That was both less & more expensive than expected.
I spent two and a half hours at the DMV & am now the proud owner of a temporary license until the replacement comes in the mail. Probably 20 minutes of that time was spent circling the far-too-small parking lot in search of a car leaving a slot open before giving up & parking on a side street. I envied the people who had appointments as they got to bypass a long line at the doorway, but since I overheard someone saying that the appointments are booked up into November, there was no way I'd have been able to get an appointment for today.

The replacement fee was only 22 dollars (the website indicated it would be 28). So that was good. When I got to the side street where my car was, I immediately noticed mine was the only car there (there had been several when I parked at 8:15), and it had a white envelope on the windshield. Turns out it was street cleaning day for that street & I have a fine of 44 dollars to pay. Doh!

Ouch! Sorry to hear of the fine. Is there any way you can fight it? As a first time offender kind of thing? At least your dup (as well call them at our DMV - pronounced "dupe") was only $22. Ours are $30. But then again, you get the dup right away instead of having to wait. I still think our DMV sucks compared to other states though.

I don't think there's anyway to fight it - at least I've already written a check & mailed it, so it's too late for me ;-). While I hated the long line & the folks working didn't seem terribly happy to be there, other than the pitiful parking, I didn't find the DMR too onerous. The wait was long, but at least they had it set up so you could sit down & they had monitors showing the next number called & the desk to go to, so it wasn't too bad.

And later I heard why some of the folks might have been unhappy (and why the wait might have been longer than normal). Apparently the governator hasn't signed the new contract for the DMV employees, so their union decided they should go by the old contract, which had Columbus day off. The new, unsigned contract has them working on Columbus day. So Monday, most of the workers didn't show up, & most of the DMVs had to close, which really pissed off people who had appointments for that day (who didn't receive any warning). So Tuesday had a lot of pent up demand (since the DMVs have been closed every Friday this month as well) & a lot of workers who probably came in & got promptly chewed out/dinged by management for taking the previous day off.
