| Bio: | Whenever I am reading a book, magazine, blog or anything, I always want to know more about the author. I just like to find out what sort of personal place the writer is coming from. So if you are like me and want to know all the nitty-gritty details, you have come to the right place in my blog!
My name is Carla. I have been writing this blog since mid 2003. It’s my first and only blog. I always felt that I had a lot to say…a lot of stories, a lot of opinions, a lot to report. So I figured a blog was a good place to put all of that stuff that was going around in my head. When I started writing this blog, I wanted to write things that would make people smile, think and laugh. I hope I have done those things.
When I started writing this blog, I used to call myself Spacegirl Princess Carla. That’s why the blog address has “sgpcarla” in it. I wish I could change the blog address now, because I’ve grown out of that name. I was calling myself Carla Gypsygirl for a bit, too, but I don’t like that name so much now, either. Carla is the only real part of either of those names, so I’m just sticking with that for now.
I’m 25 years old. I was born in Sydney, Australia. My dad worked in sales before I started school, so I spent a few years living in Melbourne and Adelaide, too. Both of those cities are lovely places, and I have very fond memories of them. My family moved back to Sydney when I was around 5, and I have stayed in Sydney ever since. I still live with my family, and have never moved out of home. I live with my mum, dad, sister Sonya (22), and brothers Derrick (20) and Zachary (10). I had a cat when I was in primary school, but it died after a year. It was actually retarded, and I was afraid of it. We have a little bird, but I ignore it, which is probably a bit mean.
I went to an all-girls, public high school, and was completely obsessed with being a super student. At university, I studied graphic design, majoring in illustration, and I graduated in 2003. I worked briefly as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator, before working full-time as a graphic designer and fashion assistant for a fashion design company. That was a bit of a disaster- crazy boss, not enough money, the usual, so I freaked out and quit after a year. After that, in 2006, I worked for a year in a posh department store, selling luxury handbags to rich (and mostly boring) people. During that year and the beginning of 2007, I achieved a life-long dream of acting in a feature film. I had a tiny role in the movie- I played a schoolgirl. The movie will be released probably at the end of 2007, so I will definitely let everyone know when it is out (and what it is called!). In 2007, I tried to get back into the graphic design biz, and I started working for a watch company, doing their catalogue and poster design. That didn’t work out, so I decided to try working in a different industry, and leave design for my own enjoyment and spare time. I am now working as a receptionist, and I am loving it. I have also done a whole bunch of different, weird jobs, like tutoring illustration at my old university, working in childcare and working in a bakery.
I am engaged to my boyfriend, Geoff. He is my first real boyfriend. I did have one other boyfriend before him, but I don't really count him because it was such a disaster. Geoff is totally lovely. He is 3 years younger than me, and when he asked me out the first time, I said no, because I thought he was too young. After 18 months, I crawled back to him, and since then, well, we have been totally in love. We’ve been together for 2 ½ years now. We got engaged at the end of last year, and will probably get married early in 2008. Geoff is studying to be a teacher, but he really wants to be a rock star. He is really smart and cultured. He also has brown curly hair, manly facial hair and is Australian-born with a nice blend of Irish, Scottish, Jewish and German heritage.
I have a Chinese heritage, and will probably be confused about my cultural identity for my entire life. I do not speak Chinese, do not know what most of the rainbow-coloured desserts are at yum-cha, hate manga and do not believe in feng-shui. But I also love seeing strong, Asian women in the media, I hate racism, and I love hung bao (red packets with money in them). I consider myself to be Australian and Chinese at the same time. I travelled a bit when I was a teenager- I went to fascinating places like Alaska, Indonesia and Spain- but I don’t really have the travel bug. I don’t have a car either, which is what happens when you spend most of your adult life being an artist.
I like to think of myself as a creative spirit, so you will often see me taking photos, making silly videos, drawing pictures, writing and reading. I am never without something to read! Some of the books I have read this year and loved are “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle” (Haruki Murakami), “The Secret History” (Donna Tartt), “Born on a Blue Day” (Daniel Tammet), “High Fidelity” (Nick Hornby), “Forever in Blue” (from “The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants” series, Ann Brashares) and “Girl, Interrupted” (Susanna Kaysen). I am also crazy about fashion, so I read a lot of magazines. My favourites are Nylon (America), Jane (America), Vogue (Australia), Russh (Australia) and Frankie (Australia). I love music, too, but then, so do most people. Aretha Franklin rules, but you will also find shameful trash pop on my playlists. My favourite TV shows right now are “Ugly Betty”, “America’s Next Top Model” and “Gilmore Girls”. I also like a bit of YouTube, like the “Chad Vadar” series. As an aspiring actress, I am also crazy about movies. My favourites are “Amelie”, “Garden State”, “Clueless”, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, “Somersault”, “Bride and Prejudice” and “Mean Girls”.
Oh, and of course, the most important thing about me: I am a Christian! I have been a passionate Jesus fan since 2000, and I regularly go to church and read the Bible. Geoff is also a Christian. We both go to a local Presbyterian church. We don’t consider ourselves to be Presbyterian (or Anglican, Baptist, etc). I just like to think that I am saved through Jesus’ grace. My faith guides all of my important and not-so-important decisions.
I am so grateful for all of the support and friendship I have received from my blog readers. I never really knew if people would be interested in what I thought or what I had to say. So a big thank you to anyone who has been reading my blog over the years, anyone who has written a comment, or even if you have just started reading. It means a lot to me.
