Finally caught up on Angel
Spoiler warning. Nothing specific 'cause, well, I haven't written the entry yet.
Okay, working backwards. I'm just interested to see how they're going to explain that the Shanshu prophecy doesn't apply to Spike. I mean as far as it eventually applying to Angel, fine, whatever. What's going to have to happen is more information being given that would differentiate between Spike and Angel. The part I'm curious about is how Spike doesn't qualify. I was really irked when Wesley seemed to dismiss the idea that it even could be Spike. I mean I'm already kind of bothered by the idea that it hadn't occurred to him, but to have the question posed and have him decide that no, it's not a possibility... what is that? The whole "vampire with a soul that isn't already a ghost" line, first of all-- why not? Second of all he wasn't a ghost when he helped saved the world. Third "to live again," why couldn't that be his new ghostly existence? I guess I'm just annoyed that the Shanshu prophecy is getting re-written and re-interpreted every time it's mentioned these days. Anyway, I did enjoy the episode. It was nice that Spike had lines other than "I'm a bloody ghost."
The Halloween ep: Rock on. Lorne is great, I'm so glad somebody else got a spotlight. Angel's getting on my nerves. The whole Angel/Eve sex thing was great, as was Gunn "marking his territory." Oh and Mr. Positivity. Excellent. That has to be the best ep of the season so far, even if it was a little Something Blueish.
I think I may still have missed an ep. But whatever... not too upset about it.
In other news, I've added Everwood, Gilmore Girls and The O.C. to my must watch list. Allow me to riff on these for a minute. (Or don't, whatever, it's my journal) I think it's great that finally tv has put on a couple of great shows that aren't centered around sex or violence. Every so often I tried to watch 7th Heaven because I was behind the idea of it. Problem is it's not a good show. This became crystal clear once Everwood premiered. Everwood is definitely family entertainment, but not lame. It's well-written and well-performed. Gilmore Girls is a little racier, but still definitely within the family genre. Also extremely well-written and well-acted. And kudos to the WB for their whole Sunday repeat-a-thon. People need to watch these shows. And The O.C.-- it's just funny. There's something there. I thought it was going to be terrible, I figured Fox was producing 90210:The Next Generation... but there's a self-awareness and a sense of reality that 90210 & Melrose never had. Plus the cast is ridiculous... in a good way.
So anyway, if you're not watching these shows, check them out, they've saved television (at least for me.) But fear not, I certainly haven't abandoned Angel, CSI, Without a Trace or West Wing. Actually, due to unfortunate scheduling, I sort of have abandoned West WIng since it comes on the same time as Angel & The O.C. I've also been told I have to check out Joan of Arcadia. So I might be picking that up too.
TTFN... (can't believe I just wrote that...)

Yes, there is, and here's why--Angel was cursed with his soul. He brooded, he moped, he did very very little in the first few years/decades/centuries that was truly dedicated to helping other people. In fact, when we first meet him through Buffy's eyes, he is still that trapped and brooding creature, with an added dollop of a very smug sarcasm that seems wildly inappropriate every time I see the first few first season shows. So it can't be him. It has to be a mistake.
Why? Because Spike went out and got his soul back. Fought for it. Wanted it. Wanted to be a better man. And, hey, soulless chipped demon here, pre-soul return, he was helping--he was fighting evil, gaining a rep as a demon that killed demons, before he ever got the soul.
Now, in the beginning, I was thinking, that was never Spike's intention, to return with a soul. He wanted something else and he got a soul--sort of the unwanted prize in the box of Cracker Jack's. But, the way Joss and company played it out afterwards, I got to seeing how he knew exactly what he was doing--and what he was going to get by doing it.
So, you've got a vampire, who gets a soul, who saves the world, who's now dead--what better time for the Shanshu prophecy to kick in? Because, remember, 'shanshu' means both 'live' and 'die'--To Shanshu in LA was then the literary play on words--To Live AND Die in LA.
So what's Spike doing now? Hanging around dead. What could he do in future? Live. Which does not, btw, preclude Angel ending with Buffy coming back and choosing him. Because, really, of the two of them? Spike could handle a Buffy/Angel reunion better than Angel could deal with Buffy/Spike. :)
