    Valentine's Day Proposal

I sat in that cafe you'd never see
on the street where all the paupers
    sold insomniacs paper roses,
    and listened to recordings of
that actress who sounds like you.

    And you're a continent away,
    seeing nightfall prisons
    and sunrise bays,
views I can only outline in ink.
Maybe you were right, and you are my muse,
    the fury at my heels.
Either way, you know we'll never marry.
No matter how many times you ask,
    or I say yes.

It wasn't that kind of deal we made
in the empty nights. It wasn't
    that cheap a love.

And though I'm sat on a hissing bus now,
and you're a world away riding an open road,
    I am glad of that.
