I hate Sylvester Sim!
Ok actually the title is put there to facilitate searching for anti-syl websites for the anti-syl people, in case they are so bo liaoz to do that. Then they will chance upon my blog and will find that..on the contrary, I love sylvester sim! ahhhaah. then they can bang their heads on the computer keyboard while they read about how I gush over him. yeah!!!
hahaha. I have finally finished all my deadlines! and my dear sup has actually allowed me to analyse my data after exams! woo hoo!!
And guess what? After SS attempted to look like Ah jie, or maybe justin timberlake when he sang "Rock your body" in SI last week, this week, he is very probably going to sing ah jie's 安静!! so exciting right!!!! Everybody, say with me, its soooo exciting!!
yeah!! finally can hear syl sing chinese songs on stage, which is what he is used to. so confident that he will do a good job. ahh... I was reading xiaxue's blog the other day where she talked about how she like "mandopop", and how shes not afraid of admitting it.
Dun you know? people who like chinese songs are kind of discriminated against in singapore. ok lah, maybe discriminated is quite a strong word. but seriously, we are considered cheena people, who have low taste. Chinese songs are considered as inferior to english songs, those jazzy, r n b and whatever crap are supposed to be of a higher class.
i mean duh. Chinese songs also have different genres k. actually to correct xiaxue, they are not categorised as all mandopop. There are also rnb, rock or pop chinese songs. rnb chinese songs are prob sung mostly by david tao, then jay, and recently by a few cannot make it 偶像团体 like.. like.. hmm their names are so forgettable.. so nvm. oh Tension is pretty good for some of their rnb songs though. rock songs would be sung mainly by mayday, 信乐团 and the likes.
anyways, some people on SI forum have been saying that syl only appeal to 1) people who like 5566 and F4 2) people who are chinese educated 3) people who like canto-pop 4) screaming young teenage gals and that 5) chinese songs are of a lower std than english songs. all the world idols are much much much better than singapore idols, and that it will be an embarrassment to send our winner to compete on the international stage. 6) It will be an even greater embarrassement to send syl to world idols if he wins, because hes an ah beng. How can we send an ah beng to the international stage?
At this pt, I hope you are saying with me, " How ridiculous is that?"
The Singapore idol forum really brought to my attention the fact that some singaporeans( prob alot) are very critical, judgmental, immature, and worse still, unpatriotic.
I shall dispel arguments 1-6 one by one. They suck. ok thats not the end of the argument. haahah.
1) 5566 and F4 can't sing. Thats the fact lah really. so any 5566 and F4 fans pls back off, unless you are going to discuss with me the technical details of how they can sing. Syl in contast, can sing. He can handle his high notes and 转音 really well, and we shd all know that 转音 is not very easy to handle. If you do it badly, u can go out of tune, or sound like a wannabe. but never did he fail in doing it well. Some people has said dunno how many times in the forum that if you dun like his face, just close your eyes and listen to him sing. stop being judgmental and criticise his diction, and just feel the song, and u will realise that he really CAN sing.
2) This point is really quite absurd. In the first place,if you are saying syl can only appeal to the chinese educated, you are saying syl can only appeal to pple of my father's age. He's 60. There are NO chinese educated people who are in my generation, or rather after my dad's generation, cos LKY abolished the chinese schools. We are all English educated now, repeat after me, cos our medium of teaching is in ENGLISH. Gosh. some people are just so un-knowledgable. that pisses me off.
ok maybe you meant people who come from chinese-speaking families.Excuse me, whats wrong with that? At least I can speak both English and Mandarin, and type in both languages now, while you can't!! stupid bananas! The way people say it, its as if people who hail from chinese speaking families are of a lower status. At least we are still aware of our roots and proud of it. you?! you have no identity. nothing. And dun come and crap to me about how being a singaporean is of a different identity. Yesh we are singaporeans, our first language is english, but that doesn't give you an excuse not to know your mother tongue. you shd truly be ashamed.
oh and btw, SQ, a fellow sylvesterian, is from a English speaking family.
3) huh? I dunno cantonese and I dun particularly listen to it. I dunno where the hell that notion came from. Are you saying his voice is slightly husky therefore he sings like cantopop singers? But not all cantopop singers have husky voices? weird logic. in any case, whats wrong with cantopop? Another illogical argument which came from people who have no sense of their roots.
4) I am not a teenager anymore, sad to say. Neither are all my other undergrad friends or working friends who like him. So there! Stop being jealous of syl's huge fan base!
5)After hearing that comment that chinese songs are of a lower std than english songs, I went to the english mtv channel and heard a couple of songs. I haven been in touch with english songs much, except those famous one nowadays like "Reason" since my pri 6 days. I think I listened to Avril lavrigne ( dun even know if the name is spelt correctly). No impression. her voice doesn't impress me. then a couple more, even worse. you may say its just that time i tune in. but seriously, I dun feel much for eng songs. some are pretty nice, but nothing can tug to your heartstrings more than chinese songs.
Someone in the newspaper quotes, " If you can't speak the language that I grew up spouting in, there's always a part of me that you can't access"
Nice? It pretty much describes what I feel too. Chinese songs appeal to me more bcos I can identity with it, its part of my culture, my roots. The lyrics often talk about how you might feel in a relationship, be it love or friendship. Why do you think people are so excited abt the theme this week, " Asian pop"? Why do you think, not only Chinese, but Malays are excited to know what their idols will be singing in their mother tongue? Because they are songs we can truly identify with! so for all those who say the theme is a flop, and further show that we are not multi-racial, and segregated, back off. Being multi-racial doesn't mean we forget our own roots, that we are Chinese. Malay, Tamil or Eurasian.
And being a Singaporean should not mean that you shd be embarrassed to send our winner to the international stage. Excuse me?! Wheres ur sense of patriotism? not even a itsy teeny weeny bit? Hello?!! I am not ever patriotic per se, but I am feeling morally outraged by all these comments that it will be a thorough embarrasement. I have to admit,I haven heard the world idols sing. though i have heard clay aiken and ruben sing before.
The pt is, even if the other world idols are really great, that shdn't stop us from sending our winner there! Its all part of trying and gaining new exps. I mentioned in the SI forum that that is what is sportsmanship and cite the eg of Olympics, how we know we will definitely lose but still try anyway, but everybody so heated in the argument, dun seem to care. one even said, our swimmers weren't even in top form then, do you call that sportmanship? Duh! of course! there are alot of reasons why swimmers are not in top form, so stop blaming them, cos they at least tried.
6) people have been criticising that syl looks like an ah beng and his diction is bad. Amusingly, those who criticise his diction have gross grammatical errors so bad, its blinding. Some even spelt the genre " Big Band" as "Big Ben". I can't see how the person could have done that cos "a" and "e" are not exactly that near, but missing an "d"? Your english sucks.
I shdn't talk abt whether syl looks ah beng or is an ah beng. But the problem lies in the fact of why we are so prejudiced against them. Seriously, unless some of your family members or friends have been hurt or killed by ah bengs, i dun think you are justified in discriminating against them when they have done nothing against you. Just because you dun like how they look? but thats such a lame reason! That is sooo irrational too. And anyway whats wrong with sending an ah beng to the international stage? Can't you all see that singapore has so many ah bengs? Its just part of our culture! Why are we so ashamed of it? Can't we all face up to the fact that there are ah bengs ard? At least Taiwan acknowledged that they have 台客 ( in my opinion, its the taiwanese version of ah bengs) ard, and 我猜even got some of them who look quite good to go on their variety show yesterday. They are not afraid to show what sorts of people they have in their cty.
SI forum has let me understand how some of the generation younger than me are so cynical, cynical to the extent that I think if they dun wake up their idea soon, Singapore will fall. really. literally fall. with people with no sense of patriotism ard, how can we not? Unless these people are in the minority. And worse still, these cynical people are arguing against just as crazy immature little gals who support syl. Maybe cos they are young, they are very docile, and keep saying the same thing of how syl is gd, but never say why, and proceed to say this is just my opinion. hope you don't get offended.
Excuse me?! People are already criticising your idol so badly, and you still try to be polite and tell them not to get offended? Have the people who criticised syl ever care abt if YOU will get offended?! duh! time to buck up man gals, and be more assertive. If one speaks reason, the others can't rebutt you. bcos deep down they know u are the rational one. just like nobody rebutts me on the forum ( ok lah, except one) cos they totally have nothing to say.
I dunno how Singapore ministers getting youths to speak up more and inviting them to forums will help develop these youths to a higher intellectual level. Since at this pt of time, some MP is still trying to 敷衍我 with EXACTLY the same reasons that I told him I can't accept. Hello!!! I understand english k, dun try and rephrase things in another way to make it sound convincing. Because they don't. Its this lack of transparency that really sucks.
ahh! enough of airing my tots. hope u all dun get blind reading it! feel free to comment if you disagree with my views, even though you believe that I may beat u up for it. mwahahaha.

i find it interesting that you have the same views that i just happened to share with my wife on the SI phenomenon, i.e. it appeared the two camps differ on one main issue, the pop representative that singapore will have out of this contest. i am a malaysian man in my 50s (english and chinese educated but more inclined to british colonial values and western pop music in my youth) and married to a totally chinese educated woman who liked taiwanese pop songs (in her youth). i have enjoyed watching the SI show, and admire young artist like Sylvester Sim who tries despite considerable odds (in a predominantly upper middle-class tastes oriented society). i believe the courage and determination he shows (because he knows his special gift and potential worth in the pop world) is something that singapore will be proud of. if politics (esp. politically correctness) are not involved, Sylvester will be the champion. Hello! heh am suprised that so many found my blog thru sylvester sim. hmm.. anyway, I agree with you that it seems that Singapore is a "predominantly upper middle-class tastes oriented society". Cos not only do some of these upper middle class pple despise chinese songs, they also display prejudice against those not-as-highly-educated. Again Sylvester is from the normal(technical) stream, never even did the O-levels, while taufik graduated from Polytechnic. Some people are already slamming sylvester's english and saying how taufik is so educated blah blah. I deem it as rather sad and superficial that some people dun respect the lower class, or even, dun acknowledge their existence in Singapore. I would wanna see sly win the contest, truly because if we are talking abt Singapore idol, he is a pretty good representative of what kinds of people we have in Singapore. If people are deeming that only the upper middle class can win this contest, yeah, by all means, taufik, who sings more like an American will win. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread) |

Hi, i am the malaysian semi-retiree neighbour again. i am not involved in any socio-economic class struggle in case any one gets the wrong impression. my wife and I are happy, successful and contented professionals hailed from the so called "upper middle and elitist class". we both enjoy a large variety of music, literature, art and culture in different genres. abundant life is more than just one class or one pattern (too boring and narrow). we believe that by encouraging free and unhampered opporunities to anyone regardless of whatever socio-economic and cultural background he/she comes from, a star (with inherent talent and charisma) can be borned. the SI experience is significant in that within the short span of six months (?), stars can be made, pearls can be uncovered from hitherto unknown crowds in the street, strangers can become friends and supporters in the arena of the nation (and even the world). please convey our best wishes to Sylvester: "永远不要放弃你的梦想!continue to dream big dreams. just look at the rich and famous in this world--many have not been hampered by their humble background! we shall surely buy your first album. best wishes and warm regards from your Johor neighbours.
