    Religion....
    I don't really have much to talk about so I am gonna put something in here that I read and found to be very interesting...

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "I believe in tolerance. I believe in an accommodation of ideas. I do my best not to disrespect others beliefs, because I have no better proof to prove my beliefs than they do theirs. My beliefs are not set in stone. I keep an open mind. If, perchance, I come to an epiphany by which I begin to question the beliefs that I currently hold, then I will do as I have always done and consider what I know and what I have seen so that I may form new schemas by which to live my life.
    That being said, my basic problem with the majority of religions is the people that follow them. Religions started out as a way for the ancient folk to explain things that they could not otherwise explain. For instance, why does the sun rise and set? Or how did we get here? You know...those things.
    I guess around the time Judaism came around religion started to edge itself on over towards the area of social control. People started tossing in things like, if you disobey the rules we say...well, then you'll just have to rot in eternal hell. The problem with that is that a lot of different religions did it. And different religions tend to have different beliefs. Different beliefs lead to conflict, which in turn results in...The Crusades! (and of course, other such nonsensical slaughter). To this day, religion has proved to be one of the leading causes of conflict.
    At this point I feel the need to toss in a quote from my dad. Now I generally don't get along too well with him, but I gotta say he was pretty dead on with this one, and it definitely earned him a lot of respect points from my general direction. The quote goes like this: "It doesn't matter what you believe. All that matters is how you treat other people." Now I don't know about everyone else, but in my lifetime I've noticed that religion...it's not doing so well in the whole treating each other with respect category (recall the whole "war" thing).
    Which brings me to another thing. We were talking about this on the swim bus (remember?), and Christa seemed a wee bit baffled as to how I could be atheist, to not hold any religious beliefs at all, and still be a straight edge kid. I suppose some could find it a bit confusing...I mean...I am a heathen to you people, right? Yeah, you'd be surprised what kind of morals us barbarians can have.
    I don't have to believe that I will be punished by a god or be sent to heaven or hell to know the difference between right and wrong. It's like the quote from my dad. I don't care what someone else believes. I treat other people with respect because they deserve it. If someone else disrespects me, then I am less likely to respect them. It's simple. I don't smoke and I don't drink because I don't feel the need to. Modern religion is a social control. I don't need a control. I've got a pretty good handle on things as it is."
    Let us chew on that for awhile....
