Value Doing

“Life begins when you get out of the grandstand into the game.” -- P. L. Debevoise

We can read about swimming and watch swimmers all day long, but we don’t learn to swim until we get into the water and give it a try.

I spend a lot of time planning what I want to do – and that is important. But my biggest insights and results come when I immerse myself into my writing or project – when I actually do it.

It’s only when I’m truly doing something—writing an article or actually creating something—that I really connect with the energy of it. When I’m fully engaged in my activity, the energy builds. Inspiration and ideas and connections flow.

But when I’m just thinking about something, I’m an outsider looking in. I’m separated from the full experience. My mind is a mere spectator judging what might happen. Because I’m immobile and physically uninvolved, ideas and words do not flow easily.

So here’s the bottom line: Instead of thinking and worrying about it, just do it! This is especially true for shorter tasks.

“If you keep thinking about what you want to do or what you hope will happen, you don’t do it, and it won’t happen.” -- Joe DiMaggio

“We don’t know who we are until we see what we can do.” -- Martha Grimes

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS ALL THE TIME

The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong,
for time and chance happen to everyone.
Take a second look at what appears to be someone's "good luck."
You'll find not luck but preparation,
planning and success-producing thinking.

Opportunity is around you all the time,
but you have to be ready for it.
When your chance comes,
you must have the equipment to take advantage of it.

When you're prepared for opportunity,
your chance for success is sure to come.
The season of failure is the best time for sowing the seeds of success.
The tide of opportunity comes to everyone.

Pondering Life Purpose?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.” -- Ken Hudgins

Do we each have one unique role to play to ultimately fulfill our lives? When people talk about life purpose, it often seems to be presented this way.

I struggled for many years to identify my life purpose. Thanks to Eckhart Tolle, my struggle has now ended. For he proposes that everyone shares a common life purpose: to raise consciousness. This rings so true to me!

Doesn’t it make sense that our purpose is to grow as human beings, to expand our understanding of ourselves and of life?

If life purpose involves how I grow to be more authentic, it embraces every aspect of my life. It’s not just about work, about what I do. It’s just as much about how I am as a human being.

Furthermore, this means that my life purpose evolves as I do. I’m being called to open to new possibilities every moment of every day. How could I even dream of limiting my focus to just one script?

So rather than struggle to define one unique Life Purpose, I now stop and reflect on where I find purpose (small ‘p’) in life right now. What brings me joy and meaning? What inspires me? What do I want to heal? When I follow these signposts, my purpose looks after itself.

“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget that the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.” -- Joseph Campbell

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -- Harold Thurman Whitman

Do you give to get?

"I have sensed a growing discontent amongst many who are on their spiritual path. A common theme appears to be -- 'I have been serving God for so long and have given up so much and it has been such a struggle -- when am I going to get my reward?'"

-- Wendy Munroe

It's interesting to become aware of how we participate in the dynamic exchange of giving and receiving. When we give, do we do so whole-heartedly? Or do we do so with the ulterior motive of wanting something in return?

It's not wise to be always looking for a deal. The universe never short-changes us. We can afford to be generous. The Koran spells out a value-for-value principle. When something of value is given, something of value must be returned.

"It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving."

Forgiveness brings joy

"The greatest evil that can befall man is that he should come to think ill of himself."

-- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

Do you feel worthy of having joy? Do you feel you deserve it?

The first step to activating our inner joy is to eliminate the blocks to it. We can start by truly forgiving ourselves and all others. Forgiveness calls for a shift in our perception. It is easier to forgive ourselves and others when we really understand that each of us has always done the very best we knew to do at that time.

"If we don't forgive ourselves for our mistakes, and others for the wounds they have inflicted upon us, we end up crippled with guilt. And the soul cannot grow under a blanket of guilt, because guilt is isolating, while growth is a gradual process of reconnection to ourselves, to other people, and to a larger whole."

-- Joan Borysenko
