6:35 am - women as mothers
I have read the questions on the we have brains website many times, but i fail to respond. With this one, however, I immediately opened up Wordpad to excavate my ideas. Motherhood (and this is not coming from a first hand experience) can mean a life beginning. A woman can start a new life and be reborn as a mother. If she doesn't want to be reborn herself, that's ok too. The bottom line, is that a woman's individuality is not entirely lost when she becomes a mother. Society may see her as JUST a mother, but she does not have to commit merely to society's standards. Maybe she can find a community of feminist mothers who understand her issues. Maybe she can be an individual and create her own manifestA as a mother.

Personally, (and everything is personal to me) I have never wanted to have children. I have not seen one healthy family end up healthy in my life. Until I see that family, maybe I will consider having a child myself. If I do end up having a child or children, I would still be the same person. My role(s) would change but that doesn't mean that I as an individual am a different person. Society may call me merely a mother, but I would know in my heart that I am so much more than that.

Some say that not wanting a child is sad. People have actually TOLD me to my face those exact words. I think that it is sad to go through life having a child just because society tells you to.

I think I went off topic a little there.

11:45 am - margaret cho is my hero
I found a link to Margaret Cho's blog from another feminist blog and have begun to read it religiously.

Since I probably can't quote the whole entry, I'll just quote part of it that I feel very strongly about and agree with.

"Young people have strong emotions, intense hormones that will not be silenced as easily as saying A-B-S-T-I-N-E-N-C-E. What they need is education, options, condoms, counseling, help, confidence, gentle awareness, trust in teachers, confidentiality, equality, reality, the fucking truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help us all God - not GUILT."

go here to read her witty comments about everything. seriously! go now!

1:31 am - fairytales
this is in response to we have brains

read http://news.uns.purdue.edu/hp/Grauerholz.tales.html first.

i think that traditional fairy tales can be harmful when read to children at the elementry school age, but they are just as harmful as everything else that is unprogressive with gender roles. most fairytales such as cinderella, sleeping beauty, and the little mermaid, tell the old story of a an ugly, weird, lowly creature who is eventually transformed into a beautiful woman, and/or redeemed by a prince. this tells girls that we are ugly until proven not, that we can be happy only if we are beautiful outside, and that we have to have a significant other (charming prince) to make us whole. most of the time, it's up to the prince to take action to "get" the princess (like in sleeping beauty).

reading feminist fairytales to your children would be beneficial, and i know these are hard to find but they are around. reading stories such as cinderalla (my favorite) are not extermely detrimental, but can be harmful if other gender roles are not taught and emphasized.

12:57 am - struggle
because i'm that oh so cool and smooth roommate, i went to take the phone cord out of the phone (to put it into the cpu) and ended up pushing the button that helps you find the cordless phone for you. yay for me because i put the phone in the bedroom so i woke up sarah as it beeped loudly in our room, and then anny woke up because she is such a light sleeper.

i recently bought bjork's vespertine at turn it up and cannot stop playing it. sometimes i'll be in class just huming this one song called undo.

It's not meant to be a strife
It's not meant to be a struggle uphill

It's not meant to be a strife
It's not meant to be a struggle uphill

Undo
Undo
If you're bleeding
Undo
And if you're sweating
Undo
If you're crying, darling

the name of this journal (avalanchhe) came from an ani song called tamburitza lingua. you can find the lyrics here and make what you will of why i picked this word, and why from this song. it's pretty self explanatory.

2:23 pm - not your usual journal
this is not your usual journal. i've had the usual online journal for so many years, and am not willing to throw my personal thoughts and feelings out to anyone. i've learned from past experience that too much honesty can hurt others.

this journal will be a collection of ideas, links, pictures, and concepts.
