| Bio: | I’m Natalie Hershlag Portman but I prefer Nat. I just graduated college, early I might add, with a degree in Psychology. In early June I turned 22. I’m a Gemini so I’m allowed to change my mind everyday.
I remember when I was younger, thinking, Why wouldn't someone want to be famous? But when you get older, you realize it's a lot less about your place in the world, but your place in you. I tend to be a very private person.
We moved from Jerusalem to Washington when I was three. My family moved around a great deal (due to dad’s job) and ended up in Syosset, New York. Mine story is one of those old Hollywood stories where the starlet was discovered in the drug store. For me it was a pizza parlor by a Revlon model scout. For a while I modeled but I wanted more. So I turned to acting.
When I was 12 I starred in the movie Léon. This film was the turning point in my career. My parents felt a traditional education was important so I only worked during the summer. My grades got me into Harvard. I get teased a great deal about my degree but it’s something to fall back upon. There's so much else to do in the world. To just be interested in doing films would limit my life.
I’ve had the opportunity to hone my craft by working on the stage in ‘The Seagull’ and ‘The Diary of Anne Frank.’ I try to stay grounded. I’ve done so much and have been lucky but that doesn’t mean the roles will continue or that I will want to continue to act. I was 15 when I started filming Star Wars. At that time I signed a ten-year contract, which then seemed like a lifetime, but now it’s hard to believe it’s almost over. Personally I feel very blessed to have worked with the talent I’ve worked with in my movies. Those friendships are very precious to me.
My best friend Rachael is totally my soul mate. She's so amazing and so cool. We're always saying the exact same thing at the same time, we read each other's minds and feel each other's feelings. We can have really deep intellectual discussions, and then the next second be beating each other up and laughing about stupid things. I’d like to find that relationship with the right guy. So in a way I guess I’m looking for mister right. Have I found Mr. Right? Maybe? I was engaged to Jason Behr and I thought he was amazing. The relationship didn't turn out to be so amazing.
But love finds you in the strangest places. I've started a relationship with Jude Law. We'll see where that leads. We were in 'Cold Mountain' together and are filming 'Closer' in January. My last day of 'Star Wars' is September 16. Leaving them is like leaving my second family. |
