This is a bricklayer's accident report, which was printed in the newsletter of the Australian equivalent of the Workers' Compensation board. This is a true story. Had this guy died, he'd have received a Darwin Award for sure....... Dear Sir, I am writing in response to your request for additional information in Block 3 of the accident report form. I put "poor planning" as the cause of my accident. You asked for a fuller explanation and I trust the following details will be sufficient. I am a bricklayer by trade. On the day of the accident, I was working alone on the roof of a new six-story building. When I completed my work,I found that I had some bricks left over which, when weighed later were found to be slightly in excess of 500lbs. Rather than carry the bricks down by hand I decided to lower them in a barrel by using a pulley, which was attached to the side of the building on the sixth floor. Securing the rope at ground I went up to the roof, swung the barrel out and loaded the bricks into it. Then I went down and untied the rope, holding it tightly to ensure a slow descent of the bricks. You will note in Block 11 of the accident report form that I weigh135lbs. Due to my surprise at being jerked off the ground so suddenly, I lost my presence of mind and forgot to let go of the rope. Needless to say, I proceeded at a rapid rate up the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel, which was now proceeding downward at an equally impressive speed. This explained the fractured skull, minor abrasions and the broken collar bone, as listed in section 3 of the accident report form. Slowed only slightly, I continued my rapid ascent, not stopping until the fingers of my right hand were two knuckles deep into the pulley. Fortunately by this time I had regained my presence of mind and was able to hold tightly to the rope, in spite of beginning to experience pain. At approximately the same time, however, the barrel of bricks hit the ground and the bottom fell out of the barrel. Now devoid of the weight of the bricks, that barrel weighed approximately 50 lbs. I refer you again to my weight. As you can imagine, I began a rapid descent, down the side of the building. In the vicinity of the third floor, I met the barrel coming up. This accounts for the two fractured ankles, broken tooth and several lacerations of my legs and lower body. Here my luck began to change slightly. The encounter with the barrel seemed to slow me enough to lessen my injuries when I fell into the pile of bricks and fortunately only three vertebrae were cracked. I am sorry to report, however, as I lay there on the pile of bricks, in pain, unable to move, I again lost my composure and presence of mind and let go of the rope and I lay there watching the empty barrel begin its journey back down onto me. Found out yesterday that my dad's girlfriend is pregnant.. He let it slip into the conversation (phone) so casually I wasn't sure I heard him right.. I feel even more frozen, like he doesn't need my brother and I now that he's started a new family. I felt like the odd one out with his side of the family already. I don't look like them, act like them.. I take after my mother, and they always hated her. They've really changed their bloody perspectives. They used to not set foot inside someone's house if the couple were living together and weren't married, and now they've accepted my father's young, drug and alcohol addicted whore of a girlfriend and they're all excited about having another baby in the family. My parent's aren't even divorced! And I'm expected to fly down and visit them in the holidays and act like I'm pleased about it! Well fuck that. Listened to Trance and House music today, discovered that me likey. Got 100% on my German test the other day. Highest score in the class. I must have been having a really bad day on the Goethe Society exam day then.. I didn't get anything and last year I got Diploma something rather :(.. Even the dumbasses achieved this year. I guess one external exam doesn't matter though, I'm not taking German at school next year; I'm attending a German night classes for adults. Fun, fun. I love german, and my mum wants me to go for a one year exchange to Germany to study Scientific Engineering when I go to University. I'm pretty sure that's what I want to do now. Apparently 20% of kids know what they want to do from when they're about 12, and they follow through with it. That's me so far. I also like Architecture and Linguistics.. Finished the book Ophelia's Revenge today. I really have no life; I read it in two days and it's longer than the Fellowship of the Ring. It made me feel kinda sick. Depression inducing or something. Ooh, Evanescence is having a concert in Auckland in January. I was at my Grandmother's house, and at first my mum said that me going was absolutely out of the question because they were like evil freaky drug-addict-attracting goths, but a few minutes later my nana asked me why i looked sad and my mum said that me going to the concert was under negotiation. Geez, she changes her mind quick. I'm such a good boring daughter.. okay maybe I'm a bit of a sulky bitch.. how could she refuse me? She doesn't know how good she has it. Most people my age are off their faces every night and not back until 3 in the morning. She does know the tricks though, that's the good thing about having a young mother (sometimes good *frowns*), she lets me drink alchohol because she knows that if she deprives me from it I'll only rebel. I don't drink much though. Don't really like the stuff.. Did you know that an elf, a fairy and a pixie is technically the same thing? I've turned into a hallucinating pixie. I thought I saw a gnome man in the garden today. He looked like a synchronised swimmer. There is freedom in madness.. post comment

Next term we have exams. Lots of exams. How fun. I think I'm going to fail maths, which is bad, bad shtuff, because I need maths with calc to do engineering at uni. Then there's this whole HTML thing. I'm confusing myself more and more. It really is evil. Futile attempts to change my mind have not worked. But I'm determined anyway. I will prevail *insane cackle* The reason it's so important that I master the basics is because of my mother's university course. She's doing a paper on E-marketing and she has to make a basic website, which she unfortunately cannot do for herself. It has to look good aswell. So geocities just isn't going to do the trick. These holidays have been a waste. Last week I saw Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean (and now I'm obsessed with pirates.. let's all climb on the bandwagon of popularity, shall we..). I'm also getting more and more interested in joining the SCA (Society for Creative Anachorism). I've known about it for a while, but now I my interest is peaked. (Probably Angelus' Raven CR topic.. Speaking of him, I just can't get used to the name...) I also keep forgetting about HOL homework. Oh well. At least it isn't real (Okay, so it is, but it won't affect my future job prospects if I don't submit it). Dammit. I keep forgetting to visit HPU, and all that stuff. Stake me..
