A prenatal test is approved by the FDA which genetically screens for IQ potential of a fetus after five months of pregnancy(The test is guaranteed to be 100% accurate.) You find yourself the seeming lone survivor of a nuclear holocaust. Wandering the landscape for weeks, you finally stumble upon another person, who happens to be a member of the opposite sex. You realize that in all likelihood, you two may be the only survivors of the human race. You discuss the possibility of continuing the species with them, and find that they care for nothing but living out the rest of their lives in peace. Would you force yourself upon them in order to ensure mankind's continuation? View Answers

I'm submitting my answers as a comment 'cuz there wasn't enough room in the answer space: #1: Encase it in concrete and bury it. A virus can't survive very long without a host, so by the time anyone digs it up or breeches it, it'll be safe.
#2: Yes, and here's the reason: They assure I'll be alive and physically unscathed. Meaning they can't physically or sexually abuse me. I'm assuming they don't do anything illegal, what with me as a firsthand witness, so they couldn't hurt or kill anyone I care about, because they didn't agree to anything. Since they are "an obscenely sadistic group," this probably means they want to torture me psychologically. I know better than a lot of people this is not something to take lightly. But, knowing what I know about people, I know that physiological torture is nothing more than an extremely intense battle of wits and wills. Meaning I think I'd come out of it as a better person. (Those of you who've seen "The Game," think back to that.) What's more, it'd be an incredibly unique life experience, which would give me writing material for years to come. And 1,000,000,000 is basically a set-for-life amount of money, if you use it shrewdly and sparingly, meaning after college I could write full time, which would be worth almost anything to me.
#3: Oooh, now this one is a bit harder. It's the old "Matrix" question, isn't it? Which is better: A beautiful lie or an ugly truth? Every book and movie I've ever read or seen prompts me to throw my fist in the air and scream "I choose reality! I choose life!" But is that what I would say if my answer really determined what would happen? I suppose it all depends on how concrete you find reality. I'll say this much: If you choose the Orwellian thing, you can still fantasize in your head.
...By the way, technocratic dosen't necessarily mean bad.
#4: Well, according to the Laws Of Science Fiction, I'm guessing that although this test isn't mandatory, anyone who dosen't take it is shunned and ostracized for life, so I'd do it. But if it said my baby had a sub-100 IQ, I suppose I'd react just as if I learned it when he was twelve: I'd be upset, but I'd still do my best to see that he gets the best in life.
#5: No, for practical reasons as well as moral ones: The idea that the human race could be reintroduced from two people is a myth. Even if I was almost constantly pregnant, there would be NO genetic diversity. Meaning by the fifth or sixth generation, probably earlier, they'd be so inbred and have so many genetic disorders they'd all die out anyway. Besides, I'm not sure but I think it's impossible for a woman to rape a man. At least enough to make the man ejaculate.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

1) Concrete it, as already mentioned.
2) Considering that I'm already crazy, I'd probably accept. That is, as long as the money is tax-free.
3) The Orwellian society. Regardless to any impulses for the other.
4) This assumes that IQ really means something, and therefore any answer is useless. (You can find the arguement for IQ being false by contacting "logiclrd" on EFNet.) However, considering that my view is that knowledge is the key to all true victories, I'd probably try to convince the mother to abort. Yeah, I'm a cold sonofabitch.
5) I wouldn't exactly force myself upon her. I'd try convincing her. Meanwhile, I'd continue my search for other survivors, keeping the woman with me for company. That's the only force used, keeping the lady with me.

1: Sell it to the US government. They wouldn't use it, they would pay handsomely to keep it out of the hands of terrorists, and might be able to gain other knowledge from analyzing it.
2: They could kill people who were important to me, so, no.
3: My goal in life is to find happiness. I would choose a realistic happiness versus low chances of real happiness any day.
4: First, I'd find out what my wife says [assuming I'm married]. On a scale of -10 through 10, I'd be looking at it about -3, so while I'd be relieved at the idea of aborting, I think I would be able to go through with raising that child. There could also be many things that I am not considering, that my wife would point out.. (my girlfriend does that a lot.)
5: I would ask them to kill me, or help me kill myself. Living in a wasteland would be hell. Besides, there are very likely other people in the same situation. (How much of the globe can you traverse in a few weeks?)(Reply to this) (Thread) |

You have in your posession a vial of a disease which is highly contagious, for all purposes incurable, and ultimately fatal... as well as 10 doses of the vaccine. What do you do? - I would separate the disease material into 10 equal parts, then put all disease and vaccine into a locked freezer. You never know where you might find a use for such a thing, but it needs to be kept in a very safe place.
You are offered an "opportunity" - you can be the slave of an obscenely sadistic group of incredibly rich persons for the next five years, and forced to undertake any and all manner of horrific tasks at their behest, with the sole guarantee that you will emerge alive and (physically) unscathed... and granted $1,000,000,000 at the five year's end. Do you accept? - Yes. And I am likely to enjoy the slavery too.
Given the choice between being hooked up to a machine to perform menial labor your entire life, yet being fed mental impulses making you feel as if you were living your greatest fantasies... or eking out your life in a cold, cruel, evily technocratic Orwellian society... which would you choose? - The Orwellian society. I could never live without challenges.

Do you get the test done, and if so, what would you do if it was demonstrated that your child would have a sub-100 IQ? - Five months is too late into pregnancy to have an abortion. I believe abortions are often a good idea for babies detected as deformed at an earlier date, or for teenage pregnancies, or disadvantaged mothers and such. But by five months, what was cells is almost a baby. I would have the test, but only so I can prepare myself for if the child will be mentally disabled.

Would you force yourself upon them in order to ensure mankind's continuation? - No, after a nuclear holocaust, the world is likely to be pretty damn messed up, as could be our health. I would of course stay with the survivor if they wished it, and bring up the subject of babies some years later if I am sure we and the world are healthy. Besides, I will be the one who will have to bear and birth the child without medical assistance, so it's not something I'd take lightly.(Reply to this) (Thread) |
