do you think she was talking to me, you or herself?

i should never write a specific list of goals for myself. for some reason, it makes me less likely to accomplish them than if i were just to retain an unspecific compilation of said goals in my head.

that said, it should be no surprise that i really didn't do anything over the weekend that i mentioned in the last entry. i didn't 1. open that savings account because i chose to go to the movies with my parents on saturday morning instead. so in a sense, this was something i couldn't help. but it was fun. i don't think i've been to the movies with both mom and pop since you've got mail back in 1998. we saw chicago, which i'd already seen but they hadn't, and as much as i enjoyed it the first time, it was even better the second.

moving on, i didn't 2a. buy a set of weights because i didn't feel like figuring out how to get them to the car. but i did glance up the fitness aisle in target, and decided if i bought them and were to 2b. have salespeople mock me when i ask for help carrying weights to car, it would be better to get weights at a sporting goods, where they'd actually help me carry them to the car after they mocked me. but i did buy about a half-dozen DVDs, so give me credit for buying something. let's see. i did 3. go to the movies, but i didn't go more than once, if possible, because it wasn't possible. this is because i was too busy trying to 4. finish the glen burnie sidebars and profiles, which i also didn't get done because i ran out of time. and i sure didn't 5. rewrite something i wrote in the fall. i didn't even get to think about it. so there. i completely crapped all over my weekend goals.

but here's what i did do. i sorta crashed friday as soon as i got home from work, worn out from having the flu followed closely by a sinus infection, and when i snapped back into consciousness, i watched some movies i'd rented. s1m0ne was OK. it had its moments, but they were few and far between. unfaithful was entertaining, intriguing and well-acted, this despite some obtuse moments, and i really think diane lane deserves an oscar nomination for her gutsy performance. and i really enjoyed tadpole, which, if you can get past the whole statutory-rape-played-as-a-screwball-comic-situation, is quite a smart, character-driven tale. bonus fun factor: aaron stanford plays pyro in the new x-men movie.

saturday was mostly taken up with my outing with the folks. we left before 9 a.m. and didn't return until around 6 p.m. so that was exhausting. yesterday was exhausting too, but damn, it was fun. i went out with steph for the first time in, oh, weeks. yeah, we went to glen burnie so i could check on a few last-minute additions to the story, but steph was there, so the whole trip was side-splittingly insane.

we hit a charmingly ghetto big lots and that big-ass liquor store that looks like a barn, and then our trip inside the dollar hut was cut short by some crazy customer who apparently thought i was trying to hit on her when i glanced down the aisle she was in and briefly made eye contact with her. she slammed the can of cheeseballs she was holding back down on the shelf and proceeded to storm towards me, loudly muttering things like, "oh, i KNOW you wasn't lookin' at ME tryin' to get with THIS cos you think you so FLY!" i pretended to ignore her as i quickly got out of her way, but for a brief moment, i thought she was about to claw my eyes out with her wal-mart press-on nails, and i briefly began to worry that i would tragically meet my end in a place called "the dollar hut." but i regrouped with steph, who saw and heard the whole ordeal and thought the woman was talking to her, and we still don't really know what happened or who she was talking to.

so once we finished up on crain highway, we visited ritchie highway, where we spent way too much time and money in record & tape traders. but on the plus side, my money was spent on some live howie day and ryan adams singles/imports, a used matthew good band CD, and new vinyls of coldplay and (oh yes) the beatles! i got with the beatles on vinyl -- so mint i could cry! now all i need is some turntables and i'll be set.

while we were driving around looking for the honey bee diner, justin timberlake's "cry me a river" came on the radio. in a fit of twisted inspiration, steph flicked my bass setting up so savagely that the knob popped off and flew through the air, landing in a yet-undetermined spot on my car's filthy floor. it was one of the funniest things i've seen lately, and i will never be able to listen to that song in quite the same way again.

we then finally located the honey bee diner, which is really kind of a less-classy double-T. that sounds really sad, but there was a certain worn charm to the place that could only come from glen burnie. steph compiled a list of quotes during the experience that i will have to transcribe in an entry tonight, as the paper is sitting on my desk at home. once our appetizers were consumed and our bill was paid, it had started snowing, so we headed over to ann's dari creme (yes, that's how it's spelled), our last stop, where i have never dined despite driving by it several hundred times in the 18 years i've lived in the area. terrific milkshakes and hot dogs. now i know why the place has been around for 51 years.

at that point, visibility was crap, so we retreated back to lower anne arundel county, but damn, we have so many new inside jokes now. and i also have this sweet live howie day single, which i am really digging right now because it reminds me of my last birthday at merriweather, which was one of the most chaotic and hilarious and all-around fun times ever.

so i guess the moral of the story is, even though the weekend completely didn't go as planned, it was still a good one. the only sucky thing is, i will be spending tonight finishing the glen burnie stories.

and possibly looking for the knob from my bass setting. hahaha.
