You're absolutely right about the point of saving being a poor choice for the sole access to files comments; I didn't go into it, just a quick post, but all I was really talking about was a similar feature to Word presenting the Document Properties window upon save, as a reinforcement to entering the meta-data.
As you say, it's necessary to have this feature available elsewhere in an app. The more interesting point, that I wasn't really making in that paltry post (!), was the exposure of the Spotlight comments field within applications; I don't think I've seen or heard of any apps that allow you to edit the file's Finder/Spotlight comments within the application.
As you're pointing out the need to have better access to this file meta-data, I'm actually agreeing, and saying that you should be able to edit the comments from the Finder, and the app, and that the system could further encourage the use of this meta-data, but making it accessible at one of the key points in a document's life, when it might be more likely for comments to be applied.
I've suggested this to a number of developers, who've seemed interested, but none have bitten just yet... it's not exactly the sexiest feature, but it would be another small step along the way to adding greater depth of meta, and actionable data to the system.
Similar to the original idea, I'd like the ability to comment bookmarks as they're saved, as well as in the bookmark manager, and the same could apply for pages in your history as well... with both being available to Spotlight.
Ideally I'd like to be able to comment bookmarks, and be reminded of the comment when visiting the page; there are a number of ways to do something like this, OnFolio for Windows being a prominent one.(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

I think this is an excellent idea, irrespective of which option a developer might take. Perhaps both might be best, and if you were to need to resave the comments at a later date, they could always be "live" within the save dialog at each save when necessary. Please update if you find such software as I found this thread after searching google for this very extension. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

I'm very sorry (if you ever see this again!) somehow I missed this comment when first posted. Thanks for your positive take on it, I've been thinking about this issue again recently, so it might just be time to start lobbying a few developers again!
Of course, Spotmeta is a good start.(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

Wow. I can't believe that no one has taken this up. If spotlight is supposed to be so ubiqutous, then you should also be able to add custom keywords whenever. So the first step is being able to add them at the time of saving a file. After all, there is a spotlight window there anyway. After that point there should be some sort of shortcut that takes you directly into a keyword input window for the current document that is active. For example: reading a pdf, i hit the add spotlight comment shortcut and I add keywords for that active document. eg2, in word, at time of save, I have an option to add spotlight comments, but then at anytime after that i hit the shortcut and can edit those comments. The idea of adding comments at the time of save is in no way a poor idea - the other person just hasn't thought it through enough. Spotlight does make it easy to find things later, but it also is very time consuming to organise it to be organised with specific files! So...whether it's at the time or save or whenever, customising spotlight must be across the os, not just the search function.
