ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1976)
Authority Vs. Individualism.
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest is more than the story of one Inmate against a Nurse. It is about what it means to be "free". Randle P. MacMurphy, a free-spirited con with lightning in his veins and glib on his tongue, fakes insanity and moves in with what he calls the "nuts." Immediately, his contagious sense of disorder runs up against numbing routine. MacMurphy takes it upon himself to "liven things up." He has no idea the dangerous game he is becoming involved with.
What does it mean to be "crazy"? What does it mean to be "sane"? Mac is the rebellious inmate of a psychiatric hospital who fights back against the authorities' cold attitudes of institutional superiority, as personified by Nurse Ratched. It's the classic antiestablishment tale of one man asserting his individuality in the face of a repressive, conformist system--and it works on every level. Unlike a lot of films pitched at the "youth culture" of the 1970s, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest really hasn't dated a bit, because the qualities of human nature that Forman captures--playfulness, courage, inspiration, pride, stubbornness--are universal and timeless.
What scenes stood out in your mind? What characters? How did the film make you feel? What were the bigger metaphors of the film? Who wins at the end? Which "system" is victorious? Why?

In the dictionary crazy is defined as “very strange or not very sensible; mentally ill”. In the dictionary sane is defined as “able to think in a normal and reasonable way. I think that crazy is what a community/society deems as unnormal behavior or behavior that they can not explain. Sane is the term use to describe for reasonable behavior of behavior that is expected of a normal person. Each person has their own definition of crazy and sane because each individual has different opinions but their definition are in a way similar because their idea of crazy and sane has been influence by those that surround them. Overall I thought that the movie was moderate it was good until the end. It was obvious that MacMurphy wasn’t crazy seen when he said “68 days” because he didn’t want to work in jail and thought that he could finish the rest of his sentences in a mental institution doing nothing and then he would be free. Only things didn’t turn out as he thought it would and he became a “committed” meaning the state now has control over him and decided if he is to be released or not. I liked how in the beginning it showed the landscape and played the Native America music in the background and how at the end they did the same thing, only with chief running away. This was a sort of foreshadowing of Chief’s escape and freedom because Chief was a Native American and it was playing Native American song. Chief was the one that “flew the cuckoo’s nest”. So chief wins because unlike MacMurphy he kept quiet and made himself somewhat invisible by pretending to be “death and dumb (mute)”, so that they wouldn’t suspect him. And he slowly forms a plan and then runs away after careful calculation. “Slow and steady wins the race”. MacMurphy is like the rabbit, too clever for his own good. He’s obvious and acts quickly and impulsively. He forms all these plans to escape and he could’ve escape, but he always ends up stopping himself. Like when he could’ve left the night when he got everyone drunk, but he wanted to help Billy and then he fell asleep. And the time where he could’ve escape the next morning, but then Billy suicides and he just couldn’t bring himself to leave and his last chance to escape was after Nurse Ratched closes the room’s door, but he decided to choke her instead. So he lost and became a vegetable after the frontal lobotomy. He can’t escape anymore and find his freedom on his own. So chief (that was sad that he had to kill his friend) kills him because he knew that Mac Murphy wouldn’t want to be like that and freed him from his pains. Chief took with him MacMurphy’s spirit and escaped because they had both promised to leave with escape together. It was as if Chief was using MacMurphy’s 1st method of escape to show that MacMurphy helped him escape. Beside MacMurphy, Chief was seemed to be the only sane one.

I think that this movie was created to show the cruelty of the mental institution as well. I agree with you about how you said that this movie hasn’t dated a bit because of the modern concepts and human nature. The scenes that stood out most in my mind were the one where they went fishing and the one where they got drunk. Because it showed true happiness, fun and full participation. Everyone was enjoying and being themselves. And not silenced or suppressed by Nurse Ratched. The basketball scene in which Chief is playing basketball stood out in my mind because you see Chief’s gradually nature, how he started to play by standing, then walking and then running. The scene of Billy’s suicide (that poor boy) also stood out in my mind. This shows that MacMurphy has given them confidence, seen when Billy stood up to Nurse Ratched after having sex with Candy and didn’t stutter as much, he barely stuttered. But then Nurse Ratched knew of Billy’s weakness and used it to her advantage. This is the only bloody death scene in the movie. Most of the guys are voluntary and you see that they stay in the institution because Nurse Ratched has control over them because she knows their weaknesses and makes them dependent on her. She is very controlling and likes to abusive her power and is manipulative. Seen when she requested that MacMurphy stay at the mental institution so that they can help him, when she really wants to have control of him. And the scene where MacMurphy tried to watch the baseball championship and tried to vote for it, but she found a way to beat even though he had majority. She can’t stand that MacMurphy has a mind of his own and is trying to influence the others. She wants to make him dependent and afraid of her. He is a challenge that she will defeat. The character that stood out the most in my mind was Cheswick. He’s like an oxymoron. He’s the scared little guy who wants to be on everybody’s side. But then you see that he could be strong as well when he stood up to Nurse Ratched and demand for his cigarettes from her and has an outburst when she would not give it to him. Although Chief wins, Nurse Ratched’s system is victorious because she has the power and has installed fear in everyone. And those who openly object or try to object will be eliminated. In a way she has strength in number with the backing of the institution board and the state. Movies like these make you question your government and everyone’s opinions and yours as well because you realize that the government isn’t as wonderful and trustworthy as it seems and that the opinions you and everyone have might not even be yours because it was influence by those that surrounded you. leibdawg, i won't be able to make it to class tomorrow because i will be getting ready for prom!.. just thought i'd let you know.
i have seen this film before, & i absolutely loved it! jack nicholson plays the perfect role in this film!.. anyways, according to dictionary.com, "crazy" means "mentally deranged; demented; insane." "sane" means, "free from mental derangement; having a sound, healthy mind." i think "crazy" means "out of the norm." (or so that's how society defines "crazy.") what is not normal; what is abnormal. what can't be explained. i think "sane" means thee explainable. adding to that, sane can also mean what is "normal" to society.
for example, reactions. let's say that one has won the lotto. what people expect to see is a person jumping for joy, smiling, screaming, etc. that can be considered "normal." on the other hand, what can be considered "crazy" or what people DON'T expect is a reaction that is the opposite of that. if this person goes around punching people, then thats when people would say, "that person is crazy!" i think it all depends on the person, and how they react to certain things. or how they are. what is considered normal to one person can be considered crazy to another.
the scene that stood out to me was after randle became a vegatable, the native american guy suffocated him to put him out of his misery. the character that stood out the most was randle. he was something else. his decisions, actions, everything he did was "different." it would have been hard for me to fake an "insanity." i don't know how he did it. he had to act a certain way, and if he were to act a different way accidently, or if something were to slip, then his secret would be revealed. i honestly wouldnt've been able to keep myself together. In my opinion, to be crazy is to have a personality that`s out of the ordinary. Eccentric, bubbly, hyper, daredevil, & moody are some of the ones i thought of. And to be sane is the opposite of that. Not out of the ordinary, someone who`s personality is just like everyone else, not psychotic. I have seen this movie before and i still like it. Although it is kind of slow in the beginning, the rest of the movie is phenomenal. I especially love the conflict between all the patients and Nurse Ratched. MacMurphy takes it to the next level and pushes her buttons, as if he wants her to snap. She does a very good job of keeping her cool which sometimes makes them back down. The scene where one of the patients [his name escapes me] is yelling at her for his cigarettes is hilarious. He tends to be the one that goes along with whoever and in this scene he tries to stand up for himself like MacMurphy is. It kinda backfires on him though, because Nurse Ratched has them under her total control and can make them do whatever she pleases.
One of the scenes that stood out to me was in the end when Nurse Ratched comes back to find the hospital a wreck and Billy comes out and tries to explain to her. He comes out and he doesn`t stutter like he used to. He seems confident in what he did and isn`t ashamed. That is, until she mentions his mother then his stuttering comes back. The characters that i remember the most are, obviously, MacMurphy, but also Martini, Billy, and the one who asked for his cigarettes [still can`t remember his name =P]. This film made me mad at Nurse Ratched and also anybody who puts down people as part of their "job." It does nothing for them and never lets the person gain a sense of self-worth or confidence. It also made me angry at anybody who has authority over any person or group of people. This authority is only going to cause them to try and rebel, which may or may not make matters worse.
I haven`t quite grasped the bigger metaphors of the movie. =/ I think MacMurphy and Chief won at the end. Although MacMurphy did get the frontal lobotomy and he got killed by Chief, he didn`t suffer much. He got to be "set free" by Chief in the end. Chief won because he made good on his promise with Mac and left the institution "with" him in the end. I still think the institution is victorious. Is has gotten all the patients, committed or otherwise, to submit full control to them.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

I think being "crazy" means that one must act a certain way, a way that is not accepted in our society. A "crazy" person may be someone who overanalyzes things, one who worries too much or even one that is too afraid to take chances making one extremely nervous around others. "Crazy" can mean anything depending where you live and what is the "right" attitude for that community. To be "sane" is whatever is accepted, whether is be laid back and "chill" to working a 9-5 job and then going out to a club with friends at 10pm. The definitions of both "crazy" and "sane" are defined by society, and can be constantly changed.
The scenes that stood out to me the most was of Murphy and Chief. The first scene that stood out was when Murphy was able to get Chief to raise his hand to vote to watch the World Series. I think it's incredible that Murphy is the only one that is able to communicate with Chief and they have this special connection between themselves from the very beginning. I think Murphy is the one that gets Chief to feel comfortable and be himself like in the basketball scene. Murphy taught Chief how to play. At first Chief was extremely stiff, but after playing a while, he started to run up and down the court and he was having fun. After getting sent to another floor, Chief finally spoke to Murphy and I think this would have never happened to any of the other people in the institute.
I didn't like the film because of the electro-shock therapy used. That doesn't solve any problems and I think they should have never used that to "treat" patients. Chief wins at the end, even though it seemed that Murphy would. Chief was quiet the whole time, making people believe he was mute. This came to his advantage. I think the system of individualism is more victorious because we ourselves make our own choices and act on it. No matter how much authority tried to keep Murphy there, or try to control him, he was still able to cause the havoc he wanted and nothing was able to stop him until the very end, when he had to go through treatments and when Chief believed that he needed to kill him, because Chief knew Murphy would have never wanted to live his life that way.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

Crazy is defined as being affected with madness or insanity. Acting crazy, can be thought of being out of the norm and not fitting into what is “right”. People can be considered crazy in different ways due to the fact that everyone’s perspective of normal is different. In the case of the MacMurphy he fakes being “crazy” in order to escape jail sentence. He places himself in the situation where he’s forced to go over the edge in order to risk getting caught. For me sane would be considered as having reason and knowing what is right and wrong. Being “sane” is having instinct and not knowing when to control your emotions. MacMurphy was sane because, he was able to manipulate and contort his actions and emotions to pass as an “insane” person. Sanity means becoming accepted and fitting in, which we all know isn’t always the correct way to be.
The scene that stood out in my mind where probably when MacMurphy invites the prostitutes into the ward, which angers Ratched. It was great to see MacMurphy strangle her Ratched, because you hate her throughout the film, and which something bad would happen to her.
Chief is by far my favorite character, not only because he has to power to escape but because of the fascination he brings to the film. He chooses to remain mute and is not willing to speak, which could have possible relieved him from the institution, but instead he stays quiet.
This was my third time watching the film, the first time I watched it I was angered when they lobotomized MacMurphy. This being my third time I was able to pay more attention to the metaphors and the message the film was giving. That being that the BIGGER person can oppress those who are less superior, but with enough force the small people can overcome the big. No one really wins at the end, because the main character dies, yet the villain remains powerless. The government seems victorious at the end, because everyone stays at the ward, the only one that escapes is chief.

I really liked this movie. This movie was funny, and sad. Towards the end of the movie I was wondering how MacMurphy would leave the mental asylum. The characters in this movie were was very funny and each character had their own problem. My favorite character in this movie was the Chief because he is so freaken tall. I did not like the electroshock therapy that they used on MacMurphy because that seemed very painful. I felt sad when Billy had killed himself. I was surprised that Murphy would fake his insanity so he would not go to jail. I think that being in the mental asylum is as worse as being in a prison.
I liked Murphy’s character because he made the other people in the asylum feel happy. He gave the people in the mental asylum the time of their life. They felt happy and free when they went fishing. There was no one to stop them, hit them, shock them, or give them medicines. I hated the nurse because she is a very mean. She just had a bad attitude, and she was very stubborn. She is a don’t give a damn person who didn’t care about what the people wanted. I blame Billy’s death on her because she was acting like a bitch. My other favorite character is Chief. He is the smartest guy from all those people that were in the mental asylum. I was stunned when I found out that he was not deaf and he could talk. I could not believe that no one knew that he could speak. I can not last five minutes without talking and he hasn’t talked since he went there. A person would need a lot of patience to do that which not a lot of people have.
In the dictionary, crazy means being out of the ordinary or mentally disordered. Sane means wise. At the end of the movie I think Murphy and the Chief won because they both wanted to get out of the mental asylum and they both tried. Even though Murphy didn’t make it out alive he was still free in a way. He didn’t have to be worried about going to jail or living in the mental asylum for the rest of his life. Chief was the lucky one because his patience has set him free from the mental asylum. I suppose he was waiting for the right time to get out. (Reply to this) (Thread) |

To be crazy means that you are in danger of hurting others or hurting youself or most importantly that act different from what is considered normal. To be sane means that you act like the majority of the people in the world act. Technically if you are different from most of the population you will be considered crazy. Over time society has set up rules dictating what is normal or sane and anybody that doesn't follow those rules will be considered a crazy person or someone who isn't functioning right. One scene that stood out in my mind was the one where MacMurphy was shown receiving electro shock therapy. That seemed like really extreme punishment for someone that isn't supposed to be held accountable for his actions. What was even more shocking was that the man that wanted his cigarettes also received this punishment. MacMurphy and Chief physically fought with the guards but the cigarette man just threw a tantrum and yet he still received a really harsh punishment when all he needed was a sedative. Another scene that stood out in my mind was the one where MacMurphy found out that half of the people in the ward were actually there voluntarily. That was really surprising because to me it seemed like all of those men could have lived their lifes in the outside. That scene really helped to show how dependent they had become on Nurse Ratched. Nurse Ratched has made them believe that they can't survive on the outside by themselves without her help. Out of the characters the one that stood out the most for me was Chief. He wasn't one of the voluntary men so he must have done something to get his family to commit him. His desicion to appear deaf and mute was the reason that he continued to stay locked up, he must have known that and yet he still stayed. That makes me think that Chief had nothing to live for on the outside until MacMurpy came. He also showed he had a tremondous amount of courage when he killed MacMurphy.
Everytime I saw Nurse Ratched's face whenever she got her way I became angry. She never loses her temper, always staying calm but if you look at her face you can see her constant need to stay in control. I was also angry with all of the men that were in there voluntarily, all of them had been brain washed into believing they were incapble of living on their own. They all seemd weak minded. Even MacMurphy couldn't believe how they were always complaning about how they were treated but they never left when they were completely free to. In the war between MacMurphy and Nurse Ratched I think that MacMurphy ends up winning. At first it appears that Nurse Ratched has won when MacMurphy gets his lobotomy but in the end Chief turns the tables. By killing MacMurphy Chief helped him find a way to escape, taking away Nurse Ratched's opportunity to gloat. Then when Chief himself escaped he proved that Nurse Ratched didn't have complete control over everybody like she thought she did.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

Crazy; a very odd word. Crazy, as defined by me, is someone/something that is abnormal (normal being defined by a community) or unaccepted. It is something that everyone deems odd. If a group of people says that jumping off a building is abnormal, and one person does it, he/she is considered crazy. Sane is the exact opposite. Sane is someone who is free from mental derangement (mental derangement meaning crazy). So if sane means free from being crazy, and crazy means something that is what the crowd doesn't agree with, doesn't that mean we (the sane people) are just going with the flow; the exact thing we try to separate ourselves from?
The scene that stood out the most for me was when Randy found out that over half of the inhabitants of the hospital were voluntary. The reason this pokes at my eyes is that it's a major turning point. You realize that even though they seem 'crazy', they can leave whenever they feel like it. It’s sort of a shock because you think you know for a fact that all the people at this hospital are insane; that they really need help. But in reality, they're normal. It just goes to show how badly people judge others. The one character that stood out was Christopher Lloyd's character, mainly because he shouted so much. It was a very comedic roll and I applaud his wonderful acting. The film was a bit depressing. Aside from the obvious fact that it was a comedy, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest ended with a terrible loss; a loss that no one really expects. In a way, you're happy Chief kills Randy, but you're also questioning the motive. It’s actually a pretty sweet thing to do; seeing a friend in a vegetable state and putting him out of his misery. As the movie progresses, Randy’s influence on the institution grows. When he enters the ward, he has nothing but the satisfaction of escaping jail. Towards the end, he has caused the workers to shock his brain into a state of vegetation. In a sense, he won the battle. He was so wild and crazy that he left them with no choice but to fry his brain. He was also able to break Chief and make him reconsider his escape.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

Crazy meaning mad; a multitude of meanings all of which are associated with unusual actions. You can describe macmurphys character as crazy because he went through so many twists and turns in order to survive with the so called “nuts”. Sane meaning that a person is mentally healthy and is able to make rational decisions based on reasonable or rational thinking, can also be used to describe macmurphys character.
The scene which caught my attention was when macmurphy is being wheeled into the recreation room once recovered from the surgery. The camera work is great in this scene, because as the chief eagerly awaits macmurphys arrival the camera is shooting the scene at eye level with the chief , meaning that the chief was expecting to see the same old macmurphy. Yet to his dismay the camera has to quickly shift towards the ground to see macmurphy in a wheel chair as a vegetable. The technique represents the actions of the chief as the camera continues at his eye level and follows as the chief is hanging his head in disappointment in order to get a closer look at macmurphy.
Macmurphys character was the one to make me feel sorrow. The movie overall was depressing, because as your rooting for macmurphy to escape through the movie, the end makes you realize how much power a meaningless institution can have against a free spirited innocent man. Its unjust to see the auditory figures win an unfair battle.

I really enjoy this movie. I think it did a great job portraying what "sane" and "crazy" by using the emotions, actions, and feelings distinguish the characters in the movie. Crazy is when a person is unable to think like every other human. The term sane is when a person does the same actions and show the same emotions. I really like how authority portrayed sane and individualism portrays crazy. In the end of the movie, we all see that authority controls everyone and is the winner. It shows how society is very manipulative and also very sad because humans are pretty much like robots who all do the same thing in order to stay on and used.
The scene that most stood out in my mind where was Ms.Ratchet had Mc Murphy go to electroshock. Its unbelievable how the most sane one in the movie, is changed to become "crazy" because he stood up for individuality. Ms. Ratchet [who portrayed authority] was scared to accept the fact that "crazy" people are just as normal and sane like the "sane". The only way the chief helped McMurphy escape from th institute was by killing him. Besides McMurphy, hte Chief was also sane but he didn't take action or stood up for it. He knew it was pointless trying to show that sane and crazy are the same thing.
This movie really made me feel really sad and controlled. It's astonishing how people judge each other and do what they are told to just for conformity. This helped me think more about how society and how sad it is. Authority wins again in the movie and that is how society remains.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

In the beginning of the movie I thought the movie was ok and short of funny, but at the end of the movie I changed my mind. The movie ending was “messed up,” and uncalled for. Overall the movie wasn’t that great. One scene that stood out to me is when the Indian guy, “Chief” said “thank you,” when MacMurphy offer him gum. It turns out that the Indian guy wasn’t deaf or mute. Chief could talk and listen but pretended to be disabled to everyone (except MacMurphy) through out his entire stay at the mental institute. The scene stood out to me because the Chief kept his secret on a “down-low” for a long time until he meant MacMurphy. I wonder why he talked to MacMurphy and not anyone else. What was so special about MacMurphy that Chief decided to talk to him?
Nurse Ratched stood out to me the most because she’s different from all the other nurses in movies. Nurse Ratched is a mean, vicious, white-skinned lady that has no feeling for human beings. She likes to be in charge of everyone. Nurse Ratched got people to listen to her by threatening them. Tours the end of the movie Nurse Ratched felt that she did not have enough power toward the guy that “screwed” that one lady. So, she threaten that guy that she’ll tell his mom, which resulted in a death scene.
The end of the movie made me feel unhappy. I wasn’t stratified with the result. I think that the ending should be more exciting and happy, with a good ending. In my opinion I think that MacMurphy wins at the end. The institute gave up on him and decided to make him a “vegetable.” They couldn’t do anything that can scar him for a very long time so they decided to take out his front brain. Without the feeling and knowledge MacMurphy is a total different person. It just doesn’t count as a win for the institute.

for me crazy means being able to do something that will get someone in serious trouble.not mentally disabled. mentally disable is more of like not functioning like a normal human being. the scenes that stood out in my mind was when MacMurphy escaped from Ward(?) institute and took the other guys fishing. the character that stood out for me was that one guy that volunteer.whats the point?i mean i would get help from other places not there. the film made me feel like normal people are so ignorant towards mentally challenges. i mean they have their own definition of crazy and in the movie i felt like their only job is to look after them and give them "medicine." they dont give them any fun or any respect. in the end authority wins. and individual cannt win over authority.well the way i see it. What it means to be crazy is to be total lost in the world and have no idea what going, and what kind of situation your in and aslo crazy people don't know there crazy. To be sane , you are aware of your surrounding and also that your mind is active and full working. What scene stood out was when Mac enters the koo kooo house and starts to laugh and is filled with you when the hand cuffs were taken off. Another scene is when they had there daily talk, and it was about the "smart guy" talking about him suspecting hes wife cheating on him.
One of the scene that got to me the most was the electric shot therpy, a lot of people were hurt cause of that and caused them to go even more crazy after each treatment. Characters that stood out from the film was the tall Indian dude who would never talk, i have never expected to come out in the film as a roar. Another guys is the person who kept wanting to be on someones side because he just wanted to help. Hes problem was that hes mind didnt speak for him , but someone else did and he just wanted to follow who he thought was the superior.
Who i think wins in the movie is the System because for some reason you come in sane, and then you become insane just living there. The system that was victorious is the program that the hospital used because for some reason they seem to just keep winning. Everything went there way, people did want they wanted them to do. the movie was quite interesting. i liked it a lot. there is no clear answer to the question "what does it mean to be "crazy"? im taking this psychology class and well if you would to ask me who do i think is crazy i would say everyone because everyone has the characteristic of being so called "crazy" at times. like not being able to answer the "crazy" question. there is no way to define "sane".
this film reminded me of the research paper my psychology prof made me do. heres the website: [ http://www.lahc.edu/reigadas/ROSENHAN-BEINGSANE.pdf ] the way "sane" psuedopatients were admitted to mental institutions. you get the tendency to do what is around you and you play the role.
the scene that stuck out in my mind was the shock therapy scene it also reminded me of my psychology class the different ways they would try to "cure" the illnesses. the torture that they would perform. the other scene that stood out in my mind was when murphy started choking the nurse at the end when billy was found dead. my favorite charater was the chief because fooled everyone. the film was kind of depressing but most of the time inspirational like when they took the boat out for a ride everyone seemed so happy. i wondered why murphy didnt try to flee then. i think freedom wins at the end because the chief escapes. What I think it means to be crazy is to go against the norms of society and just acting different from the majority of the population. I think that there are different types of “crazy”. There is a dangerous crazy, where you hurt other people or animals or any living thing. There’s a crazy where you have mental problems and are unable to function at the same pace as the rest of society. And there is a crazy where no one believes you and therefore thinks you are crazy. To be “sane” is to be normal. But what’s normal, right? Okay, well to be sane is to act the same and or follow the norms of the rest of humanity. To be sane, is to act as expected. What I mean by that is, in certain situations, you’re supposed to act in a particular way. For instance, when someone body dies, you’re not suppose to laugh and rejoice, you’re suppose to act sad and depressed. Being sane is just conforming to the rest of the crowd. I say that because sometimes when we do new and different things, it scares the ignorant people who have never seen anything like that before, and so they categorize us as crazy. A lot of scenes stood out for me in this movie. The scenes that stood out in my mind were the ones where Randle MacMurphy first meets Chief and is determined to communicate with him and try to make him talk and understand. It’s funny because at first, you think that Chief is dumb and unable to understand. So when Chief does these little things that Randle tells him to do, it’s funny how Chief does it but then very slowly. Another scene was when they went fishing. That was really random. Another scene was when Randle got the security guy to open the doors or windows, for Candy and I think Daisy to come in. They were having a party and they were drinking booze and just doing all these stupid things. It’s funny because they already do weird things because they’re crazy, and after you give them booze, it’s just twice their natural behavior. The scene that stood out the most was the scene where Chief killed Randle MacMurphy. That was sad, but Chief thought that was the right thing to do. Chief thought that Randle had nothing else to live for because he was missing a part of his brain and he’s unable to function and he’s dependent. He’s just a burden. The characters stood out for me was Chief. Chief is tall and big but still gentle and nice. He’s a good and loyal friend. The other crazy people at the institution stood out because of their questionable behaviors. It was funny to watch them all interacting together. Especially when Randle MacMurphy always tells that one guy with the glasses who’s there because of his wife, to shut up. They always put him down. This film made me feel sad at the end because Chief was so excited to go run away with MAcMurphy to Canada. But then his spirits were broken when he realized that Randle was gone. I think the metaphor of the film was what the idea of “crazy” is. Also, I think it shows how the society controls us. Like, majority wins. For example, the fact they took part of MacMurphy’s brain. The institution is supposed to be society and MacMurphy is just the odd man out. If you were considered “Crazy” or just different and you’re surrounded with “normal” people, the first thing they would try to do is try to make you conform to their customs or get rid of you. I think that the institution thought they won because they got what they wanted. They had the authority and the power to do that to MacMurphy. They controlled everything. But Chief in a way also won. He got to escape. The whole time he tricked the whole institution. He made them believed that he was crazy and dumb but he really wasn’t. And then in the end he was able to escape. Or did he escape? What if they catch him and put him in a more intense involuntary institution? But we don’t know that because athe movie only ended with Chief running away, so he wins.

One of the scenes that stood out in the movie was when that big Native guy showed that he really was not deaf and that he understood and could talk like normal people. I had that feeling from the beginning when I first saw that movie. I also had a feeling that Randle McMurphy was not really insane either. It looks like the nurse and the staffs at the mental institutions were very abusive towards the patients. Some of those patients didn’t seem all that crazy. McMurphy didn’t seem insane because he looked like he was aware of what was going on in there and he had sympathy for all of those patients.
The characters that stood out were of course McMurphy, the nurse, the Native guy and the guy who was taken away towards the end of the movie because he slept with a woman. Another scene that caught my attention was when McMurphy was choking the nurse. I guess he got pist because he got tired of her abuse towards his friends. To the staff, this action made McMurphy look more crazy, when in reality it seem like the nurse is crazy.
I thought the movie was very boring from the beginning and missed the ending because I had another class to go to. But then I rented the movie and watched the end at home and that’s when the movie got interesting right after their party. Another scene was when it looked like McMurphy had the chance to escape because the windows were open, but he didn’t. I got kind of confused about the ending like when the Native guy killed McMurphy, then took off, I thought they liked each other. He was the only one to escape. The only point I could think of is that if you let others drive you crazy, you will most likely end up that way because you were weak. In contrast, if you do not let your emotions take over and play it cool like the Native guy, when the opportunity comes, you take it. Other than that, I’m not sure what the metaphor is. May be the Native guy killed him because he thought he was weak or may be he wanted to put McMurphy out of his misery.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

Crazy, to me, is what is relatively abnormal in a society, and sane, is to be able to function "normally" with the majority of the populaion. This movie was pretyy good, the scene that stood out to me the most was at the end when chief "sets randle free" from the institution. the characters that stood out were, randle chief, the guy that screamed for his ciggartettes, and the guy that had sex while the girls were over. The movie made me laugh alot, but, it made me feel sad for the patients in the institution, because they had to go throught electroshock therapy if they acted up, aand i dont get why they had to labotomize randle. At the end, i think that chief and randle win, because both of them were freed from the institution.. one way or another.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

The definition of "crazy" in Webster's New Pocket Dictionary is "insane" or "foolish, wild". "Sane" means to be "mentally healthy". Mac is not crazy at all. All he desperately needs is freedom and he thinks that the way he can attain freedom is by staying in the mental institute rather than staying in prison. ONce he got there, he wanted everyone else to feel free. He discovered the system of the institution. It can make ones that are not crazy, crazy, with all the rules to follow, like little kids, or worse; the control "authority" has on the "mentally ill".
A scene that stood out in my mind was when Mac and Chief were playing basketball against the men that worked in the mental institution. It was just a moment of awe because then I still thought that Chief was "deaf and dumb". It was really funny when he was running to the other side of the court, him being almost monsterous tall. Another scene that I liked was when all the "crazy" men fot out of the mental institution to go fishing. I just thought that it was cool that they were able to get big fish and that they were able to have fun out of the controlling institution.
The film made me feel kind of sad because it reminded me that as much as we are promissed freedom in this country, people are never going to relly be free. There is always that control of government. People just like to thing that they are free, but true freedom doesn't exist. It might be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on how it is looked upon. Both sides, individual and authority, win. Mac gets a kind of freedom by dieing because he no longer has to be i the hospital without the ability to think and with people controlling him and what he does all the time. Chief wants to get out, and he does. The "crazy" men stay in the mental institution, but they are voruntarily there, so I guess they're okay with staying there. The people that work in the institute still have a job and , I think, continue with the "everyday rotine of controling the patients. (Reply to this) (Thread) |

I think that crazy means that you are a threat to society, and that you don't really don't know what is going on most of the time and that you don't really fit that image of a sane person. To be sane is just simply knowing what is going on and that you know the difference between right and wrong and are able to acknowledge what they are doing, and being like most of the rest of the population. The scenes that most stuck to my head was when we was trying to get the rest of the crazy patients, I thought that if he was trying to get everyone to think that he was insane he shouldn't be acting so "sanely", another scene that stuck in my mind was that when he when he was in the pool and he found out that he wasn't getting out, I thought that that was kind of dumb of him because he should have done his research first, I saw that disappointment and horror in his face and at that moment he made me feel his frustration and disillusionment, he made me felt what he felt, he made me feel sorry for him. This film made me feel that nothing is ever sure in life and that if you try to undermine authority or bend the rules to your advantage it is not always going to play out in your favor, I do this sometimes with people and now I feel that I should check myself and think about what I am doing. Metaphorically speaking I thought that, Mac came in to leave the place, he saw it like the light at the end of the tunnel, but he instead it turned out to be the worst choice he ever made, and I thought that it was ironic that he came into the insane asylum to get out of what he thought was hell, and he ended up in hell, and instead of getting himself out, he got someone else out, which obviously wasn't his intention. I think that authority was victorious, because they won the battle with Mac and the guy who committed suicide, and the other system only won that battle with chief. (Reply to this) (Thread) |

this is a really good movie and it brings up a lot of themes in society then and today. having seen the movie a couple times before watching in the class, i'd always see the authority vs individualism part of the movie, but i never saw it in the freedom aspect as Mr. Leibner pointed out in class and freedom has a lot to do with this movie. McMurphy represented a rebellion against the normal and boring procedures of authority that was Nurse Ratched. at the beginning Ratched had the power and contained the rebellion early on but as the movie progressed you see that she was losing her grip. and freedom was clearly in site to the rest of the group but they were scared because they didn't know what to do with freedom or how to handle it since they've been for the most part sheep following the system and never questioning the system. i think i brought up a good idea when i said that even though McMurphy died, chief still carried on his dream of freedom and escaped for himself. it's at a draw because only 1 person got away, while the others still obey the system because that iss all they know so they're going to stick by it.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

The first time i saw this film was back in the 9th grade. My first impression was that it was going to be another boring movie. I was wrong, i ended up liking the movie and till this day i can remember the movie clearly. Ithink be categorize as being crazy when someone does not act like the commom person and then being sane is when they behaqve like any average person but then everyone has their one perspective of what sane is. The scene that stood out in my mind the most was when Nicholsons character tried to teach chief how to play basketball. It was very funny and we get to see MacMurphy being kind to his fellow people. MacMurphy character was my favorite because he was the only one of the group to always try daring and adventurous actions. I liked his character because i felt like i was like that in the real worl, his character reminded me of how i am always trying to do crazy stuff like MacMurphy just to have fun. Another very intresting character was Chief, he was intresting because thorugh outthe film he was silent until his few words at the end. I think hes an intresting character because we never get to actually see what chief is really about because he never talks and he keeps everything to himself. THis film made me feel happy at times becuase the group had fun times with MacMurphy and they enjoyed his company. I also felt a sad feeling towards the end when the young boy dies. I think that in the end the institutions authority wins because it is too much for MacMurphy to handle all by himself. This was a great film to watch because we get to feel what people in the 70's felt about their higher superirors and how many people became rebellious.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

I seen this movie before so it wasn't that inetersting the second time around. The scene where Nurse Ratched refuses to let Mac watch the baseball game is really important because he is made an example of. She is showing the other inmates that she has authority and whatever she says goes. The inmates can't make a decision on there own, it needs to go through careful consderation before the inmates can do anything. Another scene that stood out was when they got out and went on a boat to fish. This scene shows us that they are starting to have fun and aren't going to be supressed by he government anymore. They are starting to break free. It shows that they can do things on their own and not cause problems. The scene where that one boy gets caught sleeping with another girl shows how much he has grown thanks to the help of MAc. It shows what kind of impact someone can have on someone ele's life. I guess the syaing is right"One person can make a difference." For a moment the boy feels free and doesn't stuttter he got confidence. The scene where the Chief kills MAc was really sad, but he made the tough choice because he knew that Mac wouldn't of wanted to live that way. The chief sets him free from his misery and breaks free from the institution.
Throughout the movie you see how chief transforms into this great new person. At first he was quiet, but then Mac came along and got him to interact in the basketball game, and eventually he started to play it. He seemed depress before and then when he played basketball a spark in his eyes lit up, he was happy. Chief stops being quiet and talks to MAc, and AMc gives him the inspiration to leave the institution. Mac is the major character because he touiches everyones heart and impacts their lives. Each of the inmates recieved something from him that will last forever. MAc was the inmates hero he was the leader. Nurse Ractched represents the government and how they want to control everything with no questions asked ,and mac represents the citizens who aren't going to take that crap anymore.
The film was great and it made me fel sympathy for the people who are in institutions. That is sad that they have shock therapy. I don't think that should be legal. The institutions should focus on why the individual is crazy and try to help. People shouldn't just be put in there locked up because they are "crazy" They should be treated like human beings. The "crazy" people should be sent there to get help not to be locked up and kept away from society. This film made me angry against the government because why should they decide who is crazy and who ios normal. Who is to say a perosn is normal. Theres a little crazy in all of us.
The inmates have a small win because Chief breaks free, the boy makes a choice and sticks with it, and the other inmates are inspired to rebel. The officials can't control what you do or not and my Chief following in Macs footsteps helps shows that.

To be crazy means that someone mentally unstable and not what society thinks is normal. Sane is when someone acts as society expects them to be. the scene that stood out the most with me was when macmurphy died. i was both happy and sad. It sucked that he died but he fought for what he thought was right. nurse ratched was an interesting character.she was so distant and didnt sem to care about anything. i think that the bigger picture throught out the movie is fighting for what you think is right.macmurphy and the others all stood against their superiors and you can sense that the people in charge are starting to loose it. thats how the "crazy" people won. they got into the "sane"people mind and beat them at their own game. This movie was filmed with a great message to portray society during this era!It showed its audience the image of its mental institution and what the world was becoming! You have this characeter such as randy that is being charged for a crime and finds his ecape in a mental institution. he is quick to judge the people anmake fun of their daliy routine..when he discover.the unimagineable! He stood out to me because he was the one that was creating change for his friend..from a mans point if view...he try to makes his life and theres better..till the end..and actually put thought..to what he was seeing and living..in real skin...the scenes that stood out to me.where two..when he is teaching(the chief) how to play basketball && make him learn something new!..he triess..and tries..showing him..with determination..what he is capable of to do..instead of moping around..! Another scene tha stands out to me is the end! is the person randy has become sadly..due to his way of living life..he is beat at what he was trrying to escape && the (chief)puts him..out of his misery..in return for his gratitude.Th efilm made me feel a bit curios of this mens life in that place....where some like randy??did others turn insane??were they insane?? many questions..that the film put audience to think...The filma gave me a sad feeling! to the treatment they were receving && their daily life..=[...I belive the metaphors was escaping prison was no better than being theree at the instituion. An that you cant really escape what is meant to be! randy try to escape jail were he found his misery to enjoy! The institution wins! they achive to kill any life randy has at being who he was and is turn into this useless and dumb person..THAT NOW REALLY FITS in this mental institution(Reply to this) (Thread) |

This movie is one of my favorites in this class. You're right this film even though it was made in the 70s, hasn't dated a bit, i felt like that while watching the film as if it was a new release or somethin'. Ya this blurty is kinda late. but i really did like the film a lot. It was one film that wasn't boring at all, not once in the film it was boring to me. Basically this movie is more than just about the "nuts". It was bout the rebellion of the minority againts the majority or the superior, the battle againts the liberal and the conservative. I think we all know which one is which. Basically MacMurphy is not really crazy but in a way he is, i mean at least pretty disturbed human being don't you think, that live things in the edge and in a way crazy, because he cant control himself, maybe not crazy but for certain he doesn't have total control of his actions, or else he wouldn't have ended up where he ended up. But to me the victorious will always be the authority, i mean look what happened to RP he died at the end, ya the chief did escape but now what everyone else stays, and the chief will probably get caught, its pretty much the victory for the Nuts is very temporary, very slight compare to the authority, because look at what happened billy commited suicide, which by the way, if thats the case today, nurse ratched would be fired and not working like they showd in this film, like the very next day she's workin. What im trying to say is that RP may shake it up a lil and voice out wht the rest of the sheep wants to say but at the end when he's gone, things will be the same from the beginning. RP is one of the characters that i really like, because he reminded me of a lil kid that always tested his parents and very rebellious, never gave up and never changed, but things always don't work out for that kid unless he joins the parents and stop rebelling, in RP's case he was turned into a vegetable right before he was suffocated. Some scenes were disturbing, like the scene when RP gone crazy crazy and tried to choke out Nurse Ratched because it seemed very real andi thought she was really gonna die if front of our eyes, thats probably the only choke scene that ive seen that looks real as it would in real life, imagining what it would look like in real life, would be that scene's portrayal. Another character was the guy from back to the future, the guy that kinda just stayed quiet but mysteriously thinking of ways to get back at the system and one way was RP, and he's kinda the follower type and he followed RP alright. Also Nurse Ratched, boy oh boy she's an evil nurse very authoritative, i think its good to be authoritative, but sometimes you gotta know when to lay off, specially with the kind of patients you have, you have to know which kind needs for you to be more calm and which one needs for you to be aggressive, like in billy's case, i don't think he's the kind you need to be aggressive in, because he's the depress type and very sensitive, by being the way she was at the end, really just gave him all the say in taking his life away because he was very desperate and scared, besides that's the kind of environment he came from with his mom, and nurse ratched kinda just too that spot, which wasn't the good way to rehab billy. All in all maybe Mac was a good thing to show that specific psych ward some lessons in how they run things and what ways they can prevent things like that to never happen again.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

In my opinion a crazy person is someone who doesn’t care about what their actions do to other people. They do things that are unreasonable and somewhat irrational. Their personality doesn’t fit in with the “norm” in society. It is as if they feel no remorse for what they do. They can hurt people and even put themselves in danger with no regrets. Being sane is the exact opposite. They know what they are doing and they know how their actions effect other people. A sane person is a person who is always aware of their surroundings. Jack Nicholson is one of my favorite actors. He portrays Mac very well. In my opinion his character wasn’t crazy. He knew what he was doing and he knew how his action affected those around him. He was just a very selfish person and only wanted to benefit himself. The scene that sticks out most to me is when Mac got part of his brain removed. It was as if everything he stood for was stripped from him. His courage and will not to conform just disappeared. So that sucked for him. haha. Also when the Indian dude killed him to ease his suffering was pretty intense too. It seemed that this film tried to show us that no matter how much you try to fight to system it always seems to beat you in the end. Mac was a symbol of freedom in a way. He was the kind of person that did as he pleased which was one of the values this country was founded upon.

This film was a great movie after we watched it I went to blockbuster to rent it and watch it again. I think that this movie has a strong meaning on what it means to be a free spirited person. I think that nurse Ratched is the one to blame for all of the things that happened in the hospital. I think that if she had been a little more easy going with the patients all the bad things that happened could have been avoided.
The scenes that stood out in my mind were when they nurse Ratched gets there the next morning and is looking for the guy that stutters (I FORGOT HIS NAME) she is the responsible one for him killing himself because when he came out of the room he was talking perfectly fine but as soon as she mentions his mother his starts all over again and he kills himself because he doesn't want nurse Ratched to tell his mother.
I think that the one who wins in the end is the chief he played it smart the entire movie by faking to be deaf.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

CRAZY= something out of the ordinary. What "normal" people wont do. SANE= what "normal" people do. The schema of normal fits into sane.
the part that i like best id in the beginning when Randle doesnt want to take the medicine and he drinks the water and the pill is still in his mouth. I find it funny how no matter what we dont eat anything that people wont tell us what it is. I know i wont eat something until i know exactly what it is. Specially medicine. Medicine is big and it can ven kill a person if they dont take the pill right. I found this funny because that is when i believe he started to influence the other people in the cockoos nest. the character that stood out the most was the guy with the glasses that would shake, i forgot his name but the guy that would shake and repeat his words. The chubby guy. Well i really liked him because in the beginnig of the film he is one of the only ones that would actually agree with everything Randle had to say. When he wanted to watch the world serie he was one of the only ones that raised his hand to support him. i think he just felt as if Randle was ging to save him. Jack Nickolson was the only small piece of hope of them gtting out i think this guy saw it.
the bigger metaphor of the film is that the birds cant get away from the nest until they can survive in the bigger world. Jack saw the little piece of hope of them surviving.
i really like this film.(Reply to this) (Thread) |

-What it means to be “crazy” or “sane” is what is considered to be tolerable or unacceptable by the social norms. There are two specific scenes that are stuck in my mind. The first scene is when Mac wanted to watch the World Series baseball game on television, but Nurse Ratched wouldn’t allow it. They agreed to take a vote, yet only Mac, Cheswick, and Taber voted to watch. The second scene is when they had another chance to vote again. More of the patients voted to watch the game. This upset Nurse Ratched, and so she was unfair and rigged the voting. This stuck out to me because with these two scenes, the power struggle between Nurse Ratched and Mac is very visible and obvious. -There are two characters whom stuck out to me. They are Chief and Cheswick. Chief stuck out to me because he’s such a good “B.S.er” and he fooled everyone into thinking that he’s def and dumb. He’s so hilarious! Plus he’s the very title of the movie. Chief is the “One [who] Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”. Cheswick stuck out to me because he acts like a little kid. It seems like he even has the mind of a child. Yet in one of the scenes when he was arguing with Nurse Ratched about his cigarettes, he yelled, “I am not a child, Nurse Ratched!” -The film made me feel the need to be free and able to be who I am as an individual, without caring for the social norms and about what everyone expects of me. I feel inspired to encourage many others to feel the same. Nobody should feel ashamed of what kind of an individual that person is. Everyone has a right to freely be his or her unique, individual self.

A scene that stuck out to me was the basketball scene. I found it extremely hilarious, even as i think about it right now. It was cool how Mac got the patients stimulated and working together. Chief running around getting excited about using his superior height advantage, funny stuff. If one however examines this scene more closely one finds that it was more than just a game, it was a deadly uprising. The rebellious Mac was winning the hearts and minds of the patients, and not just showing them a good time but also showing them that they are capable of victory, team work, and freedom from their oppression. At times the film made me feel mad, sad, disappointed, frustrated. It pissed me off how stupid and incapable some of the patients were, most of them could just walk out!! I understand that some of them need to be there but at the same time some really do not have to be their. I know some of them can function in the normal world. I felt the frustration of Mac when all he wanted to do was watch the World Series, but the nurse was being very anal about. Even when she found out she lost, she still won by exercising her authority. These types of people make me sick. At the end of the movie individualism won at the end. This is proven when the chief escapes the cuckoos nest. Some may argue however that Mac is dead and the rest of the patients are still in the psychiatric hospital therefore Authority has won. I disagree with that for the reason that although Mac his dead the patients will forever remember him as their hero and inspiration, as well as the Chief. The patients now have a goal and a dream to achieve, to finally become free.
