks at night go there for immoral purposes". He also found the word "incestuous" indecent in Perspective Lovesong, admitting "I don't know what 'incestuous' means." Harris was subjected to extensive cross-examination by the Crown, called upon to explain the poetry, line by agonising line, sometimes one word at a time. Harris was asked to explain Ern Malley's references to Shakespeare and the contexts whence they were derived. Pericles, Prince of Tyre, reigned high in the Adelaide Police Court. But, however hard the young Harris argued the case for literature and for Malley, the Magistrate would have none of it. Harris was told that he had "far too great a fondness for sexual references" and he was fined 5 pounds in lieu of six weeks in prison. - FROM http://www.ernmalley.com/the_prosecution.html | | 3:19a |
Ukraine turns away from the imperialists The imperialists tried for years to colonize the Ukraine - even using genocide - the holodomor. They're failing. Moscow was perplexed about the decision made by the Ukrainian authorities to ban Moscow mayor Luzhkov from entering Ukraine. Moscow found nothing wrong with Luzkov's calls to start redrawing the Ukrainian map and handing the port city of Sevastopol, Crimea, to Russia. http://kavkazcenter.com/eng/content/2008/05/13/9623.shtml"NATO membership for Ukraine means death for Russia," nationalist publisher Aleksandr Prokhanov has said. At the same time, Russia's ruling elite is acutely aware of its significant geoeconomic interests in Ukraine, particularly since Ukraine and Belarus are the main conduits for Russian hydrocarbon exports to Western Europe. Finally, Putin has a personal stake in the outcome. During Ukraine's 2004-05 Orange Revolution, Putin personally intervened on the side of then-Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, who led the "anti-Orange" camp. The failure of that heavy-handed intervention was presented around the world, including in Russia and Ukraine, as a major foreign-policy fiasco for Moscow. Media reports at the time indicated that the failed effort in Ukraine was coordinated by Putin's then chief of staff, Dmitry Medvedev. - MORE ON http://kavkazcenter.com/eng/content/2008/05/14/9609.shtml | | 3:53a |
More miffed Marxists THE RESULTS of the panchayat polls have silenced the Leftists quite a bit. While the Left Front chairman and the state secretary of the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI - M) stormed out of a press conference as the results at the lower tier started flowing in, the party patriarch, Jyoti Basu, who has been voluble of late on various matters, chose to maintain a stony silence. Basu chose not to comment on the party's significant come down in the three tier panchayat polls concluded recently. All he said was the party would review the elections results. The Marxist icon would be not drawn into any kind of conversation about the Left's showing in the rural polls. He, however, said that the state secretariat had met on Friday to discuss the fall out of the panchayat polls and had despatched letters to the party's district units to send in their reports and analysis of the poll results within a month. The nonagenarian Marxist leader refused to disclose the issues that the secretariat thrashed out and said that the party would not talk about the polls till it had received the reports from the district units, spoken to district leaders and gone through the figures the polls had thrown up. The Left Front fell behind in 4 out of 17 districts in West Bengal in the panchayat polls, including East Midnapore, where it had a strong presence for the past three decades. Nandigram, which has been in the eye of the storm, is located in this district. The zilla parishad seats were taken over by the Trinamool Congress. The Leftists, for the first time, lost a significant number of panchayat samitis and gram panchayats to the opposition Trinamool Congress and the Congress. That the Leftists, Marxist especially, are shaken was obvious from the behaviour of the Left Front chairman and the state secretary Biman Bose who lost his shirt when the panchayat samiti and gram panchayat results came in. He stormed out of a press conference without fielding questions on the Left's loss in areas where it never dreamt it would lose. He told the media gruffly that he had already said the party needs to examine the results in detail before coming to a conclusion. http://www.merinews.com/catFull.jsp?articleID=134606 | | 10:28a |
Civil and human rights are not 'granted' to us Civil and human rights are NOT "given" to us by the State.
'...the Bill of Rights in the first ten amendments to the US Constitution. Rather than a right acquired by custom or demand, the rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights are affirmatively protected by the government as a matter of policy.
They identified eight categories of rights that ALL people regardless of nationality, rank or other status are born with:
Respect: Freedom of choice, equality and recognition
Power: Making and influencing community decisions
Enlightenment: Gathering, processing and disseminating information and knowledge
Well-being: Health, safety and comfort
Skill: Acquisition and exercise of capabilities in vocations, professions and the arts
Affection: Intimacy, friendship, loyalty; positive feelings
Rectitude: Participation in forming the norms of responsible conduct
The National Lawyer's Guild has issued a white paper [warning: pdf download link] in which it calls for the prosecution of Yoo, Bybee, and their ilk, for producing the fallacious torture memos.
The prohibition of torture is a jus cogens norm (these are principles of international law so fundamental that no nation may ignore them or attempt to contract out of them through treaties). The United States has consistently prohibited the use of torture through its Constitution, laws, executive statements and judicial decisions and by ratifying international treaties that prohibit it. The prohibition against torture applies to all persons in U.S. custody in times of peace, armed conflict, or state of emergency. In other words, the prohibition is absolute.
You see, there are some rights so fundamental that they come to us simply from being human; they are NOT "given" to us by the State. Thomas Jefferson mentioned a few in the Declaration of Independence: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness...' - FIREDOGLAKE
The most enlightened states recognize some of our inalienable human and civil rights. Since the decline of the dark ages it's become the consensus view that governments rule with the consent of the governed. This notion may be traced back to the mini-rennaissance and Magna Carta and is threatened by the rise of a Gilead police, Zionist colonialism and Islamofascism. Now although anarchist numbers remain small I think there is still a case for a few of taking head-shots at the worlds biggest and most dangerous empires. And not 'top-of-the-head' punchs against competitive market capitalism, rather short, sharp jabs against the weakest legs of state power. The unpopular notions/processes of God and the State. Later for predatory monopoly Capital. This is not a call for a return to exact trad propaganda-of-the-deed, but a PoD informed by use of the net combined with a little post-left theory that should hone or rehone our inbuilt hunter-seeker instincts. Hunter-killer instincts were developed with us as we evolved over tens of thousands of years without a state over us. Power concedes nothing without the demand so its time for us to demand the minimization of authoritarian power over people. In many places this will take the form of the ambit claim for the complete deconstruction of all state power. And if we can harness the giant worm of the general-will we may yet ride to victory. If people are truly tired of Platos caves and Fritzels dungeons as well as endless quasi-religious wars then we should know victory soon. Real soon. Death to God and the State. Gilead state goon-squad '...Jesus plus nothing: Undercover among America's Secret Theocrats in the March 2003 Harpers. Digby more recently has called it: to this day one of the more chilling articles I've ever read about the intersection of politics and religion in this country. The facts in the article are true but they are so bizarre that I think people discounted it because it's almost impossible to believe. This week, Jeff Sharlet’s book on The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power was published – and it is even more chilling – and more important. Jeff is a contributing editor for Harpers and Rolling Stone and a founder of the recently retired Killing the Buddha and co-author of the book by the same name. His insatiable curiosity combines with a respect and appreciation of spiritual journeys in writing that never shies away from the hard truths yet never denigrates the believer.
Jesus plus nothing was an account of the time Jeff spent at Ivanwald, one of the houses in Washington DC run by the “Fellowship” where he was welcomed into their prayer community. His new book takes us beyond his stay to explore the historical roots of the Fellowship in the early American Awakening of the 1730s and the breadth of power the Fellowship has acquired. The Fellowship is often called a “stealth church” and only catches the public eye once a year during the National Prayer Breakfasts which it hosts. Its leader, Doug Coe is described by Time magazine’s February 8, 2008 issue as one of The 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America. These events – which use the trappings of the Presidential office and congress – are seen by outsiders as rather “bland” civic religion, stripped of denominational involvement (though at least one Jewish leader has commented on his surprise at the Christian focus given the setting). As Sharlet reports, the Prayer Breakfast movement is the one public face to a much deeper and more secretive organization. While the Prayer Breakfasts are “nondenominational,” Coe and the Fellowship have a very specific goal. Sharlet describes it in his 2006 article God's Senator on Sen Brownback as follows: They were striving, ultimately, for what Coe calls "Jesus plus nothing" -- a government led by Christ's will alone. In the future envisioned by Coe, everything -- sex and taxes, war and the price of oil -- will be decided upon not according to democracy or the church or even Scripture. The Bible itself is for the masses; in the Fellowship, Christ reveals a higher set of commands to the anointed few. It's a good old boy's club blessed by God...'

Viva Bill Leak, Viva! Bill Leak has a cartoon in the Austrian today that has the NSW plod arresting Michaelangelo. In the same paper Marr remembers that Portnoys Complaint was banned here. ( I remember reading an underground copy in 1970) Later in the seventies came a bizzare case against the old Third World bookshop in Elizabeth st. They were ordered to remove a poster of Michaelangelo's ' David' from the front window. Some very old battles need to be fought again as the Gileads look like they are using the police state methods against first Australians as a dry run for what they have in store for the rest of us. If Austrians don't want to become a puppet of the US Gilead empire then we have to arm ourselves now and fight. Pure essence of Leninist hemlock The idea was that factional differences in the group reflect the class struggle. But this can exacerbate divisions, and become an excuse for a sectarian mentality, and I see a danger of that when you write: “On one side you have those who have begun to adapt to petty bourgeois ideas and impulses, while on the other side you have those who refuse to adapt and remain true to Marxist criteria and methodology.” But who defines what are “Marxist criteria”? This can become an invitation to readers to disregard your opponents’ arguments in advance, since they are defined as “petty bourgeois”. - FROM Leftwrites http://www.leftwrites.net/2008/05/12/split-in-dsp/#more-1239Leninism continues to haunt the minds of many revolutionaries of more or less good will who are searching for a recipe capable of success. Persuaded that they are "of the vanguard" because they possess "consciousness", whereas they only possess a false theory, they struggle militantly for a union of those two metaphysical monstrosities, "a spontaneous working class movement, bereft of any theory" and a disembodied "socialist consciousness." When Lenin became more pseudo-radical, he denounced Kautsky as a heretic, and put himself forward as the only true interpreter of Marx. When Kautsky criticized Lenin's theses, the Bolsheviks heaped abuse on Kautsky. Lenin's succint comment was: 'Why should I respond to Kautsky? If I did that, the Kautsky would respond to my response, and then I would have to respond to his response, and so on. All I have to do is say that Kautsky is an enemy of the people, and everyone will understand everything.' | | 11:36a |
Russia Under the imperialist Lenin this rapidly became the land from which no traveller returned.
At Kropotkin’s funeral the black flag of anarchism was paraded through Moscow for the last time. Two weeks later the Kronstadt rebellion broke out, and a new wave of political arrests swept the country. Anarchist book stores, printing offices, and clubs were closed and the few remaining anarchist circles broken up. Even the pacifist followers of Tolstoy – a number of whom had been shot during the Civil War for refusing to serve in the Red Army – were imprisoned or banished. In Moscow a circle of leading “Soviet anarchists” known as the Universalists were arrested on trumped-up charges of “banditry and underground activities,” and their organization was replaced by a new group called the “Anarcho-Biocosmists,” who pledged unwavering support of the Soviet government and solemnly declared their intention to launch a social revolution “in interplanetary space but not upon Soviet territory.” Repression continued unabated as the months advanced. In September 1921, the Cheka executed two well-known anarchists without a trial and without bringing formal charges against them. Emma Goldman was so outraged that she considered making a scene in the manner of the English suffragettes by chaining herself to a bench in the hall where the Third Comintern Congress was meeting and shouting her protests to the delegates. She was dissuaded from doing so by her Russian friends, but soon afterward she and Berkman, profoundly disheartened by the turn the revolution had taken, made up their minds to leave the country. “Grey are the passing days,” Berkman recorded in his diary. “One by one the embers of hope have died out. Terror and despotism have crushed the life born in October. The slogans of the Revolution are foresworn, its ideals stifled in the blood of the people. The breath of yesterday is dooming millions to death; the shadow of today hangs like a black pall over the country. Dictatorship is trampling the masses under foot. The Revolution is dead; its spirit cries in the wilderness … I have decided to leave Russia.”

Kicked off anarchobase for less The Afghan jihad allowed militants to overcome the rivalry among militants that existed along national and ethnic lines. Overcoming these divisions and forging Pan-Arab and Pan-Islamist unity were some of the main strategies of Bin Laden and Zawahiri in the construction of their organization that was to become the violent "World Islamic Front for Jihad against Crusaders and Jews" or commonly known as Al-Qaeda, meaning "The Base," formed in 1998. Initially for Bin Laden, Zawahiri, and others, Afghanistan was the base for international jihad, today it is mainly Iraq... These political shifts culminated in the establishment of Al-Qaeda and many other organizations that share their military vanguardist outlook, and many more yet that share their political aims of an Arab world free from Western domination.... Islamists have always been at the forefront of the struggle against colonialism and neo-colonialism in the Middle East since the times of the Crusades. Most academics, policy makers, and those who support the independence and development of the Arab world have some knowledge of the post-Second World War period when Islamist movements were supported by those who saw them as a counterweight to the secular anti-imperialist movements of various Arab Nationalists and Marxist trends. - FROM http://www.marxmail.org/msg42042.html@ndy might reconsider his kneejerk Leninism that even outdoes Proyect - after all the Taliban have a good record in controlling prostitution...@ndy? The great terror Stalins great terror isn't often linked with Spain - shouldn't it?
Also ' identity politics' is supposed to be some sort of leftist insult. Yet what is this latest DSP split about, if not identity? After all , if you see yrself as a revolutionary it is difficult, if not impossible to keep seeing yrself as one in a squalid bourgeois capitalist enterprise increasingly devoted to parliamentary imbecility. The last remotely revolutionary activity of the DSP I noted was the march on the Sunshine cop shop. That was several years ago now so the great terror of todays DSP is somehow being mistaken for revolutionary. Rhetorical bluster and posturing regarding some Peronist and Stalinist regimes on the other side of the planet while ignoring a very real revolution in Nepal is objectively counter-revolutionary. The DSP as a capitalist publishing house and a major force behind the parliamentary imbecility is clearly counter-revolutionary. That is why all those who identify as revolutionary are leaving in droves. Identity politics is not a dirty pair of words. Ego is not a dirty word. Slaving away for reactionaries is a filthy business that no real revolutionary can rationalize. ( Just my 2c) | | 2:52p |

Paraletic Paraguay in literature
Beginning in the fictional seaport of "Bideford Quay" near the real Bideford in North Devon during the reign of Elizabeth I, Westward Ho! follows the adventures of Amyas Leigh, an unruly child who as a young man follows Francis Drake to sea. Amyas loves local beauty Rose Salterne, as does nearly everyone else. Much of the novel involves the kidnap of Rose by a Spaniard. Amyas spends time in the Caribbean seeking gold, and eventually returns to England at the time of the Spanish Armada, finding his true love in the process; yet fate had blundered and brought misfortune into Amyas's life, for Amyas loses his brother Frank Leigh and Rose Salterne, which two were caught by the Spaniards and were burnt alive. - WIKIPEDIA
The Australian socialists, led by William Lane who attempted a commune in Paraguay, the 'New Australia' were said to have a copy of this Charles Kingsley imaginary book on them and little else on arrival in Paraguay. ( According to John Gimlette ) Another pair of writers mentioned in connection with Paraguay are Richard Burton and Conrad through his ' Nostromo'. Mind you fiction barely does the place justice with extravagant characters such as José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia and Francisco Solano Lopez running around loose. Police torture suspects here Three former police officers convicted of bashing a suspect have pleaded guilty to attempting to mislead an Office of Police Integrity hearing into the assault. Mark Harrison Butterfield, Robert Lachlan Dabb and Matthew Adrian Franc were members of the now disbanded armed offenders squad when they kicked, slapped and punched a man during questioning over an armed robbery in May 2006. The trio fronted an OPI hearing later that year and denied assaulting the man. But in March they pleaded guilty to assault and were convicted and ordered to serve an intensive corrections order after secret footage of the attack was played during the public OPI hearings. They today faced another six charges relating to attempting to mislead the hearing. Phillip Priest, QC, for the three men, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court the charges could have been taken into account when the men were sentenced for the assault. He said in a deal done with the prosecution it was envisaged the men would not receive a separate conviction or penalty for the OPI charges. Mr Priest and Senior Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, both submitted the men should not receive any punishment beyond a conviction. But Magistrate Peter Lauristen rejected their submissions and indicated that while the men would be spared an immediate prison sentence he would order them to serve an intensive corrections order. Five charges were struck out and Dabb, 36, Butterfield, 38, and Franc, 38, each pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to mislead the hearing. Chuck Munson killed by cyclone A simple Twister fate...if theres any warming justice
"We've definitely had an unusually high death toll, which is the misfortune of having tornadoes hitting population centres," said Roger Edwards, a meteorologist at the Storm Prediction Centre in Norman, Oklahoma. Tornado season in the US peaks in spring and early summer but twisters also pose a threat in the fall. Added to the two people killed on Saturday in Kansas when their car was swept up and tossed by a tornado generated by the same storm system, there have been more than 100 people killed in the US by tornadoes so far this year. | | 7:59p |
The good ship Barnacle The barnacle has the longest penis for its size than any animal asaik. Calling someone ' Barnacle' down here is like calling a red-head ' Bluey'...or John Howard ' Honest'.
What happened to the DSP?
Seriously, Barnacle, you do say some of the most ridiculous and factually incorrect things, while also abandoning any attempt at logical reasoning: Firstly, the LPF did not exist in October 2005, as you are well aware (we only formed in Jan 2006 after you and your co-thinkers voted for a motion telling those who supported the minority position to form a faction and then when we did you all jumped up and down about it - talk about damned if you and do and damned if you don't !!)
Secondly, given that the LPF did not exist in October , then the LPF as a whole could not have assessed that the DSP (as a whole) had "abandoned the traditions and language of revolutionary Marxism and ceased to be Leninist".
But please, don't let facts or logical reasoning get in the way of a good beatup ....
Thirdly, do you really seriously think if we had made such an assessment in early 2006 as a faction, we would have bothered to have stayed in the DSP for another two years?
Perhaps you think we are masochists and enjoyed being vilified, slandered and having lies being told about us at every turn, having our political work limited and/or micro-managed, while also be ostracised and treated politically and personally like crap by our so-called comrades?
Perhaps you think we enjoyed having trumped up charges laid against us (such as the one by outlined in the House Committee of UnDSP activities against me in relation to CLASS)?
Yes, of course, Barnacle, thats why I stayed in the DSP for those two years!
It was ever, ever, so much fun to be treated this way by our "comrades", simply because we had serious political differences.
Of course, it had nothing to do with the fact that we had a serious political differences and we thought the principled and political thing to do was to make our difference known and politically try and win comrades to our perpectives because we believed that the majority of the DSP were still Marxists and Leninists and would be open to solid political argumentation and reasoning.
Fourthly, "liquidationism" is not "a code word for all Marxists for abandoning Leninism and Marxism".
It is a precise political term, which has a precise political meaning. It is not a "code word" (but how liberal of you, Barnacle, to think it is such a thing!).
Fifthly, as you well know Barnacle, we explicitly stated that we did not think the DSP was liquidating at the time but we did believe there was a danger of it should the DSP continue to implement and deepen the Socialist Alliance tactic.
But instead of trying to discuss this in a logical and calm manner, you and your co-thinkers labelled us "hostile" in May of 2006 (as Owen points outs it was the DSP leadership who made categorical assessments as early as 2006, not the LPF). But I guess, Barnacle, that you and your co-thinkers never had to bother to take the concerns of LPF comrades, some of whom had dedicated up to 35 years of their life to building the DSP seriously because the DSP is the only party in the world who will never, ever, ever, have to worry bout the possibility of liquidationism, because you and your co-thinkers passed a motion in 2005 saying that despite the priniciples of dialecticalism this could never, ever happen to the DSP comradely, Kim B In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act - George Orwell END EXTRACT ' Barnacle' is also known as the nasty spammer ' glparramatta' and on the marxmail list as Norm Dixon. Fall of Troy Susan Maushart: Soupcons and swansongs "Laura and I are rootin' for ya," declared George W. Bush with a wink to understandably nonplussed game show contestant Joseph Kobes. The Leader of the Free World was making a cameo appearance on Deal or No Deal last month in a surprise surge of support for Kobes, a much-decorated Iraq war vet. A few seconds’ direct exposure to Bush and the army transport officer – who had survived three tours of duty in Iraq – tanked. So, too, did the show’s ratings, plunging 27 per cent below its season average. Days later, pundits were still trying to figure out what Bush was thinking, or even whether. Only Jay Leno’s explanation – that he’d been rejected by Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? – seemed to fit the facts. At the same time, Bush’s personal box-office has been setting new records, too. Polls this month by CNN and Gallup found he had the highest disapproval rating in presidential polling history, with seven out of 10 Americans voting “No Deal!” In the same week that Bush was taking US presidential politics to a record-breaking low, WA Opposition leader and seat-sniffer Troy Buswell was doing his bit here in the dear old State of Excitement, proving that when it comes to immaturity, egotism and sheer bad taste, WA really can compete on the world stage.
After 13 statements describing as “unsubstantiated rumour” the allegation that he’d sniffed appreciatively at the vacated chair of a female staffer, Buswell finally snapped – much like the bra of another staffer he admitted tampering with as a “party trick” last year. Yes, he told a breathless media. He’d inhaled.
Buswell describes himself as a practising Catholic – in a sense, he was only undoing unto others – and a family man. In a profile written just before the seat-sniffing story broke, he told The West Australian: “I cannot see myself as a person who has a massively long career in politics.” And he can smell which way the wind is blowing, too. Whether attempts to re-upholster his political future will succeed is anyone’s guess, though party stalwarts who looked to him as a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stiflingly flatulent state opposition have had their noses put out of joint. In all likelihood, he’ll hang about like a bad smell until the next election, when he gets a whiff of his own medicine and party sniffer dogs are loosed on his own … how you say? … marginal seat. | | 8:32p |
Bushbashing Oscar-winner Jessica Lange bashed the Bush administration and denounced the war in Iraq during a commencement address at Sarah Lawrence College. The star of "Tootsie" and "Blue Sky" was applauded by students Friday at the small liberal arts college after comparing the conflict with the Vietnam War. She said the graduates have a heavy burden to chart a new path for the country. "We are living in an America that, in the last seven and a half years, has waged an unnecessary war, established prison camps, condoned torture, employed corporate armies, eliminated the right of habeas corpus, practiced extraordinary rendition, and believe me, this is only a partial list," Lange said. Lange asked the graduates, including her 22-year-old daughter Hannah Shepard, to commit themselves to the pursuit of peace. | | 8:45p |
Labor not all boring as batshit Xtians Mr McCubbin last year supported a group called The Beautiful Losers as a headline act of the festival in Sale, a regional centre in the electorate. The group's adverts feature a blow-up sex doll. Mr McCubbin last night confirmed his promotion of The Beautiful Losers, but said it was "only a fringe show which had a handful of people who attended". "It was offered to the festival after Bob Downe was unable to confirm his attendance," Mr McCubbin said.
"It came to us as an award-winning adult comedy and we advertised it as an adult show. At the moment the people of Sale are receiving their fourth tour of Puppetry of the Penis after surviving The Vagina Monologues." The theatre act was described ina newspaper review in the following terms: "The Beautiful Losers" consists of "of three men, a piano and a guitar. Not to mention some very wrong and rather amusing lyrics about all manner of depravity". The approving review continued: "The beauty of the loser tales is in the singing of the three performers, Mark Jones, Adam Murphy and Karlis Zaid. "They sing with the voice of choirboys, which serves as a hilarious contrast to their songs about kinky sex practices, "double-f..king black studs" and a man's "relationship' with a peepshow girl. "It's hard to miss the irony of someone singing so earnestly about having his cock stroked at a medium pace. In all likelihood, I have already assaulted the readers' sensibilities with all this dirty talk, but it's nothing compared to the content of the song lyrics in this show, so consider yourselves warned. "The trio sing and dance its way through the perspective of the stalker, deviant, pervert and all other manner of freak. and the constant onslaught was a little too much for this delicate flower. "If only they would use their writing and singing talents for a bit more good in with the evil. Don't take your nana to see The Beautiful Losers. but anyone who might appreciate a comic musical version of Law and Order is likely to enjoy the show. "Audience participation is mainly limited to a sing-a-long of Kevin Bloody Wilson's Hey Santa Claus, which is in deliberate poor taste and intended to make otherwise respectable people use the C-word. Maybe this is a device to show there's a little of the beautiful loser in all of us." The act's online blurb goes further: "They're ugly and their personal hygiene leaves something to be desired -- but they're piss funny and 100 per cent f..ked up!" it says. "The cult hit of the 2005 Melbourne Fringe is about to be unleashed on the Melbourne Comedy Festival. A freak-fest featuring a cast of necrophiliacs, murderers, chronic masturbators, prison bitches and Jesus freaks! Hear twisted tunes of the likes of Bowie, Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, King Missile and Kevin "Bloody" Wilson. "Don't call these boys cabaret! Just f..kin' don't! They do for cabaret what Ozzy Osbourne did for bats. 81 per cent more satisfying than punching a Wiggle. You'll laugh, then feel a bit wrong, then laugh again!" Poison Dwarf | | 8:48p |
Million gay march More than a million gays and transsexuals have paraded in Brazil's business capital Sao Paulo in what was billed as the world's largest gay march to urge an end to violence and discrimination. DJs blasted dance music from trucks that drove up and down the city's skyscraper-lined main avenue as people in the dense crowds danced and celebrated on a hot, sunny day, some wearing wigs, masks and carnival-style outfits. "I don't suffer prejudice because I'm usually very discreet but today I'm living the moment," said Junior Antenor, 21, wearing a winged silver-and-white angel outfit. "Here in the centre of Sao Paulo, for today, everyone can do what they like." According to witnesses, the event attracted at least one million participants. Police declined to give an official crowd count although one officer on the scene estimated more than 3 million people took part and the Sao Paulo Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgenders Parade Association said attendance was more than 5 million. This is the 12th year the parade has been staged. Sao Paulo authorities and Brazilian oil firm Petrobras backed the event, which has become a big money-earner for the city and for tourism in Latin America's biggest country. "This is the diversity the country wants, the diversity that we have to foster as a country seeking a tourist niche among the gay community," Tourism Minister Marta Suplicy, a former Sao Paulo mayor, said aboard one of the trucks. The parade association is also supporting plans by Sao Paulo's Commerce Federation, Fecomercio, to certify retailers and service providers who respect diversity of race, ethnic origin, physical difference and sexual orientation. On a visit last year to Brazil, the world's most populous Catholic country, Pope Benedict attracted fewer than 1 million when he spoke out against homosexuality and called for traditional family values to be reinforced. Wow - over a million! This calls for an erection on behalf of Nick Cave. | | 8:54p |
Klaatu barada nikto It is unlikely that George Soros, Japanese anarchists and William Shatner have much in common - except, perhaps, for their shared study of Esperanto, the "international auxiliary language" now more than 120 years old and being heavily promoted by activists in Hokkaido, Japan in advance of this summer's G8 summit. Invented in 1887 by Dr Ludovic Lazarus Zamenhof, Esperanto is a constructed language with Romanic and Germanic roots, Belarussian phonology, and Slavic semantics. The young ophthalmologist wanted an intermediary language to break through the language barriers that pervaded his home region in Poland, where different ethnic and linguistic groups lived in relative isolation from one another - an isolation that bred fear, suspicion and occasional violence. There have been many attempts to spread the word (or vorto in Esperanto), but the latest spurt of enthusiasm comes from among contemporary anti-capitalist organisers hoping to use it to facilitate international action. The Esperanto League for Freedom in Hokkaido (Libera Esperanto-Asocio en Hokkajdo), one of the many Japanese groups co-ordinating the anti-G8 summit protests, explains that it sees Esperanto as a "symbol of equality and internationalism". Its goals are twofold: first, to see Esperanto used to aid communication between Japanese and foreign activists; and second, for the anti-G8ers movement to stimulate study of the language. Many of the documents produced by the Japanese anti-G8 groups have online translations in English and Esperanto, and the Hokkaido-based Esperantists have put out international calls for groups to study and practise the language in the days leading up to the 7-9 July summit. The calls echo those from a growing number of Esperanto study groups around the world from Brazil to South Korea. Attempting to establish a common language is a tactic, but also reflects an ideology - an attempt to subvert the linguistic hierarchy of dominant languages. Activists argue that, just as the combined populations of the G8 countries, which rule the world, are a mere 14 per cent of the world's total, so native speakers of English, which dominates the spoken word, constitute little more than 5 per cent of the world's population.
Computer-savvy anti-capitalists have found that open-source software - including Linux, Open-Office, and Mozilla - has worked with Esperanto since 2003. Indymedia, the independent media resource, is talking about switching from English to Esperanto for international communications. The Finnish linguist Jouko Lindstedt estimates that 10,000,000 people worldwide have studied Esperanto. Though it is most accessible to native speakers of Indo-European languages, Esperanto has always found fervent supporters in Asia (Japanese anarchists used Esperanto to communicate with European counterparts before the First World War). In China, as long ago as 1913, the country's first anarchist journal, La Voco de la Popolo, was released in Esperanto. The totalitarian regimes of Hitler and Stalin considered Esperanto "dangerous" and executed or imprisoned prominent Esperantists. In Mein Kampf, Hitler denounced the language as a tool of the international Jewish conspiracy; Stalin claimed it was "the language of spies". In March this year, the German activist Martin Kraemer was denied entry into Japan by authorities at the port of Sapporo-Otaru, where he arrived playing "The Internationale" on his trumpet, having been invited by Sapporo's Esperanto League to help prepare for the anti-G8 summit protests. Is it a contradiction for "anti-globalisation" activists to desire a global means of communication? Not really. The opposite of globalisation isn't isolation. The Esperanto League for Freedom in Hokkaido explains: "While the enemy is pushing forward the pace of globalisation, it is increasingly important for us to march ahead together and realise an internationalised solidarity." In this spirit, Esperantists from Hokkaido travelled to South Korea in December 2007 to assist in establishing a new Korean group of militant Esperantists. As they say in Esperanto: "Alia mondo estas ebla!" (Another world is possible!). END ARTICLE

Well burrowed old Nazbol! Kurt Saxons of the world unite - you have nothing to lose but yr chain male Inside the Gates: the Vietnamese Miltary Fortress By Bay Area National Anarchist on May 25, 2008 12:28 AM | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0) The Military Fortress is a designation by the North Vietnamese Army to thwart the Chinese invasion.*
"A new concept has been devised to meet this contingency - called the Military Fortress. While new and innovative, it does have roots in the "combat village" of the Vietnam war and the still earlier "fortified village" of the Viet Minh War. The Military Fortress concept presently involves some two dozen North Vietnamese districts that abut China... that are to be welded into one contiguous defensive structure. Each village of the district is to become a "combat village," linked in tactical planning terms to neighboring villages, the entire district thus becomes a single strategic entity, and all the districts together become a grand Military Fortress. Villagers are armed, and all have combat duties... Each villager spends a part of each day training and working on fortifications, for which he gets extra rations. The work includes digging the usual combat trench foxhole, trench, bunker, underground food and weapons storeroom, and the ever present "vanishing underground" installation, the hidden tunnel complex. These were within the village. Some distance out, usually two or three kilometers, is what is called the "distant fortification," a second string of interlocking trenches, ambush bunkers, manned by well-equipped paramilitary troops serving full time. Several villages (usually about five) are tied together by communication systems and fields of fire into "combat clusters" (about seven per district), and the whole becomes a strategic entity."
It is interesting to note that the Military Fortress (in the Vietname concept) has used against three different threats and has been refined against each one. In time, it wouldn't surprise me if many parts of the United States begin to resemble this. This method of operations would seem suitable as a NAZ objective to emulate.

Victoria is kidding itself Regardless of his faults as an administrator, NSW Premier Morris Iemma, was speaking good sense and from long experience when he said recently: "Any jurisdiction (that) doesn't have an ICAC-type body is, in my view, just crazy. If you don't have one, you have either discovered a secret to human nature that has eluded the rest of us or, as is more likely to be the case, you are just kidding yourself." Victoria is a prime example. For four years, The Australian has argued the need for a powerful, independent agency to identify and root out corruption among police and their associates in Victoria. Earlier this year, a damning finding against senior police was tabled in the Victorian parliament. In it, the Office of Police Integrity laid bare a culture of professional jealousy, corruption, negligence, collusion and abuse of authority. Questions also remain about a secret, backroom pay deal between the police union and the Victorian Government in the lead-up to the last state election and police handling of the state's deadly gangland wars that killed 24 people. Fears that the restructure of Victoria's pokies industry could open the door to organised crime could also provide scope for an independent watchdog, able to compel witnesses to give evidence. Victoria's refusal to establish such a body has long perturbed The Australian...' - FROM http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23756034-16741,00.html | | 10:36p |
The one-armed swordsman "There seems to be a general belief that we are opposed to all Governments. Certainly we are opposed to all existing forms of government. But you see, the only government we know is a mixture of subjection, roguery and robbery. Governments of today govern the people whereas our government is a government of the people, for the people ..... We are credited with a passion for destruction but I should like our opponents to note what we would destroy - theft, slavery, misery and starvation of body and mind. The doctrine of Anarchism is almost identical with the doctrine of advanced Socialism, what some people call, Scientific Socialism ......" - FROM http://www.takver.com/history/petrie.htm |
