Christina woke the next morning, still wearing the previous day's clothes. She got up and went to change. As she crept downstairs she saw a strange man in the living room with her mom. Christina tried to make it to the kitchen without being seen of heard but...
"Oh, Christina, you're up!" Dang squeaky stairs.
"Christina, this is your father, David. Remember when I told you he had to go away for a few years to work for the navy? Well he took a month off to spend time with you." Christina barely remembered her dad, who left when she was 9 to go help with the wars. Now that she saw him again, she didn't know where to start. She always told her dad about every little problem in her life. But she felt like he was a stranger, and she couldn't tell him anything. Everyone remained quiet until Christina made her escape.
"I should get some breakfast." She made a dash for the kitchen to get something to eat. She planned on waffles, but one glance at the clock told her she had 15 minutes to get ready for school. She grabbed a handful of breakfast bars instead, deciding she would eat them before school. As she ran back up to her room for her books, she tripped on the steps. Of course no one was around to help her. She pressed her hand to her chin, and when she removed it, there was blood all over it. She ran to the bathroom upstairs and washed off her face and hand. She examined her chin in the mirror. Definite scar. Whatever. She put a band-aid on it and grabbed her books from her room. She stuffed them in her backpack, and slung it over her shoulder. She ran down the stairs, carefully this time.
"Mom! I'm ready to-" She saw her dad standing at the door with keys in hand. Christina shrugged and went out the door. Her dad led her into a jeep. Her jaw practically dropped when she saw it. If this didn't impress Jake, nothing will. She hopped in, and as her dad pulled onto the freeway, she loved the feel of the wind rushing through her hair. Her dad made no attempt to establish communication between them, but did say 'Have a nice day' when he dropped her off.
Christina automatically walked towards where she and Jackie always would hang, but Jackie and her new 'crew' were there. Forget that then. She walked up towards the school instead. She needed extra help from Mrs. Pelandio in Life Skills anyways. She was about to climb up the steps when a familiar hand touched her shoulder. She spun around and saw Jake.
"Hey, Christina, I was just wondering if you really want to go out with me."
"Of course I do! Why wouldn't I?"
"Well, because-" The bell cut him off, and they were separated by a stampede of students. Dang. Christina went with the flow and went inside with them.
At the end of the day, Christina was beat. She spent all lunch hour, and every moment between classes to find Jake, but he wasn't anywhere to be seen. She would just call him tonight and ask what he was going to say. But when she got home, fate had other plans...
