Hotel Rwanda [24 Aug 2005|12:06am]
[ music | Morrissey - America is Not the World ]

It was 1994. I turned 12, and as far as I was concerned, there were 3 memorable events that happened that year. We, my mom and sisters, had a summer vacation in Saudi with my dad, Miss Universe was held in Manila for the second time, and haller, the MMFF fiasco. Little did I know that while the Miss Universe was going on, an estimated 1 million Rwandans were killed by their fellow Rwandans in just 3 months because of some deep seated conflicts between the two divisions of the Rwandan citizenry, the Tutsi and the Hutu.

It was hard to watch Hotel Rwanda because it was so heartbreaking. But what is even harder to swallow is that the genocide in Rwanda happened only ten years ago, when the information age was booming, and yet the world did not care. The powers to be did not care. United Nations was not able to do anything or they simply did not care, too. How can they not care?!?! Why were they so indifferent?! Simple. Rwanda categorically did not exist. It was as if it was not even in the map, and Rwandans were not even part of the statistics. They do not have oil reserves. They are poor. They are black. The Nick Nolte character said that they are not even niggers. They are just nothing. Their business was their business alone. That is the saddest of all.

Most importantly, Hotel Rwanda is a story of heroism, kindness and humanity amidst atrocity. Yes, people can be very mean and cruel and that is even an understatement, but people can also be good. Just months before she died and their hiding place was discovered by the Nazis, Anne Frank wrote in her diary that she still believed in the goodness of men, and it was the goodness in Paul Rusesabagin that saved thousand of lives during the Rwandan holocaust.

Don Cheadle played Rusesabagina, a Hutu and a manager of a classy and respected hotel in Rwanda. When all hell broke loose, the Belgian officials of the hotel were forced to move out of Rwanda, and full management was handed over to Rusesabagina. He saved thousands of Tutsis from the extremist Hutus by allowing them to take refuge in his hotel and literally buying the lives of some. It is tempting to compare him to Oskar Schindler, but he is his own person. Cheadle was amazing. His was the best performance by an actor that I have since Sean Penn in I Am Sam. This is probably Cheadle's first leading role, but he was also very good in his supporting roles in Traffic and Boogie Nights. He was so amazing that if I wish he had won the Oscar instead of Jamie Foxx even though I have yet to see him in Ray, and I do not know whether he was really great in it or it was just hype because he played a legendary American.

Sophie Okenedo played Tatiana Rusesabagina, Paul's wife and a Tutsi, and she was sensational. Where was she discovered?! She electrified every scene that she was in. I have not seen any of her other movies, but she was really very good here. And beautiful too, with or without make up. Joaquin Phoenix and Nick Nolte were also memorable.

Watch Hotel Rwanda. It was a crime that the world ignored Rwanda then. It is a crime to ignore this movie now.

Pinoy Big Brother; Last Sunday Night; Tuesday Afternoon [24 Aug 2005|02:39am]
[ music | Jorge Drexler - Todo Se Transforma ]

I've seen the first two episodes of Pinoy Big Brother, may konting dull moments but so far, so good. But what the fuck, ang pangit ng coverage ng Studio 23 ha. Fuck, Asia Agcaoli. Saan ba napulot ang babaeng 'yun?!?! And haller, ang chachaka ng girl housemates!!! Wala pang mga personality, mukhang mga GRO lahat, well except for that Raquel character, e nakakairita naman siya!

Anyway, I'm watching it because I have a crush on Uma and Rico ahahhaha!!! Rico is so freaking hot!!!! Aggggghhh!!! Yummyness the bulge and the body!!! Tangina, I wish matanggal agad si Chyx dahil ampanget niya at nang maudlot ang loveteam nila ni Rico GAAAAHHHHH!!! Just a while ago, he was shown getting out of the pool na super see through ang kanyang wet shorts at kita ang kanyang black briefs. Syet, sana wala na lang briefs ahahhaha!!! Uma naman is sooo charming!! Ang cute cute ng accent niya, argghh!!! I wanna play with him like a toy ahahhaa!! And haller, I am so not missing the episode tomorrow dahil may mga kuha siyang nakaboxer briefs lang, syet, Felix Bakat ever argh ahahhaha!!! By the way, may itsura rin si JB ahahhaa!!! Ohmygad, akin na lang siya, Big Brother!!

Went out with my best girl, Berns, last Sunday. We grabbed a quick McDo to go and caught the last show of Bewitched. Unspeakably hideous. Sure, there were a few funny scenes, but the movie as a whole was sooooooo boring, I swear, I can feel my eyes getting heavy. Why did Nicole Kidman ever accept that project. Sure, it's pretty exciting seeing her play the Elizabeth Montgomery classic witch character, but my gawd, the script is horrible!!!! And the chemistry between Nicole and Will Ferrell? What chemistry?!?! There was no chemistry!!! They were so flat. I wouldn't be surprised if this gets nominated in the Razzies next year. But I love Nicole in this movie. She's so cute, and her outfits were so cute!!! I love the shoes, I love the cardigans or whatever you call that thing she was always wearing, I love the jeans, I love the capris, I love the colors she was wearing, I love it when she wiggles her nose a la Samantha, loves her, loves her, loves her! But stick to drama, Nic. You're not very effective in comedy.

After almost falling asleep, Berns and I rushed to, where else, Music 21, Makati ahahaa!!! We sang our hearts out from 1AM to 5AM ahahha!! At parang kulang pa. By quarter to 5Am we were already singing Aegis songs ahahha! Will post our pics as soon as Berns has sent them to me. We have really cute ones hehehe!

The other day ko lang napanood ang Original Sin. Gad, I'm so lagged. I was shocked!!! Grabe pala sa perversion ang pelikulang ito! Duraan kung duraan, kantutan kung kantutan!!! Ahahahhaa!!! As in that's the word!!! Antonio Banderas was sizzling, and Angelina Jolie was UBER sensual. They were really burning onscreen. And because of the perversion, I loves it. ~lol~

Was in Elsie's house a while ago with my latest DVD acquisitions: Donnie Darko, Monster's Ball (which I've seen in the moviehouse), Amores Perros (which I have in VCD, but I want it in DVD), and Hotel Rwanda, but we ended up watching Chicago which she borrowed last month but never got the chance to watch ehehe.
