    Wonder Years.
Yahoo just told me that "Winnie Cooper" got married.

Now, all I want to do is watch THE WONDER YEARS on DVD. But I can't. Because it isn't on DVD. And may never be. And none of the channels are showing reruns either.

There's always BitTorrent. It's available -- http://torrentz.com/search?q=the+wonder+years . There's the initial time investment of figuring out the whole torrent thing, but then once done, you'd have it and could burn it on DVD and keep it forever, music rights be damned!

p.s. Did you know that little Winnie also writes books about math?

Those math books are really good, by the way!

I was just looking at them to see if I might like them. :-)

So, if I burned it on DVD, I wouldn't have to watch it on the computer? [/clueless]

Right! (And I'm with you; watching on the PC sucks.) Depending on your DVD player, you might not even need to do any fancy DVD encoding -- many players can just play regular AVI files directly.

Do you have any videos on your computer with a .avi extension? If you do, and you have a blank CD or DVD handy, burn that file to a disc (I would use DVD if possible; I think it's more likely to work). Nothing fancy, just a regular data disc, the same way you'd burn, say, some pictures and Word docs for backup or whatever.

Then stick it in your DVD player and see if it works. (Most likely, you'd get a plain menu that would show the file name, you'd select that file and try to play it, and hopefully it would play.)

I would not mind having The Wonder Years myself... if your player can play the AVI files, then maybe I could download it and if you send me a few blank DVDs I could burn them for you.

Oh, that would be awesome! :-)

But... I did a search on my computer for all files with .avi in the file name. The results indicate that no such file exists. Should I be trying something else? (Yes, yes. Clueless.)

Then, I pulled out DVDs and CDRs I've received from others (QAF from Valerie, VM from Cassy, ALIAS from Christine - which might be DX or DM if such a thing exists) to see if they'd play on my DVD player. They do, with the exception of the QAF.

This still doesn't tell me if my DVD player plays AVI files. But it does tell me that our new DVD player can do more than our PlayStation 2 that we used to use.

*sigh*

No, I can't think of any other way; you probably just don't have any. I was afraid of that. ;-) You could try to search the web for some random file to download and test with, or I could email you a small one, but I have another idea:

Put the discs in your computer, and open the folder (so you can see the list of files that are on the disc). If you can't tell what file type they are, go to Tools > Folder Options > View > UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Hopefully some of them will be AVI -- if there are AVIs on a disc that your DVD player plays, then yay! If there are AVIs on the QAF disc that your DVD player cannot play, then boo!

Ooh. Fun trick. That UNcheck changed everything. ;-)

And... the ALIAS DVD-R has AVIs!

So, it's a Yay!

Yay!

I'll look for a good torrent tonight and start downloading, and get an idea of how many discs it'll take...

Actually, now that I think about it, you might not need to send me discs -- I think I may have a few that I, er, "borrowed" from work.

Thanks so much, Jamie! Just let me know what you need.

Eeeek! THE WONDER YEARS! I've not watched this show since, well, it ended.
