Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

    Current mood: dorky

    Posture.
When I was seventeen, some guy I knew at school came up to me and said, "I can always spot you, even from across campus because you walk like this."

Then he hunched his shoulders way forward and let his arms hang loose. He looked ridiculous.

Since then, I've always believed that I have bad posture. I make an effort sometimes, but I just KNOW that people are laughing at me amongst themselves when I walk past.

But last week at the clinic, one of the participants came in and said, "Girl, you have such perfect posture! I'm so jealous."

    I said, "What? No, I don't!"

She said, "Yes, you do! Every time I come in, you're carrying yourself so well. Seeing you always reminds me to pull my shoulders back and stop slouching."

Now I'm all confused and I don't know how to think of myself! Because part of me thinks she had to have been messing with me. I don't have perfect posture! I look stupid when I walk! Brandon in high school demonstrated*!

I asked Dwayne and Joyce for confirmation of whether I have good posture. They both said, "Yeah, you have pretty good posture."

Which... I don't know what that means! It is true? Or did they say that because they don't want to hurt my feelings, but they really think my posture isn't that great at all?

    Oh, dear.

*Dwayne now tells me that that it was probably my heavy backpack that made me walk like that; I was overcompensating to ease back pain. He says I don't walk that in ordinary circumstances. It's just a heavy backpack thing!

From the sounds of things, you're fine, Ma'am.

I too had a comment on my bad posture when I was 16 or 17, and have been self-conscious about it since. Some pilates fixed me right up, though. Now I KNOW how to do good posture. Not that I do it all the time, mind, but I am aware at least.

I have never noticed you having bad posture, though. I'll tell you next week! Honest unvarnished helpful friend style. If you want.

Oh, that will be lovely! Now I have to forget we ever had this exchange or I'll focus on my posture that day and give you a false impression.

There you go. Sounds like you have nothing to worry about.

I've been trying to change my posture for the last year or so. Ever since I shrunk my butt, I've noticed it's easier to tip my hips back instead of forward and make my spine straighter. But I think I only do it when I'm thinking about it, and I have no way of knowing! I should ask someone to watch me...

OMG! I had a friend at grad school (so very recent) who would sit and talk with me and suddenly kinda sit up and back and straighten while looking at me... so I'd do the same. And I've been convinced that she was trying to let me know that I slouch and look like a slob. But you know, in a nicer way.

So I've been trying for the last few years to have better posture. I want someone to volunteer the info that I do. Because, like you, I feel that if I ask I will not get an accurate read on the situation.

(Side note, I DO know that I have crazy good organization skills.. in fact, I'm going to go post on it right now in your honor.)
