7:38p - SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS BEING EVICTED RIGHT NOW!!
SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS BEING EVICTED RIGHT NOW!!
Sorry for the unexpected email, but we've got an emergency.
Even though the South Central Farmers seemed to be making good progress to raise money to buy their land, this morning at 5:20am, the Los Angeles Sheriffs arrived for the long-dreaded eviction. They are removing all the farmers and supporters from the land and are preparing to destroy the farm and hand it over to the land developers.
Stories from the scene are hectic. Bulldozers poised outside the gates. A dozen people dragged out. Two people sent away in ambulances (!!!). Sheriffs have cordoned off the area, but that hasn't stopped activists from gathering on the outside to protest and show support.
If you can, please do some of the following to help out:
- rush out to the farm. Maybe big numbers will change their minds, maybe it will just stop the sheriffs from abusing the farmers as they drag them away from their home. The farm is located at 41st and Long Beach Ave in Los Angeles. If you can't make it there, we recommend meeting up instead at Martin Luther King Blvd and Alameda, or protesting outside City Hall (200 N. Spring Street).
- tell everyone you know! Send to all your email lists, call your friends, post on your blog or myspace page, whatever. If you've got any friends in the news media, tell them.
- Call the mayor's office (213-978-0600), or call Councilwoman Jan Perry (213-473-7009) to demand that they step in.

Thanks much,
