    Still processing...
I saw the Angel ep. Still processing it, but I feel a little let down. Also, Is it just me or did the writers just totally backpedal? Fred says something like "If Angel does enough good deeds, he gets to become human." enough good deeds? That's not the Shanshu prophecy. At least that's not what it's been for 4 years. They're makin' stuff up now because they apparently don't want Spike to Shanshu.

Anyway, I did find a lot of the ep really funny. I really liked the couch scene with Angel & Spike.

Here's my take on the ep, though. First thing--the couch bit was hysterical. "I always liked your poetry." "You like Barry Manilow!"

Priceless.

But here's my theory on the whole Shanshu thing, the one I've been maintaining for years now--everyone in Angel's employ, and Angel, for that matter, thinks the prophecy relates to Angel. Even Spike, now, thinks the prophecy relates to Angel.

Me, personally? I think it relates to Spike. And in a year or so they might ring that change on us. In fact...that's what might bring him back to being human from ghost-form.

Seriously.

And I think the writers know this, and let Angel's people speak the prophecy as if Angel's the one still behind it. But it's not true, and Joss has dropped enough clues for me to believe it's not true.

I'm down with that, here's the problem. SOMEBODY (I'm thinking Wesley) should at least have considered it by now. I'm thinking that Wesley's inner nerd would have screamed SHANSHU as soon as he learned that Spike had a soul. (Angel too for that matter)
Also, I don't believe that 4 years ago the writers were planning to give Spike a soul, so originally it had to be Angel.

I get that Fred wouldn't necessarily know the details, but I feel deep in my soul that Wes would have researched the prophecy at some point. As fas as Spike goes, he's only ever heard Fred's interpretation of it (& she couldn't even pronounce Shanshu) so that let's him off the hook. Angel wants it to be him and probably has talked about it in those terms. That pretty much lets everybody off the hook... EXCEPT WES.

I have no problem with the writers changing gears- they want to "surprise" us and make it Spike? Great. The problem is the terms of the prophecy were clearly stated as this: vampire with a coul + help avert apocalypse = Shanshu (become human). Now, clearly it's not that simple b/c SPike would already be human. Actually you could argue that Angel would too. So there has to be something that hasn't been said yet. I also think it's completely plausible that they both Shanshu. That would be the real shocker. What I have a problem with is that the characters are rewriting the prophecy. Now I can't tell if we're supposed to just pretend that's what it said all along or believe that Wes & Angel wouldn't have caught such an obvious glitch in their previous assumption.

Okay. end rant.

PS- glad to have you back ;)
