ROCK SOUND meets New York’s well-connected punks. “It’s really blowing up out here,” enthuses Jesse, frontman with Brand New. “There are so many great bands on Long Island who are getting records out right now. Most people say there’s a common sound among bands from the North East and I think that’s true- it’s a little more hardcore, there’s definitely more of an edge to it.” Certainly, if ever there was a living example of the phrase, ‘it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,’ then these guys are it. “John from Taking Back Sunday taught me to play guitar,” recalls Jesse, also their first bass player. “I really wouldn’t have wanted to grow up anywhere else.” And it doesn’t stop there, because it was thanks to drummer Brian’s connections that Brand New managed to finish their debut album. “Back then we were all in full-time jobs or in high school,” he explains. “Brian was working in a studio in new York and we’d go up there after hours, sneak in and record tracks.” Currently working on their sophomore effort however, the foursome have the luxury of being able to dedicate all their time to music following the success of 2001’s ‘Your Favorite Weapon’ Stateside. “It’s going to be a lot slower than the stuff on the last record, a few more ballads maybe,” he says. “I’ve matured lyrically too so there’s not so much girl/guy stuff, but I’m still writing about relationships between people.” And with Jesse’s musical taste constantly expanding, it’s a well-rounded Brand New that’s set to return. “I’ve been listening to more foreign bands- I’m really into Mogwai and Coldplay and I’m obsessed with The Smiths and Morrissey. But Sigur Ros is my favourite band right now, they can do no wrong,” he gushes. “I think you write your best songs when you’re influenced by different music. I couldn’t listen to Blink-182 because we’d end up sounding like them.” Fortunately, with song titles like ‘Jude Law and A Semester Abroad’ (“about an ex-girlfriend who turned me on to Jude Law and that whole English thing”- Jesse) there’s not much chance of that. “For a while back there we copied Taking Back Sunday,” he continues. “They’d name their songs by sitting in front of the listings channel on cable, getting drunk and waiting for a good show title to come up.” On a more serious note, the band will soon be looking for a new label when their contract with Triple Crown runs out, though as Jesse points out, they’re in no hurry to move. “The list of people who are interested in us is endless, but the list of who we’re interested in isn’t. But financially it’ll be really important because we come off tour and we’re still living at home- and I’m one of seven kids. I just hope we get what’s coming to us.” Right now, that a warm UK welcome alongside headliners Finch. “I’m glad we’re not the ones having to worry about drawing the crowds through,” he smiles." - rocksound / march 2003 ASX Low / ASX High / RAM
