What On Earth Am I Meant To Do
Probably not doing as much as I could, but hey. Here's what we've been up to so far while off work (our first proper bit of holiday since May).
Tuesday
Not a lot in the morning, bar buying a load of underwear (yes, boring) and lots of TV in the afternoons. We went to an Italian restaurant in Camberley in the evening. H had bruschetta with sardines (ugh) and lasagne al forno; I had funghi ripieni and vitello alla crema (schlorp).
Wednesday
Visited Mum to have a pair of trousers altered and chew the fat. In the afternoon, we took a load of stuff out of the loft and H put some additional boards down. He went to Bhangra night at an Indian restaurant in Wembley with some friends in the evening while I got Pished.
Thursday
H hurt his back today so no loft work, but I've spent a few hours logging CDs for my list and am now up to about 960 songs. Lots of TV to keep us entertained, though.
Made gumbo for Ver List in the evening. I went for the "classic" shrimp (OK, prawn in my case) and okra version with a few additions and substitutions, so the final mix involved onion, mushroom, peppers, chopped plum tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, tabasco and various herbs and spices; I was despairing of getting my roux to "medium" (you have to stir hot oil and flour unceasingly for ages), but it suddenly turned at the 20-minute mark just as the receeep described, so I was very happy. The recipe called for 2 quarts of water (!) but I did a rather reduced version involving 2 pints instead. Even so, the resulting mixture was enough to feed about six people. We know this because we ate the lot ourselves - three bowlfuls each, with rice. Am utterly stuffed. (H said on leaving for band that there was enough time before he got back for me to make another lot. Tee hee. *TICK*)
Speaking of Ver List, there are now eight things left to tick off (not counting those things I shall never eat, such as Phaal and bagna cauda) and they are: carp, pho, curried goat, whole insects, fugu, chitterlings or andouilette, baijiu and snake. Most of which are still very achievable, bar the fugu, which remains elusive.
The hibernatory instinct has hit us both hard and I am keeping my expectations of our achievements this week fairly low (H is sleeping for hours and hours), but we're doing just enough to keep from feeling we're getting nothing done. Which is good. And I'm seeing WDers this weekend. YAY!
