SYLVESTER SIM has morphed from shy guy to rising star.

In just six months, the freelance graphics designer has transformed from a mumbly, gawky nobody to a suave, media-savvy entertainer who plays to the gallery.

Seated at the noisy MediaCorp canteen, Sim is practically incognito in a nondescript ensemble of a blue-hooded jumper and denim jeans.

But the change in him is palpable, say those who know him. It is in his display of confidence or, some say, newfound cockiness. Such an unerring sense of his marketability can be seen in the way he even predicts the line of questioning.

'Let me guess... You're going to ask what my plans are if I don't win?' he says.

'I will try to break into the Chinese music market on my own,' comes his own reply. 'After all, people already know me and know who Sly is,' he elaborates, referring to the nickname his legions of fans have given him.

A self-confessed mischief-maker while at Shuqun Secondary School in Jurong East, he is very clear about his appeal.

'I'm a bad-boy rocker,' he says.

Back in 1999, he and two friends formed a Chinese rock band named Lzefier. The band has not been playing consistently since he entered Singapore Idol.

Joining the contest has improved his English diction, which he admits is still less than desirable. He blames this on national service where he 'hung out with many Ah Bengs'.

Clearly, Sim, who lives with his parents and two younger sisters near Lakeside MRT Station, relishes the fruits of stardom.

He gleefully tells you that his father, who works in the shipping line, is petrified whenever the Idol is approached by fans on the street.

'He runs away from me,' Sim says, laughing. 'He will tell me to entertain them while he stands by himself at one corner.'

But the Idol says he is 'used to people following me around at food courts'.

'Before, I used to avoid eye contact with fans because I felt embarrassed and didn't know how to entertain them, but now I appreciate them and can deal with 100 people easily,' he says as a matter of fact.

'They grab me, they hug me and some even kiss me.'

Once, a fan offered him a piece of tissue paper to wipe his face. When he had done so, she asked for it so that she could keep it as a souvenir.

'They are damn jialat,' he half-jokes. The expression is Hokkien slang for 'terrible'.

But Sim, who is single, admits that fame is exactly what he has wanted all his life.

'When I was young, I always wanted to be a rock star. I wanted to be Axl Rose,' he says, referring to the lead singer of the American rock band Guns N' Roses.

'I believe that if you want fame, you need to work hard for it.'

fRidAy nite. memorable siaxXx. cuz had a sort of CDC comm outing wif seniors.. heh heh.. rock siax.. of there was 13 of us frm cdc.. me..weiting..chormin..xinyan..jocelyn..carol..yenyang..(still short of eve..mengjiat..zaylene..godfrey..) plus our seniors.. sinyee..chengyan..simin..beien..gladys..se-gou aka xintian.. hahaha.. den went to watch ''wu jun ru''.. oh god! the ju4 rawks siax!! is by alvin yanyan and liu laoshi de.. rocks rocks rocks!!! is realli special experience of watching ju4...cuz is 'jin4 ju4 li2 de4 jie1 chu4' worrr!! den after tat gotta vandalize on the walls.. haha.. cool siax.. den watch the drama halfway.. me joce carol xinyan and weiting damn excited lorr.. haha.. is excited abt the Singapore Idol result.. not the drama... kekez.. paiseh ar.. haha.. den joce kip looking at her hp.. everytime her hp vibrate.. the four of us will look at her.. haha.. cuz her hp vibration pro de ah..very loud..haha.. den alot of false alarm.. den after tat..finally.. she said tat sly was in!!! and we're like screaming in our hearts like mad..!! haha.. we very good audience de hor..wun scream rite at the moment... haha.. sly!!!! yippeeeEeee!!! budden sad also.. cuz olinda actually more powerful den sly.. plus somemore sly thu de performances kanna 'suan' by the judges alot.. we already got xin li zhun bei tat sly will be out le. budden sly's fan-base is so damn de po-wer-ful.. wahaha!! so he got in!! yuppiee!!!! sad eh.. the three idols i'd been supporting.. chris oli and sly.. now still left onli sly le.. so.. i'm rooting for sylvester all the way!!! yupp.!! guys. rmb~~ votE for sylvester sim!! it's the best and the excellent and the correct choice!! muauahaaha.. den after tat went to eat wif alvin.. haha.. den go home le.. was a fun outing..looking forward to more comm outings in the future..haha..so can chu jing gan qing u see.. muahaha.. but next time muz everyone be present den better.. haha.. will be suggesting to carol let CDC or the comm haf a christmas sort of party or outing.. heehee.. cDC rocks!!!!!! luving CDC more and more everyday.. luving my comm mates more and more everyday.. luving everyone in [zhi fei ji] more and more everyday!!! heehee.. stop here`
