RIP Netta passed away on Christmas Eve. Apparently, she had a large tumour removed from her stomach and intestine in June and never really recovered. I did not even know she'd been so sick.
I knew Netta from our years studying Chinese at university. We lived in the same dormitory for a year in China. I can remember us riding our bicycles down a busy lane, crowded with tailors' shops, in Hangzhou. I helped her when she had to go to hospital and needed an interpreter. When we came home after our year in China, we just lost contact with each other. We had never been close anyway, and besides, in my youthful arrogance i dismissed her as being "old" and "boring". Now of course i realise that she was just older than i am and had a lot to share, but i couldn't really have heard it then.
Who could have known that just a scant 10 years later, she would be dead? Who knows, in 10 years, i could also be dead. A timely reminder to myself - live, and enjoy life, love and tell those you love, that you love them.
Rest in peace, Netta.
