Interesting article. But right now I'd say this one study is very much in the minority and actually the fact that it doesn't have to be water has become more and more accepted for a while now, that part is not new.

The article you linked to has appeared in quite a few papers. Its actually based on a news release from Dartmouth College that was issued for journalists back in August 2002 - http://www.dartmouth.edu/dms/news/2002_h2/08aug2002_water.shtml

Hee is the link to the reference in the article about where the 8 glasses recommendation came from - http://216.239.39.100/search?q=cache:xLFME5AiqLsC:www.usda.gov/cnpp/Insights/insight27.pdf+%228+glasses+of+water+a+day%22+%22scientific+study%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 - and you'll see more detail about why 8 glasses is recommend - for example:

"The human body cannot store water; therefore, fluid mustbe replaced and kept in balance daily. Body water turnoverrate is estimated to be 4% of total body weight to maintainnormal body functions, which include excretion of bodywaste and evaporation from the lungs and skin..."

It seems the media, as usual, has latched onto something and blown it out of proportion. 8 glasses is a general recommendation and is certainly adjustable based on your lifestyle and other factors, but it appears to be a good generalization.
