Bio:I was born in 1922 in Philadelphia just before my father became Secretary of State of Pennsylvania.

I was an only child for five wonderful years, but then three brothers and a sister followed. Later we all moved to New Jersey, and I graduated from Mt. Lakes High. Following a secretarial course, I worked as a typest in New York's Radio City until I married a newly-graduated West Pointer in June 1943.

He soon went overseas, and I lived in New Orleans with my Mother-in-law and new baby son. At the war's end, little Mark and I were on the second dependent ship to Italy where we lived on the Lido of Venice for one year.

Back in the U.S. we had two more children, and while my husband again was overseas--this time in Korea--Mark, then 8 1/2 was killed by a teen-driven car.

My heart was broken.

We had a year in Japan, but the marriage was over. After a divorced, I married another Army officer, and we had three children.

The last, Charmaine, died of CribDeath at 6 months old. Another heart break!

Then it was back to Japan where I became active in two theater groups, did some TV, became president of a large International Organization, judged college English speech and drama contests, traveled doing photo journalism, attended beautiful Embassy parties and taught in three universities.

My husband returned to the States, and I remained in Japan for many years, returning only to work for a B.A. degree in English Lit at San Francisco State and an M.A. degree in Theater at San Jose State.

By then I was in my 60's.

Now at 80 I feel so blessed to have had such an exciting life and even more grateful that I still have my health. Hopefully I can hang in there happily for the next twenty year!!!

Journalism

My life in Japan was so varied that there was never a dull moment. Besides teaching in Japanese universities and colleges, high school English speech contests, judging four famous universities’ annual English Drama contests, abridging, editing and recording, my social life was a whirl. I was one of the lucky non-diplomats invited to many of the colorful foreign embassy parties. In this way I got to know many of the ambassadors and their wives and through them started another fascinating phase of my life—photo journalism.

A good example of how this helped me is the way the Turkish ambassador and his wife, who became two of my dearest friends, arranged for me to visit their country twice as a guest of their government. I was provided with a car, driver and guide and many of the expenses of hotels and travel within the country were covered. Both times my resulting stories were front page news in the popular once a week newspaper called THE WEEKENDER which was published in Tokyo. The editor, Corky Alexander, gave me as much space as I needed and always wrote a flattering introduction to my stories. It was the best of times.

Some of my other stories were of Sri Lanka where I spent ten days over Christmas; New Zealand where I spent two weeks over Christmas; Bali, Indonesia, where I spent a week over Christmas; Uganda and Kenya, Africa where I went on a photo safari in the latter country; England, Scotland, Spain, Korea and many others. Always I have tried to put some human interest into my travel stories to compete with the proliferation of such articles these days. I have very close friends now in Turkey, Hungary, Spain, Sweden, and of course England and Japan.
