Chin Chin Gutierrez - Uyayi ni Nena (Tulog Na Mahal Ko) |
] |
Met up with the barkadings last night to watch Sarong Banggi. Had dinner in Hap Chang, Mega Strip. Jowin had to leave early so it was only moi, Gerald, Bien, Cassy, Ver, Marjo and his boyfriend, Ed, who watched the movie. I didn't even expect that we would all meet up. I was only expecting to meet Gerald and Jowin.
After the last show, Marjo and Ed left right away, Cassy had to go to an office party. So Bien ate dinner in Dencio's, Mega Strip while Ver, Gerald and I had dessert lang. Went home na rin after the dinner because I was so sleepy and my body still hurts because of La Luz.

One may fault Emmanuel dela Cruz's Sarong Banggi for its predictable and hackneyed denouement, but I simply don't mind because it's not the type of film that presents itself as something you have never seen before. You just have to watch it and feel the characters and realize the tragedy as it unfolds, which you might have guessed already anyway. And true that reality is stranger than fiction because you know that it can happen, and the film was able to deliver that. Trite as it was, it was believable nonetheless. Sure, you've seen it before in a dozen Pinoy movies, but I don't think it has ever been delivered as realistically as in Sarong Banggi.
Nanay Jaclyn Jose's portrayal of an aged prostitute with a sad past is THE performance of last year. Napakahusay. I haven't seen a performance by a local actress as electrifying and powerful since Vilma Santos in Bata, Bata Paano ka Ginawa?. Jaclyn is simply the life of the film. It's best moments are those scenes where she was talking to herself (or to the audience), weaving stories of the people passing by. Those scenes are both funny and melancholic, truly unforgettable. So Ate Clau Clau, kahit love kita, kung totoo man ang chika na nagpakabratinela ka sa pagkakatalo mo over Ms. Jose in Gawad Urian, maghunus dili ka dahil kinain ka ng buhay ni Nanay. Magpasalamat ka na lang at hindi nirelease commercially ang Sarong Banggi last year dahil kung hindi e I'm sure makakagrandslam ang Nanay Magda mo!
Angelo Ilagan's portrayal of Nyoy is heartfelt. He was effective in showing the naivety of his character and was able to hold his own against Ms. Jose. His (and Nathan Lopez's of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros) acting is fresh. Really, I'm just so sick and tired of the styles of acting by those winners of star search reality programs. It's as if may ready mask of emotions na sila for different scenes. I swear parepareho ang mga acting nila kapag malungkot, masaya or whatever. So fake! And how dare they call that method acting.
Watch Sarong Banggi if you can. Not because the story is new or the director's style of filming is revolutionary. But watch it to know that no matter how palasak a storyline may be, if the script is beautiful and the actors are brilliant, imposibleng hindi ka tatamaan. Until now I just can't get over how tragic it is.

Some Pinoy movies to watch out for...
Because I'm a Chonabelle and because Kailangan Ko'y Ikaw is one of the best Pinoy romantic comedies I've seen. Promise, mas naappreciate ko siya sa Notting Hill hahahhahaa!
The enhanced version. You simply have to watch it if you haven't yet. It's a beautiful film.
