Firstly, if you don't see me around much, it's because I don't currently have internet access at home.

Sort of related, for UK readers, what ISP do you use, have you ever had to deal with Customer Service and would you recommend it?

Finally, I've decided to move on from Blurty. I want a blog with side bars. I want something I can put on my own web space. Any recommendations for that? (I did think about hiring Vicki to sort it out for me, but it's a bit out of my price range, so I'll be going with whatever I can do for myself - and possibly bribing my husband to do graphics for me).

I really love wordpress. My blog is self-hosted, but wordpress.com has free blogs that have great functionality and look great.

We're on BT Internet, but I don't know about their Customer Service - simply because when we had any problems with speed or service, my brother took care of it, and sometimes I think it was solved by him fiddling with settings, and sometimes by him ringing them up. But as far as I know, we've not had problems with them.

I'm biased towards Blogger, because now I've figured out my two main gripes - 2 side columns (I Googled a tutorial to add one) and problems with inserting photos (solution - don't use Blogger's insert tool, upload to Photobucket instead and use the html code to paste in), I'm a happy camper. Only slight tweak I'd do is have a picture header bar, but that's down to me not having investigated how to do it. Everything else Blogger I've figured out myself by experimenting or Googling. My photoBlog's just how I want it (minus the photo header).

Go with WordPress. Absolutely, no doubt about it. I've worked with almost the full range of Blogging platforms out there, and WordPress is hands-down the best. It's easy to learn and use, but hugely full-featured. The support community is great, and there are massive amounts of add-ons. Self-hosted WordPress is my preference, but you could always go with a free wordpress.com account to get a feel for how it works first.

Plus, if you do self-hosted WordPress, there's a plugin for showing your Ravelry WIPs as progress bars in your blog sidebar. ;)

And do let me know if you need my help! It literally takes me five minutes to do a WordPress installation, and I love to help. :)

Thank you for this. I'd been looking at Wordpress. I've had a bit of a play at Wordpress.com, and was thinking of trying there for a bit, but then it occurred to me that I have webspace that I don't use, so I might as well self host.

Once I get internet back, I shall try and install it myself, but I may be asking for help if I get stuck (I've installed forum software before, so this can't be much worse, I'm sure).

You're welcome! If you've managed forum software before, then WordPress will be easy. :)

I'm with Sky Internet, and I've never had to deal with their Customer Services. The modem occasionally goes nuts, but otherwise I would recommend them.

I'm with Plusnet. The only time I've had to deal with their customer services was when I moved house, and they gave me confusing information, but the mix up was spotted quite quickly and dealt with well enough. And the people I spoke to were pleasant enough.

We're with Tiscali, and the service is somewhat frustrating, although I hear that the cheapest services like Talk Talk are even worse...

Your defection from Blurty is indefensible, especially as you were the person who got me on to it!

:P

I plan to host my own blog (as soon as I have time to work on it), but I think Wordpress is the way to go. Blogger has been buggy for me.
