    Current mood:sleepy

    *early morning, day 10*
Morning. The faint sound of birdsong alone was enough to rouse an Elf from deep, dreamless sleep, even when the sound was muffled by thick walls of stone. Haldir drew slowly back to consciousness, aware of being warm and comfortably nestled against another body, some thought nagging far at the back of his mind, but not enough to disturb this moment of contentment.

Unlike other Elves who sought beauty and knowledge from without or from within their own minds, Haldir had always found both comfort and fascination in his own body, the sound of his breath, the pull of his muscles as he stretched, catlike, upon the bed. He inhaled deeply, and his senses were filled with brotherscent, as welcome and familiar as the light of the Golden Wood, something he had known since birth.

Rumil, he could tell, had left the room just moments before, the sheets likely still carrying his lingering warmth, but Orophin was pressed close to him, his smell and the even sound of his breath soothing. Haldir could feel the balmy gust of Orophin's breathing against his throat as his elder brother lay against him, almost atop him. The Marchwarden made a soft sound in the back of his throat, practically a purr, his eyes slitted against the growing light of dawn that spilled through the window.

A soft sound of contentment welled up from Orophin's throat as he snuggled up against his lover. He brushed his lips across the soft skin of Elladan's throat, his fingers ghosting lightly along the sharp swell of hipbone, and pressing flat against the hardness of a muscular thigh. "Maer aur, Elladan," he whispered as he opened his eyes...

... to encounter silver hair and the scent of Haldir.

His eyes snapped open fully and he practically flung himself to the other side of the bed, his eyes wide like a cornered animal as he stared at his brother. His heart was pounding as he struggled to recall as to whether or not he had revealed anything aloud... and whether or not he had actually be touching his brother as such...

Haldir jerked awake just as Orophin swiftly moved away from him. He sat bolt upright, his dark eyes wide and bewildered. his jaw slackened at what Orophin had just inadvertently revealed.

"Elladan?" he whispered, awestruck, and then he clenched his jaw, gritting his teeth as his brows drew together. "Elladan?"

The pit of Orophin's stomach dropped out and his spine turned to ice as Haldir repeated that name...

He gracefully slid from the bed and slowly stood, keeping a trained and wary gaze on the Marchwarden. He held his hands up in front of him, as if warding Haldir back. "Haldir..." he said quietly, a warning tone in his voice indicating that Haldir should, perhaps, try to keep his temper.

His eyes flickering with anger, Haldir glared up at his brother, though the near-hate in his eyes was obviously directed toward another. Lips curling into a slight sneer, Haldir hissed, "Is there nothing in my life that snake has not poisoned?"

Orophin inhaled slowly and deeply, trying to collect his bearings once more. "Haldir," he said quietly and firmly. "You will keep this to yourself, is that understood? Not even a word to Rumil."

"No, I will not say a word to Rumil," Haldir replied, his voice dangerously cold as he slid to the edge of the bed. "But perhaps he will guess," he continued, rising swiftly and fluidly to his feet, "once he hears of what has happened to our precious young Lord!"

Orophin calmly placed himself between Haldir and the door, his eyes going steely. "Do you think for one moment that I would allow you to leave this room in such a state?"

Haldir drew himself up slowly, and then paused, his body slowly relaxing as he gazed into his brother's eyes. "He hurt you," he said softly, matter-of-fact.

Orophin said nothing to affirm, but the coldness in his eyes died, and he now simply looked tired. "It was a very long time agao. We were very young. Rumil was not yet even born."

He sighed softly, his eyebrows drawing together gently. "Seeing him again... it brought back the memories I had worked to hard to repress. That is all."

Haldir lifted his hands to cup them against his brother's cheeks, framing Orophin's face between them. "For hurting you I would punish him for eternity, if I could," he said softly. He paused, and then took a deep, slightly shaking breath, continuing tensely, 'Is that what plagued Rumil last evening? More of Elladan's games?"

Haldir lifted his gaze for a moment, and then was forced to turn away, unable to even stare at the floor with the feel of Orophin's eyes upon him. How could he leave? How could he stay? Haldir closed his eyes once more and let his temple rest against the stone frame of the window, his face turned to the light outside. Orophin wished to leave, and Rumil wished to stay... it was up to Haldir to break the tie.

Orophin felt a sudden surge of guilt wash over him. It was not a feeling he felt often, but now it was fresh and cutting. He frowned softly as he stared at Haldir, before turning a concerned gaze to Rumil, squeezing his youngest brother's fingers before gently extracting his hand. He moved slowly towards Haldir, arms folded loosely over his abdomen.

"Forgive me, Haldir. We've no right to ask you to leave..." and his voice cut off as his tongue pressed at the back of his teeth. After a moment, he took a deep breath and finished. "To leave... him."

"Even... even if we do leave," Rumil added softly, approaching. "Even if we were separated one from the other, we shall still be connected, even though we do not see one another. Neither of you are under any obligation to stay with me or leave me... or one another. We are brothers, we are blood, but we are not one person."

"Why must he hold me here?" Haldir said, almost under his breath, more musing aloud than speaking to either of his brothers. "Why is he changing me?" He remained slumped against the windowframe and did not turn toward them.

Orophin's features were soft and almost nearly melancholy as he raised his arms and folded them across his chest, his stance solid but reserved as he regarded Haldir from a few feet away.

"Because you love him and you wish him to," he said very softly, with almost an athority.

Rumil looked from one brother to the other, both relieved and astounded that Orophin had come as far as to admit it, both for his sake and Haldir's. "It is true," Rumil admitted, smiling slightly. "And I, for one, believe you should savour this chance."

Haldir straightened slowly, his head lifting, his shoulders and back going rigid as he began to turn. "No I do not," he said firmly, emphasizing each word as it slipped between his partially clenched teeth. He looked first at Orophin, then Rumil, his eyes hard, but swimming with dark fear and confusion.

"I do not know myself now." Haldir's hands closed into loose fists at his sides. "I do things, and I do not understand why I am doing them. I allow him things I never allow to anyone else. It is terrifying."

Orophin's countenance darkened as he witnessed his brother's confused outburst. He knew exactly why Haldir felt these things, and he also knew that he should encourage him to try and work past them, because only when you love something more than yourself, are you willing to change for it...

But Orophin was selfish, and so Orophin would not make this any easier than he had to.

"Is he worth it?" he asked softly, eyes darkened as he regarded Haldir carefully. "Is he truly?"

Rumil chewed on his lip at Haldir's reaction, then looked to Orophin before he cautiously inquired, "Would you be able to go without seeing him again, Haldir? Could you leave him without hurting both you and he more than you could bear?"

"I don't know," Haldir sighed, lifting his hand and pressing the heel of his palm against his forehead. He glanced at Rumil, then shook his head, leaning back against the windowframe again. "Does it matter? It will happen, if not now, then soon. He cannot stay in Lórien, and I can neither go to Mirkwood or remain here."

Haldir tried not to concern himself with Orophin's dour expression... his elder's opinion meant so much more to him than he revealed. But it was hard to let dark thoughts linger at Rumil's all too infectious enthusiasm. "We will do such a thing now!" Haldir chuckled, giving him an affectionate smile before he turned to draw open the door.

"I will return," he said as he glanced back at them once more, and then he stepped out into the corridor and drew the door closed behind him.

Orophin nodded to Haldir as his younger brother left the room, and then turned his attentions to Rumil, an odd smile on his lips. "Rumil, do calm yourself. You will have no energy left for our journey if you expend it all now."

Rumil grinned at his brother, bobbing on his toes. "You doubt my capacity for energy, muindor?" he challenged mischievously, looking Orophin up and down. "I could still introduce you to defeat, should you wish it?"

Orophin gave a derisive snort and moved to where his over-tunic lay, folded neatly on a chair in the corner of the room. "I've not as much energy as you, Rumil, for I am certain you siphon it from me in my sleep."
