    Current music:You Don't See Me - Keane

All Moving At The Speed Of Light
I was sorting through some papers in my "nostalgia" box in the study, and found a load of email correspondence between H and me from back in 1994, shortly before we became an item. Dear lord. (No, I'm not posting samples, although the subject matter was usually music or clubbing.) My email handle was COSMIC AVATAR, even then (back when "avatar" was a relatively unknown word - unless one had knowledge of Hinduism and/or X-Men comics - lo-o-o-o-ong before it became used to describe profile pics and online personae and whatnot and became as common as muck). People kept confusing it with "aviator", natch. (As they did on the WD when I first joined.)

We used to write in ALL CAPS (before netiquette advised otherwise), although H switched to proper case before I did. And I sounded like I was fucking high on drugs. This is because I probably was. I was drinking circa seven cans of Diet Coke a day (and smoking about seven cigarettes, funnily enough) to cope with the unbelievable stress and long hours which comprised my first job at C&W. If anyone ever finds these emails after I'm gone, they're going to think I was a total nutter. Er, yeah. Think.

when i first started emailing and posting i always wrote like this...and very rarely used caps even though i didn't know it meant yelling...i still chat like this...to me it's how i think a conversation goes...but you know what?...it's actually kind of hard to post like this now...i keep having to correct myself when i try to correct myself.

Aww, I loved this entry! It's so sweet and sentimental -- but in a matter-of-fact rather than a schmaltzy way. I remember when I first discovered the online world and tried chatting with or emailing random people who struck my fancy, or trying to participate on boards/forums on which I had an interest concerning the established subject matter (c. 1996), and on initial contact they would by and large deride me for writing in complete, well-punctuated sentences instead of in "net-speak" (sp.). I tried to explain that it was just my nature as a student of language, but I don't correspond with any of those people now. You can imagine, then, how thrilled I was to find the BG/WD. :)

Oh, the dreaded all caps. You've learned well, young Avatar.
