Regina Spektor - Samson |
] |
I discovered Regina Spektor through perchance's lj. I downloaded On the Radio, and it was immediately on my Winamp's autoplay. And then I listened to the entire Begin to Dream album, and it was just amazing. Rarely would you find an artist who plays the piano and writes her own songs, and Regina does so beautifully. Her lyrics are both poetic and poignant and sometimes vague. It isn't any wonder why she's being compared to Tori Amos, which kinds of irks her, I heard. She even looks like Tori (and Fiona Apple and Chloe Sevigny) sometimes. Well I say just be flattered, Regina. Fret all you want, but bear in mind that Tori paved the road for artists of your genre to penetrate the commercial music industry.
But really, Regina makes her own beautiful music. Although comparison is inevitable because she sounds like Bjork or Kate Bush when she coos. I love that her style is raw and most of her songs sound happy and her lyrics are free flowing but the storytelling is intact.
My favorite tracks are:
1. Fidelity 2. Better 3. Samson (nakakapangilabot!!!) 4. On the Radio (so bouncy) 5. Field Below 6. Hotel Song 9. That Time 11. Lady 12. Summer in the City
Tracks 7. Apres Moi, 8. 20 Years of Snow and 10. Edit all sound different at first and a few playbacks are needed to fully appreciate the melody, but these just show Regina's eccentricity as a songwriter.
Her lyrics are byutifuuuuul!!! Some of my favorite parts in her songs:
And suppose I never ever met you Suppose we never fell in love Suppose I never ever let you kiss me so sweet and so soft Suppose I never ever saw you Suppose we never ever called Suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my own fall Just to break my fall Just to break my fall Break my fall Break my fall Fidelity
Well this is how it works you peer inside yourself you take the things you like and try to love the things you took and then you take that love you make and stick it into some, someone else's heart pumping someone else's blood and walk in arm in arm you hope it don't get harmed but even if if does you'd just do it all again On the radio we heard November rain that solo's awful long but it's a good refrain you'll listened to it twice 'cause the DJ is asleep on the radio On the Radio
Come in, come in Come into my world I've got to show Show show you Come into my bed I've got to know Know know you I have dreams of orca whales and owls But I wake up in fear You will never be my You will never be my fool Will never be my fool Hotel Song
Lady sings the blues so well As if she mean it As if it's hell down here In the smoke-filled world Where the jokes are cold They don't laugh at jokes They laugh at tragedies Lady (This song could actually be a tribute to Billie Holiday.)
Summer in the city means cleavage cleavage cleavage And I start to miss you, baby, sometimes I've been staying up and drinking in a late night establishment Telling strangers personal things Summer in the City
Hey remember that time when I would only read Shakespeare Hey remember that other time when I would only read the backs of cereal boxes Hey remember that time I tried to save a pigeon with a broken wing A street cat got him by morning and I had to bury pieces of his body in my building's playground I thought I was going to be sick, I thought I was going to be sick That Time
Samson went back to bed Not much hair left on his head He ate a slice of wonder bread and went right back to bed And history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us And the bible didn't mention us, not even once Samson
I wish I'd see your face below I wish I'd hear you whispering low But you don't live downtown no more And everything must come and go Field Below

Try and enjoy Regina!! She's immediately become one of my favorite musicians.

The One Liner:
You know that place between sleep and awake, the place where you can still remember dreaming? That's where I'll always love you, Peter Pan. That's where I'll be waiting.
Tinkerbell, Hook
The Last Song Syndrome:
Where to go I had no idea about it Most of the people do, there're only doing just fine I don't wanna stay in place no more, see Ain't doing well well well, I am only doing just fine. Long Distance Call, Phoenix
The rain fell hard on the roofs that day You telephone from far away I see the ocean from my room All I could say was "are you coming home soon?" The static whisper in my ear But in a moment your voice was clear "I need some time," you said to me That's when I knew you were gonna make me lonely. On Peak Hill, Stars
