    Bruises of the ISLANDS...
It is a well-known fact that I bruise ever-so easily (like a beauteous and tender peach?). But I've noticed lately that I've my bruise patterns have begun to look very much like island chains. I'll look down at my legs and all of the sudden I'll be struck with recognition, "Hey - LOOK - it's the Seychelles!" Or, "If THOSE are the Aleutian Islands than I'm not the Queen of Romania." (Okay, technically, I am "Queen of the Genetic Universe" - long story for another time, but I like "Queen of Romania" because it's in a play I love - can't remember which one at the moment...). Or, the worst, "GOD HELP ME - I've got ALL the islands of New Zealand on my right upper thigh!!!"

    Ah, the life I lead.

I have a bruise right above my left ankle that has been there for well over a year. Isn't that odd? I was putting a bag of trash in our big garbage can in our garage, but I had to do some tricky maneuvering because it was a total mess, and unfortunately I'm not very good at tricky maneuvering. I fell and some really heavy metal bar thingys fell on my leg. I went to the doctor's and everything, but he said it wasn't broken...and yet it still hurts when I walk up stairs or up a hill for a long enough. And it's still green and blue!

Oh, and I totally had an Africa bruise on my thigh once.

"I had a farm in Africa...."

Thanks. That was all.

You've had a bruise for a YEAR???? I am wondering at the doctor... Granted, I get TONS and OODLES of bruises - LOOK - AUSTRALIA - but they don't LAST like that. Are you making up for quantity by QUALITY?

Yeah, I've since stopped going to that doctor. I think maybe I bruised the bone or something - I don't know, is that even possible? Tom says I should go ask another doctor, but I feel kind of silly going into the doctor's office for a bruise.

No, GO TO THE DOCTOR

To go to the doctor for just ANY bruise (like the one I just made on my left cheek by walking into a doorway) might be silly, but for any bruise that has LASTED LONGER THAN A YEAR, you go. Besides, you are having other symptoms that something is WRONG with that area.k

Go to the doctor. Yes, they used to teach this whole course in the third year of medical school during which they taught you how to make patients feel intimidated and stupid about asking questions and having ACTUAL problems. But they do not teach that course any more, and we have

Sorry - posted accidently....

We have a PATIENT BILL OF RIGHTS.

Feel entitled, get some answers. You suffered through enough ridiculous health care in your life.

Go Girl, GO!!!

I'm going to have to vote no on the doctor. I had a bruise for about a year too (on my ankle). It finally started turning yellow (or maybe green first) and then went away. I'm pretty sure that webmd can give you better answers than most doctors, particularly those of the male variety.

It's not so much the bruise as the lingering pain and discomfort. This leads me to believe that SOMETHING is going on inside the general bruise area...
