    ABC calls it
Barack Hussein Obama, 44th President of the United States.

And he carries Virginia, heart of the Confederacy.

Goodnight folks, I'm off to bask in joy & relief & amazement for the next several hours.

    Well done, America.

YAY.

Now where do I send that thank you letter to Ms Palin? Alaska, was it, or Russia?

I'm sure if it goes to Russia by mistake, someone can walk it over to her house.

I suspect that most Georgians, Alabamans, and Mississippians would disagree with your calling Virginia the "heart of the Confederacy", but your point is well taken. A pretty amazing achievement for our President-elect, and a heartening change in sentiment for several formerly red states and the nation as a whole.

Or more simply: yay!

Well, Richmond, VA was the capital of the Confederate States of America. Bull Run near Manassas was the first major battle in the Civil War. And Robert E. Lee was offered a generalship for the Union Army, and the reason he gave for refusing was that he just couldn't take up arms against his home state of Virginia. He was actually opposed to slavery, and never owned slaves.

Ah, Civil War geekery.
