End of Semester Blues [10 Apr 2003|02:41pm]
[ mood | cranky ]

I am now officially the proud owner of a Jetta. Yea!

We picked it up last night and went to Bone Daddy's with Mike and Thorne. Um, I'm not really sure why Mike likes that place so much. The girls are OK looking (not hot, in my humble opinion) and the food was just so-so. But there's no accounting for the tastes of horny single 20-something guys.

So we were pretty tired when we got home, and apparently, Rob didn't set his alarm clock right or something, because we got a call at 7:30 this morning that Rob had missed the 6:30 formation. Oops!

Rob's supposed to bring someone to look at the Probe today during lunch. I hope we can sell that bad boy pretty quickly...I'm ready to be rid of it. Our driveway isn't big enough for 3 cars, and the Probe has to be parked across the street, in front of the dirty trashy neighbors that I hate.

Lots and lots of schoolwork to do today...I hate the end of the semester. I *think* I only have 1 exam, though, and hopefully no major final projects, so hopefully the end of the semester will be easy. I could really use that, with the whole trying-to-move-during-exams thing.

I've gotta get cracking on this homework...ugh, I hate Advanced Reference.

And Even More Car News [09 Apr 2003|02:40pm]
Just got a call from Rob...we got approved for a 4.95% interest rate. Woo hoo!

And, they're going to put in a 6 cd changer for me, so that I can keep the tape deck (I'm looking ahead to when we have kids...I'm not buying kids music when I know my Mom has boxes upon boxes of tapes).

We also signed up for an extended warranty, because with the computer chip and the turbo engine, if something goes wrong, it will cost more than the price of the warranty to fix it.

So all that, plus TT&L, puts the total cost at around $18,000. Whew. Although, I owe more for school loans, so $18,000 doesn't seem like that much to me (scary thought, huh?). So our payments will be about $354.98/month.

I told Rob the only reason we can afford this car is because he's going to be gone. Take the amount we were paying for his car and add the money we'll get for separation pay, and voila! The Jetta payment.

They're detailing it and fixing the little nicks and putting in my CD player, so we've gotta go pick it up tonight.

I'm so tired of driving to Austin.

I'm sure you are getting tired of reading about the car...I'm sure once I have it in my possession, I'll shut up about it and go back to my oh-so-interesting typical ramblings on how much I hate school and the military.

I've gotta get to the doctor.

Dude, You're Getting a Jetta! [08 Apr 2003|02:39pm]
[ mood | crazy ]

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, the car is as good as mine.

We spent a few hours at the dealer looking at the Wolfsburg edition, and they knocked $900 off the asking price without even blinking. Which is great, because the blue book for that car is $18,500 and we're going to pay $16,000.

Since we didn't get the final word on financing yesterday, they let us take the car home with us, so Rob's driving it around post now. We've got to go back down to Austin again tonight to do the final work. The Bank has pretty much already told us we've been approved for a 5.25% interest rate, about the lowest out there now, so looks like this is gonna happen.

The only thing I need now is a CD player, since the car apparently had a changer that the owner took out. But the salesguy we were working with used to own a tint/audio shop, and says he might be able to get us a good deal on a changer because he knows a guy. :-)

And we've already found a potential buyer for the probe...so things are working out so far. Let's hope they stay that way.

The one glitch of the past few days...registration woes at Southern. Big surprise. I had registered for 3 hours (1 measly class) and they tried to charge me for full-time tuition. Hmmm, $7,000 for one class? I don't think so. So I called the registrar and actually got through to someone, who *said* they changed my status. So we'll see how long it takes for that to show up online so I can pay my registration fee to hold my spot in the class.

Well, I've got some work to do and I have to clean out my car for the guy to come look at it.

More Car News [07 Apr 2003|01:18pm]
[ mood | excited ]

We're heading down to Austin tonight to check out 2 cars. :-)

The first is the nice Wolfsburg edition turbo I discussed previously. The second is a year older and has 20,000 more miles, and is only about $1,500 cheaper. It still has everything I want, turbo engine, sunroof, power everything, and is a very pretty shade of marroon. But when the guy found out that Rob is military, he told us he'd give us a fantastic deal. It's about time being military was worth something. (oops, that was negative and came out much bitchier than I meant it. Moving on...)

So Rob's getting off work early tonight (hey, they had unit graduation Friday...they're pretty much done. Well, Rob's working on the phase birds and needs to finish that, but he can leave early once. He's always there until 7 or 8 pm, so getting off early won't destroy the shop). We've got an appointment at 6-6:30 for the marroon one, and Rob's still waiting for a call back from the dealer who has the blue one.

Oh, and this is interesting. Rob called to get a quote on insurance for the jetta...you know, it wouldn't do to buy a new car and not be able to drive it because you can't afford insurance. So...it turns out it's cheaper to keep Rob's car insured and just drop it to liability (woo hoo for not having to have full coverage once it's paid off!) as well as the Jetta, then to just insure the Jetta. Can anyone tell me why that is?

The mailman has stopped delivering our mail, even though the form I filled out stated that they should forward our mail starting April 28th. So...we have to call and have them deliver our mail. Just what I need, to have sold the Probe and not be able to get the title from my Mom because the morons won't give me my mail. *sigh* Moving's such fun, ain't it?

I'm off to read a chapter on control and evaluation in the library (?), work on my group project (hmm, haven't heard from my group members in a week), then shower and get ready to spend another evening in Austin car shopping.

Keep your fingers crossed that I get a good deal!

New Car...Maybe [06 Apr 2003|09:15pm]
[ mood | curious ]

Yesterday Rob and I went to the VW dealership here and priced my dream car--a new Jetta with a 1.9 liter Turbo engine, power everything, sunroof...$21,300. Ouch.

So...today we drove around Austin checking out cars we found last night on AutoTrader.com. And we found a great deal. A 2000 Jetta, blue, Wolfsburg Edition (16" alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and shifter, sport front bucket seats, side badges, and sport suspension), with 16,000 miles for $16,900. And still under warranty. :-) So Rob's going to call tomorrow about it and we'll try to go down to Austin again tomorrow and talk to the dealer.

We've checked at home for jettas, and can't find anything nearly this good. So...if we end up getting this, we'll try to sell my car here, and tow the new Jetta home. If not...I'll have to follow Rob home, which should be interesting to say the least.

Wish me luck!

Countdowns [02 Apr 2003|12:05pm]
[ mood | pessimistic ]

Rob is not happy.

They were supposed to be off work by 5 yesterday, a change from the norm. He got home at 9.

This unit hasn't been doing PT, and was in the field last week, so they decided yesterday to have a PT test today. Smart. Hopefully most people didn't fail it.

So he's annoyed, and that's understandable. I'm counting down the days until we're free. 2 years 5 months, hopefully stop loss will be revoked by then.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was writing an email to a girl I met on Solo Ops, and it was long and insightful and ranting and wonderful. My browser froze and I lost it. Grrrr.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Got an email from my sister today...our friend Jennifer from back home had her baby yesterday...what a nice April Fool's surprise!

So join me in welcoming Zackary Fordys Arnold into the world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Arg, I must get back to work now. So much schoolwork, and all I want to do is go play outside. Staying in on the computer is torture. *sigh* 2 more classes and I'm done. It can't come soon enough.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Seems like I'm always counting down to something...graduation, ETSing out of the Army, getting a job, moving, having kids...the result of being a planner, I guess. Though I don't seem to be able to plan very successfully lately.

I want to plan my life. I need to plan my life. Not being able to makes me crazy. I like having countdowns, making goals and reaching them.

Guess I should go now, gotta finish some homework.

More later, if I feel like it.

Lazy Weekend [31 Mar 2003|11:36am]
[ mood | bored ]
[ music | none, my speakers aren't working >:-( ]

Had a lazy, lazy weekend.

We were going to do some work outside on Saturday, but it was so freaking cold here! So we cleaned up (a little), then went shopping. We went to Goody's, where they were having a 50% off sale, and got Rob 2 pairs of shorts and a pair of jeans. Then we went to Target to get some stuff, nothing interesting, then headed to China Buffet for dinner. And let me tell you, I ate myself silly. We came home and watched "One Hour Photo," which was awesome beyond words.

Sunday was finally warm. :-) Rob mowed the lawn and replaced his shocks, while I started on the laundry. Always a fun task. We watched "The Ring," which was very good. We went to the Addison's, and I got some Mary Kay stuff from Crystal (half price, baby!). I got a lip enhancer, lipstick, and eye makeup remover. So that was good.

We went to Wal-Mart for some food, because Rob decided he wanted steak for dinner. So he had steak, and I wanted some of that white sausage, I can't remember what it's called. Of course, they didn't have any, so we got Cheddar sausage to try (and it was icky).

So, we had dinner, then I had to get online for a chat for school (yuck). I hate group projects online. It's so confusing. So, we're coming up with a list of resources for parents of children with learning disabilities. I'm looking for non-print resources. Anyone know of anything good?

Of course, the topic veered off, and we started talking about our Reference prof. (unclear, offers conflicting info, and is hard to get hold of) and the department head (unclear, bitchy). Well, at least we get a new department head next fall.

Still confusion about the way "hybrid" classes will work starting this summer. The dept. head doesn't seem to be able to offer a clear explanation.

Anyone looking to get an MLS...do NOT take classes from Southern Connecticut State University, especially not online. It's more trouble than it's worth.

Enough bitching, I have to get back to homework. When will it ever end?

We're Ass Fucked [25 Mar 2003|12:26pm]
The army has bent us over and ass fucked us again.

Big surprise there.

Going to Korea, they practically guarantee you your choice of where you go after that. Our choices were:
1. Ft. Bragg, NC
2. Ft. Stewart, GA
3. Ft. Hood, TX

In January Rob was told he had 2 preference forms submitted and was slated for Ft. Campbell, KY (our last choice) and thought he had gotten it taken care of.

Today the final assignments came out and we're going to Ft. Campbell.

This seriously put a crimp in my plan. Go to Bragg and live and work for a year while Rob is in Korea, come back and live there our last year and a half, then stay in central NC because I have a job there and Rob can get one easily.

I've looked for library jobs around Ft. Campbell. There's nothing. I know I'm going to have to work at Wal-Mart or something just to pay off my loans, and this pisses me off to no end.

Rob went off, telling the guy that if he had gotten one of his first 2 choices there was a good chance he'd reenlist (not really, but we'd think about it and decide against it). He told the guy he'd leave and never wanted anything to do with the Army again, since they've done nothing but ass fuck us since day one.

What's worse is that most of the people in Rob's shop got stuck with assignments that weren't in their top 3. But they're too chickenshit to say anything, and since Rob's the only one complaining, nothing will get fixed.

New plan: Melissa applies for work anywhere she can get it, aiming for South Carolina. I have friends in Columbia, and there's a shortage of librarians there and they should be willing to hire green Melissa straight out of school (actually, still in school, with 1 class to go).

If I have a good job, Rob wants to be a geographic bachelor his last 13 months because he knows what the library job market is in the Campbell area.

Can I really live for 2 and a half years without him? Do I even want to? Is money that important?

I don't know what to do.

Stupid Reading Assignments [12 Feb 2003|02:19pm]
[ mood | annoyed ]
[ music | nothing, I'm trying to study here! ]

I just spent an hour reading a bunch of techno-babble about the Internet that I'm sure will not help me provide reference service. *sigh* I hate dumb reading assignments.

On a better note...I read a great book. "Boston Jane" by Jennifer L. Holm. It's about a girl who wants to be a "lady" so she goes to finishing school. Her fiance sends for her to come to Oregon, and after a horrible journey, she makes it only to find he has left and she has to learn to live on the frontier with "savages" and rough men. A good YA read...I recommend it. :-)

And this girl in my Advanced Reference class is getting on my nerves. We're supposed to make "webpages" and post all our assignments. not hard. OK, easy way...put everything in a Word document and save as "index.html" as a web document. Then upload it. This chick, I don't know what she's doing. I was trying to be nice and help her. I've asked her 2 times to send me her index page so I can look at it and see if it's something she's done on there. She keeps emailing me 1 line emails about all she's been able to do is change her name from Jane Doe. WTF? I've delayed e-mailing her back because I'm afraid I can't not treat her like a royal dumass now. Ugh, if I could figure it out, anyone can! Throw me a freaking bone! Show me what you have or I CAN'T HELP YOU!!! /rant

I think some birds have built a nest in my chimney. I lept hearing tweeting, and thought it was outside, but no...you can hear it clearly if you stick your head in the fireplace.

Ugh...must work on an annotated Summer Reading List for 11th grade and come up with 15 ways libraries can improve customer service.

I've been in school for about 23 years straight now...I need a break!!!

Well, I've got a shitload of schoolwork to do this week...9 chapters to read, 9 YA books. The YA books are done, and I'm halfway through with the chapters. Then come all the fun discussions (not) and all sorts of stupid little projects that will in no way enhance my professional life.

So...I'm going to fill my belly with coffee and anything else with caffiene that I have in my house and try to stay awake long enough today to get some work done.

So...I'm off to delve into the fascinating worlds of e-mail reference services and management styles. *retch*

[ mood | thoughtful ]

God, I love this show! I've watched all the seasons...the celebrity one is the funniest (probably thanks to Kathy Griffin, who I love), but the others have been more exciting.

Now this is a show I would actually consider trying out for.

I'd never win...I've been wrong EVERY single time. In fact...tonight the person I thought was the mole was eliminated. So...I'm back to square one.

So...if I was on the show...

It's one of my goals in life to read all 100 of these books. And you should too!

It's cold.

It's rainy.

I hate cold rainy days.

I've spent the day so far perusing the newspaper and watching the chick flick movie marathon on TBS.

That is...until a very big scary bug ruined my plans.

He's hiding somewhere downstairs among the rubble Rob left in between the gunnery and the hellfire.

So...being the sissy that I am...I'm afraid to go downstairs for fear that he'll crawl on me.

Why is my cat never around when I need her to kill a bug for me?

Or my husband, for that matter...

It's late.

I'm up.

I created some communities...military wives, childless and happy, and librarians...so check them out and join if they apply to you!

It rained today and was cold...yuck. I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow. Not like it matters, since I'm not going anywhere. I'll be on the couch watching the chick flick marathon on TBS. Such an exciting life I lead.

Well, that's what happens when my husband's away...I do nothing.

Hmmm...maybe I'll go play some games on Yahoo, since I'm not tired.

Punk lured you in quickly with it's sense of political outrage. You're very involved in politics and most definitely have a Che poster on your wall. Although some people would call you a radical, others admire your determination, intelligence, and social awareness.
