    Current music:New Born - Muse

    (My CD Collection) Is Growing
Well, it had to happen eventually.

Now that I have most of the songs I own ripped/downloaded to iTunes, I have decided to put most of the CDs whence they came into storage in the loft to free up some space for DVDs. The trouble is, not all the songs on CD are ripped, but someday there is the chance that I might decide that I MUST HAVE a song I have hitherto ignored or passed over, and it's getting hard to keep track of what I have in general (I have a sneaky suspicion I already owned Sub Sub's Aint No Love (Ain't No Use) before buying the single this week, although I haven't found it yet.) So, I have to grasp the nettle and finally catalogue my CD collection, same way as the DVD one, on a lovely Excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately, the CD collection is rather larger than the DVD one. My DVD collection currently numbers 305. The number of songs on my iTunes general list alone is 2,157.

    I may be some time.

You're gonna need a bigger spreadsheet.

See, this is why I managed to pick up a CD databasing program about eight years ago (it's called Catraxx, if you're curious) just to try and keep track of most of everything. It was actually quite scary to discover that my CD collection has so far cost me about £3000...

I've already ripped my entire CD collection to my hard drive; once it was all bolted into one huge Winamp playlist it came out to around 7200 tracks, including the 700-odd random individual songs I've got from various places. Music geekery is hard work.

Yeah, that's the trouble. I don't want to rip everything (such as about 90% of the Now That's What I Call Music!, for starters) in order to save disk space - my hard drive is already at its limit and badly needs replacing, which I hope will happen very soon once H gets around to doing the necessary installations - but I do want to keep track of everything I have, just in case.

I brought it on myself - I should have done this years ago!

But you're coming back, right, Captain Cossie-Oates? I couldn't bear it if you took the great walk into the Excel unknown and didn't come back...
