This is a rant I had some time ago that I thought I might share with you.
Being emo is a very selfish state of mind and in my opinion there is almost no circumstances that justify it unless you have been brutally raped or something along those lines. Sorry, but your girlfriend/boyfriend breaking up with you is no excuse to act like a fucking depressed retard. Neither is your parents getting divorced, or someone at school calling you ugly. Get over it because it's part of life. If you really feel that you can't take that kind of treatment, do us all a favour and kill yourself now because it will only get harder. Life is tough, start getting used to it.

If you've watched it, you can see what it means to have a tough life.
These people can't afford fancy hair styles and colours. They can't afford new clothes or shoes. They can't afford anything like that, no school, water or food. Imagine being in their shoes. Don't look at them like they are any different to me and you, because they are not. Imagine being their age and having no Mother or Father, without any idea how to feed their brothers or sisters, let alone themselves.
Don't ever forget that on the other side, the grass is not greener. In fact there is no grass at all. On the other side of the fence, there is nothing but death, fear, pain and injustice.
So instead of feeling so sorry for yourselves, why don't you take a look at your own indulgent lifestyles and try to spare a thought for these children who are dropping like flies every day. Can you even imagine the amount of pain being suffered every second by people all around the world?
Right now as you read this, children are dying. In the time it takes for you to listen to 10 ticks of a clock, 3 children have died. 3 children with names, dreams, feelings and unique personalities. Children that cry the same as us, laugh the same as us, but can only dream of a life on the other side of the fence.
I guess we can only hope that they die peaceful and painless deaths, although the sad fact is, is that most of them will die alone, with nobody to hold them as they slip away. Most likely they will die dusty, tired and hungry, lying next to a sewer or in the corrugated iron shed that they called home.
So every time you feel sorry for yourselves, for whatever reason, just count to 10 and imagine you are the next in the line of children waiting to die.
Makes your life a lot more bearable doesn't it?

OK I agree, everybody has their own little self indulgent problems. I guess that's part of being human, right? I don't have a problem with that.
The thing is, I dislike emo and emos for a variety of reasons. Call me a bigot, but I don't believe in homosexuality. If find it dirty and disgusting to be quite honest with you. The reason I say that? Homosexual behavior is quite common in emos. As far as I can see, this is the only alternative subculture besides the homosexual subculture itself that has a high relative population of homosexuals. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate homosexuals, but I don't think it's something that should be socially acceptable, even if it's because of the major health risks associated with homosexual behavior.
Another reason, the self indulgence. I don't want to get long winded about this but I'm sure you can see where I'm coming from when I say that emos are more self indulgent than most. THey DO have a tendency to complain about things that most other people would take as facts of life. For some reason, emos don't seem to realise that they are not the only people that have issues in their lives. Basing an entire lifestyle around this is, to me, ridiculous and unacceptable.
Another thing, there are two very closely related, but completely different subcultures. These are PUNK and GOTH.
Both of these subcultures have inescapable links to each other but they are all very different frome each other. The only two things goth and emo have in common is that they are both offshoots to the original punk subculture. Punk started in the late 60's/early 70's. Goth started in the 70's, hardcore punk in the 80's, and Emotive hardcore around the same time. (Emo actually stands for emotive hardcore, not emotional as so many people believe.)
The emo music these days isn't anything REMOTELY like the old emocore. The modern day emo focusses on self pity, weakness and exacerbates thigns like angst and depression which are things that common in teeangers as they grow up. It's also worth noting that modern emo music exploits this as a weakness and uses it to make more money.
But I won't get too in depth and after a fair bit of study on my part I've found that the 3 subcultures can be easily generalised:
Punk: rebellion against societal norms
Goth: New Romanticsm
Emo: Whiny teenage brats
Whiny teenage brats? Where did I get that from? Let's start with Whiny. By "whiny" I mean complaining repetitively without justification. This is what emos tend to do. I see it ALL OVER THE PLACE, on MySpace, Bebo, at hardcore punk shows at my home town, it's everywhere and it's a fact that just can't be denied. "Emo kids" whine, and that's the end of it. Now for "teenage". 99.9% of emos are teenagers. You have to ask yourself WHY? Why are all emos teenagers? Well, teenagers are not mature adults. Most don't know what the real world is like and the moment anything goes wrong they feel that the universe has trained it's evil eye upon them and is directing all it's malevolence and hatred right onto their unfortunate heads. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The fact is, Emos are teenagers and teenagers are immature. I should know, I've only just turned 20 and I can remember exactly I immature I was. Can't say I was ever an emo though and I never wallowed in self pity the way emos do.
Now, brats. Where do emos get that money for those haircuts? Where do they buy those expensive clothes from, and how can they afford it? Where did that car come from? And the cell phone? And that iPod? And that laptop, high speed internet and warm bed? Most of it came from their parents. If ANYBODY has an excuse to be happy, it's teenagers and americans in general. What on EARTH have they got to moan about? Do they think they are living in poverty or something? To me, a brat is an immature child that will not accept that they are wrong, and will protest a reasonable argument almost the point of bigotry.

Looking "emo" doesn't define the person on the inside, everthing you have said is so shallow and narrow minded its unbelievable. This is going to be very long , but hey, I just read every single comment on this page (even though I don't quite remember how I got here), so you guys can at least read this one.
To Impavidus:
I quite agree on the point you're trying to get across, though the way it was said seemed more angry & spiteful than factual and educated. But you're right, any kid in North America that can afford all that fancy shit couldn't possibly have problems as bad as those kids on the other side of the world sticken by poverty and war. And the video was a nice touch.
HOWEVER...
"Read this you emo dicks" is hardly the title I would choose, as it makes it sound very stereotypical and cocky. But I guess there is no pleasing everyone on such a touchy subject.
To everyone who replied furiously in defense of emos:
I read every one of your guys' replies and NONE OF THEM helped your case AT ALL. In fact they simply proved Impavidus's point that people like you give the term "emo" a very bad name. I'd like to see just one of you come out of that damn computer screen with something intelligent to say about yourselves; and talk so people can actually hear you. You also make a good point. Not ALL "emos" cut, and not all of them are depressed all the time. Although if that applies to you, I believe the term is "scene" not "emo" if it's a label your looking for. See, I'm not emo at all; I don't cut, I dont wear makeup, I prefer metal and hardcore over emocore anyday, I wear slightly baggy clothes and trucker hats. However, I also have dark hair with long blond & red bangs that swoop to the side. And seeing this, many people ignore everything else and scream "EMO!" when I walk past. Of course being the exact opposite I reply with two middle fingers, because that's the only thing those arrogant pricks seem to understand; therefore I stand with you on the fact that people need to stop generalizing and try to see farther that right in front of them. But you could've said that without sounding like the rest of the haters on this page.
