    Midget Monkey

With age comes experience, and this two month old monkey has some new powers to counteract our tricks of getting her to sleep:

    • Monkey power of cheerio mouth-- combats vacuum

    • Monkey power of sticking tongue out repeatedly-- combats swing

    • Monkey power of extreme bicep strength-- combats swaddling

I was talking to my hairdresser yesterday who is pregnant with twins and remembering all the fears of pregnancy. How funny it is now that these fears are multiplied once the baby is born, and increasingly insane. It started with worrying about SIDS every time Elena was asleep. Now I have irrational fears such as worrying that I will accidentally throw her over the balcony (thanks to Ammon for this one) and that she is a midget (little people start off as regular sized babies, right?? Strangers, in addition to saying how beautiful and/or adorable she is, keep telling me she is tiny for her age).

Ammon is back at work this week and I have been his chauffer, so it's been a pretty exciting week for Elena. We have today off because Miriam is visiting from Ohio and drove Ammon to York this morning. We started our Christmas shopping on Wed. and although Elena was really good at the Bon Ton, the stupid store is so not stroller friendly (although not as bad as Shippensburg University on Tuesday where you can't use the elevators if you don't have a key and the doors don't have wheelchair access buttons and the students are too rude to hold the door for you-- I think I'm going to right a threating-ish letter to their disabilities office because I don't consider that equal access). So it was basically a bust that day but I will not give up! I will lead a normal life even with infant! That's all for now seeing as monkey powers are reviving Elena from her deep sleep on my shoulder. Stay tuned for a Race update...

Oh my goodness--the first picture is sooooo cute and hilarious! I was in the middle of answering the phone when I opened it up and I started giggling on the phone. Oops. So I called Brett over to look at it and he goes "What a cute little monkey!" And I didn't even tell him that's what you guys call her! How funny!

You will have to forgive me for thinking it is hillarious that you would A) worry about accidentally throwing your baby over the balcony (possibly a symptom of Michael Jackson syndrome?), and B)worry about the baby being a midget. The latter almost caused me to do a spit-take.

On to the main point of my comment--I am amused by the idea that you refer to the baby as resembling a "monkey," because, from these pictures, at least, the baby strikes me as bearing a strong resemblance to Ammon (so much so that perhaps she should be called "Ammina").

Ok, let me clarify what I mean when I say I am afraid of throwing her over the balcony. I am not afraid that I will intentionally do so (which would be insane). I am afraid I'll be walking along and trip or she'll do one of her full body jerks when I'm not paying attention. This strikes me as perfectly cromulent.

yea, well we all have fears like those. it just comes with the territory of being a mom. just wait until they actually start falling and they do get hurt. both alex and tucker have stitiches...from the wierdest things i might add.
alex: falling head into toilet paper holder..stitches. falling in bath onto barrel of monkeys...medical amazing super glue stuff. (never buy barrels of monkeys!!!)
tucker: fell head first into lower door jam while walking out the door....again medical amazing super glue stuff. can now and forever more be harry potter for halloween.

oh man, i totally hear you with the irrational fear thing. i used to be really scared that there would be a razor blade in my hamburger and i would cut my mouth open. i would think that every time i drove by mcdonalds. i would also be really scared that i would accidentally sit on Pearl or step on her or something to accidentally kill her. maybe it's a girl thing....or maybe it's a Lee-girl thing cause i think jennette has weird fears too. whatever it is, i totally know what you meant when you said you'd be scared you'd throw her over the balcony

I have the most irrational fears--some of them are so crazy I won't even post them here, but I'll give you a few examples just to make you feel better (Joseph, be prepared for a "spit-take): I used to have an extreme fear of accidentally/purposefully (I know exactly what Heather means by this) stabbing Truman (my cat and the inpiration for my blurty name). When we first got Scout I had this fear of driving with him in a covertible and him squirming away from me and and getting run over by the car behind us--this is completely irrational being that I don't own a convertible, nor do I know anyone else who does. But I do notice a pattern--the irrational fears I've had with all my pets happen when I first get them, then gradually go away. Maybe it's the same with Elena?? And here's something that should make us all feel better (because I am all for looking at other people's problems and feeling better about my own): On the news last week I heard about a man who was so scared to seal up an evelope because he was afraid he had trapped his daughter in there.

It is true that Elena has red eyes in the pictures much like her father does now from the accident but if you are saying that Ammon looks like a monkey, so be it.

My fear is actually that I will purposefully throw her over the balcony on accident. It's hard to explain-- sort of like the suicide impulse of thinking you might jump when you are on a high place with no guard rail or wanting to open the car door when you are going at a high speed. Maybe I'm the only one who has this problem. But I combat it with the monkey by holding on to her tighter as I walk in that part of the house.
