Count Your Blessings
Purchased: one adult (ha!) standard entry for Collectormania London Saturday 28 Nov, one adult standard entry for Collectormania London Sunday 29 Nov, one Anthony Michael Hall photoshoot, one George Takei photoshoot and one John Barrowman photoshoot, to go with my previously-ordered Misha Collins photoshoot and Supernatural talk. That's a record number of photoshoots for a signing event for me. And they haven't stopped announcing guests yet! I really do hope there aren't too many more I end up wanting to meet.
Helen, petal, thanks for the offer of kippage space, but when photoshoots are involved I use a ridiculous amount of kit (make-up, toiletries, clothing, you name it), and I can't be arsed to lug a full-sized suitcase around London. Very kind of you to offer, though!
In other news: the Reporting & Development dept is now expected to log all activities on a database so that we can justify what we do with our day. Which is fair enough as we're pretty much the only dept which isn't monitored with KPIs and whatnot. I have to say that if one must do that kind of thing, the database one of my colleagues has created for the purpose is really rather clever and one of the best ways I can think of to get it done, having done similar and far more labour-intensive activity-logging in the past. Nifty!

You're gonna be bouncing around the photo shoots! No worries on the staying over thing - the offer's there if you need it, but whatever is most convenient for you is best! We can still meet up anyway :-) (Reply to this) (Thread) |

I can at least see the reasoning behind time/activity logging, IF it's done for the right reasons and handled properly. But the one I had to do a year ago was handled badly and got a LOT of people's backs up. And when someone asked if we even had to log toilet breaks (with the answer being yes), all hell broke loose, or close enough. Because it did feel too much like we weren't being trusted.
If it's to see which areas take up the most time and with an aim to getting you the resources/funding you need (or in my case as I work for 2 teams, seeing what percentage of my salary each team contributes), then OK. But if the employee feels like they're not trusted - that's not fair or productive.
Plus, as we talked about last weekend, it's impossible to get it completely accurate unless you only do a handful of tasks. I know I'd find it hard - I might start working on a spreadsheet to log names from a magazine, but then I'll be asked to book a room (few minutes), book a restaurant (10 minutes), back to the spreadsheet, then can I run to the PC clinic (30 minutes) and set up a meeting (10 minutes) and ring someone about X (5 minutes and then I get back to the original spreadsheet. if I've not kept working on it while on the phone. So how many minutes exactly DID I spend on that spreadsheet? Multitasking while on the phone would really screw my figures as I can't book time to 2 different tasks, but sometimes don't have the luxury of only doing one thing at a time!
And yes, the year ago time/activity reporting WAS OCD enough to require allocation in minutes.
