'Yan ang Pinoy! [03 Jul 2005|02:40am]
[ music | Bamboo - Noypi ]

Kudos to Imbestigador for their amazing episode a while ago about the Filipino's honesty in lieu with the recent GMA announcement that she did call Garciliano during the last presidential elections, and a possible admittance that she indeed cheated. They had a finders keepers kind of experiment wherein this girl, their "accomplice", would walk down a street tapos she would "accidentally" drop her wallet tapos they'd observe kung may pupulot para isoli or itago. They had a hidden camera. Inside the wallet, may 200p, a letter from the mother of the girl kunwari na kesyo pagkasyahin na lang muna 'yung money for the rest of the week, and ID nung girl with her cellphone number. They did it along Makati Ave., in Quiapo, outside schools, market places etc. Of course some kept the money and threw the wallet away, may isa pa nga pinambili niya ng bigas, 'yung isa namang magbabarkada pinaghati-hatian nila 'yung money. What's interesting is that out of the 80 times that they did it, only 15 of those kept the money; 65 returned it. Amazing because some really went out of the way to return the wallet. As in tinext pa nila 'yung girl para makipag-meet up to return it. Nakakataba ng puso, madami pa rin pala sa mga Pinoy ang honest. One case was rather unusual. There was a guy na naka-bike, he saw the wallet, he picked it up, looked inside, he saw na may money, then he gave the wallet to a kid who was passing by. The kid saw the money, he kept the 100p, he gave the other 100p bill to the guy. Pinaghatian nila. Kakaiba di'ba?!

Tapos they featured this town in Batanes na may isang sari-sari store cum carinderia. The owner of the store, an old woman, doesn't guard the store anymore. Wala na daw siyang time because of her household chores. You just drop your money in a box to pay. Surprisingly, everybody pays at walang nandadaya. Kung may sukli, you just log it in a notebook, and you can pick it up the next day. Amazing. Kung dito sa Manila 'yan, hay ubos ang lahat ng paninda mo, wala ka pang kita.

Also, kudos to Robert Tarongoy, the OFW who was made hostage in Iraq and was just recently released. During his press conference immediately after he got back here, he said something like, "Masaya pa rin ako at ako'y naging Pilipino." For someone who was held hostage and tortured in a foreign country, and his reason for being there was because there wasn't any available job for him in his own country, that was really something. Nakakataba ng puso. Mabuhay ka, kabayan!

And kudos to ABC 5 for the live Live8 concert telecast, a sequel to 1985's Live Aid concert. I'm watching it now, and Keane is currently performing in London. I'm really amazed. After 20 years, music once again proves that it can indeed make the people come together. So if you're reading this, I urge you to sign up in the Live 8 site and be part of the statistics which aim to totally eradicate global debt.

Live8: It's cool to care! [03 Jul 2005|05:45pm]
[ music | Madonna - Music ]

I started watching around 2am through ABC 5's delayed "live" telecast, past 8am na ako natapos. Live8 was just... marvelous.

The concert in Philadelphia was a bit mediocre with artists like Bon Jovi, P Diddy, Black Eyed Peas, Destiny's Child, Jay Z, Linkin Park, and Will Smith performing, and I only saw Peter Gabriel, Dave Matthews Band, Destiny's Child, Will Smith, Kanye West and Maroon 5 performed. Sayang I didn't see Alicia Keys, Josh Groban, Rob Thomas, Sarah McLachlan, and Stevie Wonder.

The concert in London was where the spirit and activism are at with artists like The African Children's Choir, Annie Lennox, Bob Geldof, Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney, REM, Pink Floyd, Sting, and U2 (hello, BONO!!) performing. Travis and Scissor Sistersalso performed. Paksyet because I didn't see U2, REM, Coldplay, and Dido!!! Agggh!!! I saw Annie Lennox, Joss Stone, Keane, Mariah Carey, Ms. Dynamite The Killers, Sting, UB40, Robbie Williams (who never fails to irritate me), and Madonna. Madonna was amazing. She sang Like a Prayer with a gospel Choir, Ray of Light, and Music, but Sting took my heart away. He sang Message in a Bottle and ended with Every Breath You take. He changed the lyrics so that the line we'll be watching you pertained to the G8 leaders. He was singing it with a video of the 8 leaders walking on his background monitor screen. Nakakapangilabot.

I also saw Shakira in Paris and A-ha (ang gwapo pa rin ng lead singer!!) in Berlin. Madaming pang mga artists who participated. Sayang because I wasn't able to catch Bjork in Tokyo and Audioslave in Berlin.

So what is Live 8 all about?! I am so surprised and disappointed that not a lot of people I've talked to know. Are we all so consumed with far less important concerns of our country like that "Gloriagate" shit?

It's time to act now. Live 8 doesn't want your money, it wants YOU to be heard! Sign up in the Live 8 list here. This list will be given to the 8 leaders of the 8 richest nations on July 6 in Scotland, where they will have their G8 summit. These leaders can change history and put an end to poverty, and we can help.

By signing up, we demand to:

1. Double the aid sent to the world's poorest countries,
2. fully cancel their debts,
3. and change the trade laws so that they can build their own future.

Your name is important. There is no excuse for apathy.
