This story starts off like any other. There was a birth. Although no one is exactly sure of the exact location of birth, Gish was found floating in an elm tree leaf on the shores of Manitowaning Bay. Catholic priests took her in, raised her in a nearby Indian village and by all accounts had a somewhat uneventful childhood.
Driven by hormones, Gish left Manitoulin Island to seek her fortune at 14. She first landed in Sudbury, Ontario where she studied art and music in a non-descript high school for one year. During this time, she was also employed by the City of Greater Sudbury, usually given a task such as counting the amount of condoms and cigarette butts that were found in Ramsey Lake.
It was at this stage in her life that Gish concentrated on painting. In a recent discussion, she was rumoured to have started with the bare minimum of supplies “I started painting from buckets of tar that were left on sidewalks during the summers of construction in Sudbury, Ontario…Terrible mess and a lot of hassle.”
Gish spend a lot of spare time in dives like the Townehouse Tavern and May’s Tavern. Imagine her benefactor’s surprise when she made collect phone calls to the tune of wolf whistles and terrible Indie bands in the midst of their first Canadian tour. Didn’t go over very well with those in the manse. When further questioned about her activities, she was reported to have answered that only in places like that could you laugh like you meant it, as opposed to some stuffy art gallery in New York City.
At 18, she met and married a man that resembled oatmeal. The next few years of her life are sketchy and not accounted for, mostly for the lack of interest and rumoured activities like knitting and tag-team baking contests in the suburbs of Ottawa.
When she finally surfaced again at 25, Gish embarked on a career in social work and burst back onto the unnatural art scene with stunning examples of everyday interactions in digital format. She’s been famous for documenting her spare time and somewhat strange activities with a digital camera. Her work has been shown in the produce sections of grocery stores across the province.
Now nearing middle age, Gish is currently working on a project that studies the relationships between people and the connections that actually occur within those relationships. The results of her research can be found in a 4 year old online journal, as well as over thousands of photographs stored on her hard drive like secrets.
