You are The Empress

Beauty, happiness, pleasure, success, luxury, dissipation.

The Empress is associated with Venus, the feminine planet, so it represents,
beauty, charm, pleasure, luxury, and delight. You may be good at home
decorating, art or anything to do with making things beautiful.

The Empress is a creator, be it creation of life, of romance, of art or business. While the Magician is the primal spark, the idea made real, and the High Priestess is the one who gives the idea a form, the Empress is the womb where it gestates and grows till it is ready to be born. This is why her symbol is Venus, goddess of beautiful things as well as love. Even so, the Empress is more Demeter, goddess of abundance, then sensual Venus. She is the giver of Earthly gifts, yet at the same time, she can, in anger withhold, as Demeter did when her daughter, Persephone, was kidnapped. In fury and grief, she kept the Earth barren till her child was returned to her.

A Star is Born [08 Mar 2008|07:49am]
[ music | Edith Piaf - La Vie En Rose ]

Marion Cotillard, bongga ka 'day!

I almost shrieked out of sheer surprise when Ms. Cotillard was declared as Best Actress for her powerhouse performance in La Vie En Rose, a biopic of the French legendary chanteuse singer, Edith Piaf. I wasn't expecting her to win at all. I thought it was either Cate Blanchett (to compensate for her loss in 1998 in favor of Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love) or Julie Christie (because she's won in the Screen Actor's Guild Awards). She's this year's epitome of a dark horse. Nobody knew her, nobody cared to watch her movie. And now they know what they missed.

La Mome or more popularly known as La Vie En Rose. It was titled after Edth Piaf's hit, which became France's signature song and had been used in many movies, most memorably in Audrey Hepburn's Sabrina.

I just love her; she's such a darling! And she's so gorgeous. She kinda reminds me of Aishwarya Rai and Monica Belluci (who could have also taken the Oscars by storm given the right projects. Where is she anyway?!). She sounds so sultry and seductive. Here is a clip of her singing Badam Badam Badam (by, of course, Ms. Piaf) in an Oscar press conference just after winning Best Actress.

And don't you just love her in a mermaid gown by Jean Paul Gaultier (the same dude who designed Madonna's famous cone bra nyahahahaha!)? I wasn't so hot on the gown at first, but she definitely carried it well and pulled it off so props to you, girl friend!

Marion has yet to prove herself as a consistent brilliant actor. This is her first well-known movie to date anyway. But considering how her role in La Vie En Rose is so tough physically and emotionally and her character has so many layers, she did a very amazing job. Undeniably though, she's rose to super stardom overnight.

As for the Oscars. What a bore. Very uneventful. I'm not really so big on Jon Stewart hosting this show. I'd rather see Ellen Degeneres. Good thing though ABS-CBN aired it. A lot of first timers were able to watch it. I have not missed a single show since 1995. Umaabsent pa talaga ako dati para lang makanood live nyahaha! Pinatawag pa dati mom ko sa principal's office because I missed our highschool graduation practice for this hehehe!

Best dressed for me was Anne Hathaway who was very elegant in a red gown.

Jennifer Garner, who I started loving after seeing Juno, was also fabulous.

And two divine ladies, the very preggie Cate Blanchett and the hot mama Helen Mirren, who both played Queen Elizabeth I with so much power and conviction, were very classy.

Worst dressed? Definitely Tilda Swinton. Nakakagalit lang grrrrr!!! She's so beautiful hindi man lang nag-ayos ayos! Nanalo pa man din siya! Sana she had come as the White Witch Jadis in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe na lang!

Juno [08 Mar 2008|06:04pm]
[ music | Michael Cera and Ellen Page - Anyone Else But You ]

Juno is a simple but touching movie about teenage unwanted pregnancy. The movie is without unnecessary dramatics, but it doesn't mean to say that it trivializes the issue. The effects of teen pregnancy is just not the film's concern. If you want that kind of story, just talk to Janice de Belen (or Camille Pratts or Valerie Concepcion or your 16 year old cousin for that matter). Nyahahha!

Juno's story is about letting go, admitting that you're not ready for it, and that doesn't make you a bad, criminal person. That motherhood doesn't begin with a bulging tummy. It starts in the heart, the desire to mother a baby. Charot! What do I know about motherhood nyahahaha! What I truly like about it was how Juno and her boyfriend still ended up together, and how the incident made them grow and stronger for each other.

The movie has interesting characters, maybe not the most realistic ones, but they're human. Ellen Page did a good job playing Juno. Her scene with the boyfriend in the hospital bed broke my heart. I'm not sure about her Oscar nomination though, I have to see Keira Knightley in Atonement to know if she deserves it more. Jason Bateman looks cute, and he has this daddy aura that I liked hihihiih!! The funniest character for me was Allison Janney. From the dog picture cutting to her "Welll, I am a nail technician." Nyahahaha hilarious! But it was Jennifer Garner who really wowed me. Aside from Juno's it's her character that was well developed and multi-layered, and she did an amazing job with her subtle performance. You can feel her joy, excitement, fear and nervousness in her one liner, "How do I look?" I didn't care much about her, but I love her in Juno. I was kinda hoping she'd get a Best Supporting Actress nomination.

But the hype for this movie was just a little too much. Sure, it's good, but it's not THE movie of the year. The script is kind of witty, but it's not anywhere near CLEVER. Don't get me wrong, I really liked it, but I just take the movie for what it is. It's good, but not anywhere near brilliant. It has some boring parts, some lines were just so trying hard to sound smart-aleck that it just fell flat. Sorry, "This is Morgan Freeman, do you have any bones that need collecting?" just didn't do it for me eheheheh! This movie is good but it isn't a Little Miss Sunshine or Sideways.
