THE PLANET OF THE APES (1968 -- The Damn Original!!!)
Many people believe the year 1968 was the most volatile year in American history. Student protest over Vietnam began to reach its zenith. People were beginning to question the authority of the government in ways they had never done so before. Peopole began to believe that the US government was actually lying to its population.

Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were both assassinated within two months of each other. The Black Panthers were formed believing that there was no peaceful way whites in society were going to give up their power and offer blacks and other minorities justice. Other problems like pollution, the population explosion, the continued Cold War with the Soviets had people seriously believing that the human race was on the edge of destruction.

This film acts as a wonderful metaphor. Choose some aspect of the film and discuss how culture relates to it. Analyze DEEPLY how the very idea of culture is portrayed in this film and how it affects our psychology. What "truths" are revealed about "human" nature? Explore all the parallels you see in this film to our lives and psychology.

When the apes have a hearing for Taylor, the leaders didn't want to hear what Taylor had to say they figured he was just some dumb man. Taylor was trying to prve himself, the apes knew that he was somewhat right but didn't want to give listen to it. They were scared that if their rules were undermined than the whole society would be in chaos. No of the people would want to listen to their leaders any more. The ape leaders want to be in control of everything, without any questions. The ape leaders are afraid that if there is doubt to their beliefs that they will be doomed and they don't want to lose their power.
This relates to our culture because Taylor represents the younger generation. The young generation protested about the war, but the government didn't want to listen to what they had to say. The government tried to coverr up what was happening, just like in the movie with Talyor they wanted to get rid of him.
The government was afraid of losing there power, they wanted things to go the way they wanted. They thought that they knew what was best for the country. The government didn't want to listen. The younger generation didn't want to follow the government blindly.
People don't like to believe in something they don't really know about. For example, UFOs some people believe in it becasue they feel that they are out their while some people need hard evidence to know if thye should believe in it or not. It's in our nation to reject something so out of the ordinary without hard evidence. It's in our nature to dismiss the unknown.

An aspect of the film I noticed that relates to culture is the constant struggle about the issue between evolution versus creation. Til this day that issue still intrigues the nation. There are those who believe one thing and others who believe in something completely different. That is, people of high respect for religion believe that our human race was created by a higher being, whom is God. Others such as people who have devoted themselves to science believe that we have evolved from apes. Just like in the film, the apes believed that they have evolved from the humans. However, if that is true, that we humans have evolved from apes, then how come there are still apes around? I mean, wouldn't all the apes have evolved into humans? Another aspect is the battle between the generations. The young versus the elderly. The elderly are regarded much respect considering their wisdom they have gained during their lifetime. One of the parts in the movie that amused me was when Taylor shaved off his beard and Cornelius said that it made him look less intelligent. It's because Taylor looked older with his beard.
The very idea of culture that is portrayed in this film is the problem concerning the dominant nationality. In other words, this affects our psychology because of questions regarding which nationality is the most intelligent, the healthiest, the most powerful, etc. In "Planet of the Apes" there is the on-going presence of a certain theme in regards to superiority and power. Considering that this film is from 1968, it is easy to say that it is related to the political issue concerning the rights of African Americans. In the film, there were different "races" just like in reality the African Americans were looked upon as less than human--animals. In the film, the humans were portrayed as animal-like beings, yet they were still HUMAN beings. Also similar to the reality of 1968 is the elder ape, Dr. Zaius, who constantly made Taylor's presence unjust. For example, during court the elder ape asked questions that were unfair for Taylor to answer. The reality is that there were in fact ignorant and selfish Americans who feared the rising of the Black community and did everything they could to prevent the African Americans from gaining rights, which would separate them from the animals they were so perceived to be in those days. Yet, there were also individuals such as Cornelius and Zira who felt differently from Dr. Zaius. Cornelius and Zira helped Taylor because they knew it was the right thing to do and they were not afraid to know the truth. Kennedy and King were individuals like Cornelius and Zira in that they too were fighting for what they believed in no matter how much the government was against them. Kennedy and King were assassinated, Zira and Cornelius were charged with heresy, even though their innocence was proven. I think that the truths that are revealed about human nature is the fact that there still are people out there whom regard different nationalities in different ways, whether it is positive or negative. That is why there are racial stereotypes. Another truth that is revealed in the film about human nature are what Cornelius recited out loud as he read in the scroll, which Dr. Zaius instructed him to reach out in his pocket for:
'Beware the beast man, for he is the
devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates,
he kills for sport, or lust or greed.
Yes, he will murder his brother to possess
his brother's land. Let him not breed
in great numbers, for he will make a desert
of his home and yours. Shun him. Drive him
back into his jungle lair: For he is the
harbinger of death'.
I think society has become this way. Man does hunt for their own gain and pleasure. Man does kill man for manipulative purposes. Man and society are sinful. They have given in to temptation by the Devil and have become corrupt. Man should be feared.

I agree with what you said. I liked how you pointed out that on-going argument of evolution vs. creation. This issue has been around quite a while and there's still no answer, people just believe what they want to believe. I also like how you talked about the idead of the elders agaisnt the youth. I was wondering why in that part of movie the ape said he looked less intelligent. I thought it because he wasn't hairy like the rest of the apes, so the ape got a little offended. haha. So, did you remember that quote from down there? hah. I also agree on how you pointed that out about man being selfish and sinful becaue of society. That's true. We feed on whatever the society throws at us.

Overall I thought that The Planet of the Apes was okay. It was better than I expected and it was easier to comprehend than the newer version. It’s funny and ironic because the apes portray us. We believe that we humans are superior to other life, just like the apes believed that they were superior to others. We are also cruel to animals and experiment on them just like the apes were cruel and experimented on the humans. I like the part where the ape quotes some context of our philosophy only with humans. “Monkey see, monkey do” to “human see, human do”. You realize that it is a part of human nature to deceive others and to believe that they are the superior species. Just like how the minister ape knew everything about man, but lied and try to prevent others from finding out so that they can remain superior and in charge. So that they remain dominant. He also wanted to find others like Taylor and seemed to have a hidden desire to kill them of experiment on them and make them mute.
The scene where the apes first appeared and started to capture all the humans, it remind of how the whites use to catch runaway slaves or when the whites were hunting animals for zoo or experimental purposes. This shows how inhumane humans can be towards other species and maybe even to their own kind. Like how the minister ape looked down on the philosopher apes. The Planet of the Apes gave us the raw truth of the human species. Humans find it hard to believe that there are others out there that can challenge the superiority of their species. Humans are I constant denial and consider these facts heresy. You also see this idea of backward evolution when the minister talked about how apes derive from humans, when supposedly humans derived from apes. Whereas the minister ape (government/adults) represent the belief of superiority the philosopher apes (the youth) represent the curiosity of human nature and their tendency to search for the truth and unknown. That’s why we experiment.
You can also see the idea of how the government/adults were lying to the people in the late 60’s by the way that the minister ape wanted to conceal the information about the human species, so they attack the humans and keep them as slaves/experiments to ensure that the humans cannot better them. Through this movie you also feel and see political and social differences between the apes and humans. Human are the lowest and apes are distributed above. Everyone has a different opinion and political standing but is too afraid to speak up. It was a law to believe the teachings that apes derived from humans and that they are superior. You can also see the generation gap between those of the adults and the youth. The adults in the movie are those apes who wanted to prevent the other apes from finding the truth and the youth are the apes who wanted to find the truth.

At the end you see that this supposedly new planet was really earth (made obvious by the statue of liberty). Which was really shocking because who would’ve though that Earth’s dominant species, the human race, would be inferior and overpopulated by an animal species. This was a stab in the guts foe Taylor because all this time he wanted to prove to the apes that he was superior back on his home planet and would be superior to them on their planet as well, but it turns out he went from the top to the bottom. He was inferior. He also wanted to prove that Earth does exist and probably wanted to return, now he knows that he had returned. To me this movie carries the idea of a fresh start, like how Taylor is to be the new “Adam” and that girl was to be the new “Eve”. Maybe Taylor would change his mindset about the human race and change it for the better since he has seen the consequences of what had happened to Earth due to the human race. Or maybe he’ll remain the same and the human race would eventually become like The Planet of the Apes once again. We have to have the initiative to stop the human race from destroying Earth and its other species. Humans need to believe and accept the fact that they are not superior to all the other species. Taylor and the other girl is suppose to be “hope for the future”.
I was kind of confused about the ending. I know that the minister ape blew up the cave so no one else will learn the truth between the humans and the apes, but why was Taylor so upset that they destroyed the cave? Was it the missing link between the human race and the apes? Or was it because that was all that was left of the Earth Taylor known? Or was it because underneath all that dirt in the cave was the rest of the humans like Taylor lived?

Planet of the apes had alot of relations to society of that day. Taylor questioned authority and reason in the film and were persucted. The ape leaders were afraid of change and didn't want their belief system to be challenged. This represents the older people of the sixties. They had been taught a certain thing for generations and they didn't want the young people to mess around tradition. taylor represents the younger generation. The younger people of the sixties didn't want to do this as they always were, they didn't want to do what the government and their parents told them to do.They wanted to do what they believed was right. The movies charcters brought out the feelings of the late 60's.
Teenagers 18 thru 24 didn't want to go to vietnam and fight for no reason just like Taylor wouldn't let the apes take him or his kind over. The adults of the late 60's believed in the thngs their parents taught them and were raised to respect their elders just like the ape leaders. The control systems were very much alike and the outcome was too. Vietnam and its aftermath was a disaster justl ike the ending of the movie

Planet of the apes!
I saw this movie for the second time so I guess I cheated, I already knew that Taylor was on Earth. I found it more interesting the second time around because I understood it better but I got frustrated because I wanted it to end!
Hahaha.

Well, I think that this pictures the 1968 era perfectly because of the whole controversial plot. The apes are in charge, in our world apes are [not to offend anyone but it was even in the Carson newspaper and yes the person was punished for saying this] African people. In 1968 the people of the United States the majority college student were fighting for the rights of African Americans because they noticed that they were being treated unfairly. They rebelled against the government and believed that they were lying to the American people. This makes sense because here the humans which were all white, except that guy that came in the ship. Its controversial because the apes are in charge and thin of the humans as animals, when its actually backward but it was made to show that Apes are not animals. Well black people are not animals because they are not. Black people are just as human as Mexicans, white people, Guatemalans, Indians, and Filipinos etc.

The funny thing about this film is that even now in a new century we don’t have medicine to make us not age like they did. They just injected a needle into their skin and boom they lived over 2000 years. The truth about human nature that are concluded in this film are that we all have feelings and we all seek for protection, food and love. It’s funny because no matter what, Taylor wanted that girl to go with him even though she had no idea who he was or what he was talking about because she didn’t understand him. It was funny how she was ignorant to everything that was happening. Only he knew everything. He was the king of these people. He knew more than all of these people. Even the doctors. Life is unusual and confusing yet there will always be someone who will have more experience than others, those are the wise people, the people that will always win in arguments.

I enjoyed watching this movie, it’s my first time that I have ever seen this movie. I liked the metaphors used in this film. For example, the apes keeping humans in cages to study them. It felt kind of weird seeing how humans would act when they were kept in cages. The main character in the film acted like a real ape would and tried to escape. This reminded me of a clip I saw on television when an elephant tried to escape from the circus and killed many people along the way. People viewed the elephant as if it was going mad, but after seeing this movie, it shows that any creature or living thing would of course want to escape if they were caged or felt trapped. Another creepy feeling I got from the movie was when the apes cut out the guy’s brain. It made me thought of how humans would do something like this to experiment on animals. I am not an animal lover, but I never liked the idea of keeping anything or anyone from its or his or her freedom. This film shows that whenever freedom is taken away from any living creature, it will eventually rebel or act out of their social norms. I heard many horrible mistreatment of animals and this movie did a good job to show how humans would feel if reality was the other way around.

I like the part near the end when the older ape gave the note he wrote about humans. It said that humans kill animals for sport, kill their brother for land, and I forgot what else it said. Oh, it said that men were the evil. It is sad but true, what that note said is very true. Since the beginning of time, humans killed for land. It’s still happening these days. Nothing has changed, it’s just that today, people are better at hiding it because of all the new technologies that are available today. The media is one of the most brainwashing source of all, it keeps people ignorant. For example, some people view American as a holy country where as others who know the history and secrets of it view it differently. In the film, the main character speaks out about his injustice from the apes but he was speaking the truth. However, the apes looked at him like he was crazy. Similarly, those who speaks negatively about the government in reality are looked as crazy too. In North Korea for example, citizens there do not have a clue how other countries are like because they are brainwashed into thinking their country is the best place to live in. They are not even allowed to communicate with the outside world. So of course that is the only place to they know of, they look at everyone else around the world, especially the U.S. as inferior. That is similar to the movie, the apes only knew about their world, so they viewed any other creature, especially humans as inferior.

Another thing I noticed in the film is that it is in human nature to want to fight for, protect, and gain territory. In the beginning of the film Taylor said, “In no time, we would rule this place.” I don’t know what his exact words were, but this is the closest I can remember. He just landed in a strange place and already he looked at the other humans as inferior and wanted to take over. This shows that humans would want to take control of whatever seems vulnerable even if it means taking control of their own species. That is why slavery existed. I see it in everyday life, most people tend to take advantage of those who seems vulnerable whether is competing for a position at work, scamming people for money, lying, and so on it is in human nature to go for what we want and sometimes at the cost of hurting others.

Another amusing part of the movie was when the apes were worshiping their god, an ape in their own image. This reminds me about humans and their religion. People act according to what they believe in is the way to live because of their beliefs. I never did like the expression “stand up for what you believe in” I think that keeps people from seeing the truth. I always felt that people should think about what they believe in before they act out on it because beliefs are not always truth.

The whole movie expresses culture; both of the humans (animals) and of the apes. Living in a planet of apes, the humans are the ones that are in danger. The reason why Cornelius and his fiance were looked down upon in the scientific field was because it went against what they went by; the study of animals (humans). In the trial, the prosecutor and the three members of the council kept bringing up the laws and stating that it is not in the ape law that a human can speak for himself in a trial. They were also repetitive that it the study of both Cornelius and his fiance were heresy. Their culture was disapproval about the study of these so called animals, and going against that made it tough for the two.

Another scene that showed culture was towards the end, when Taylor and his woman friend were going to go off, but Cornelius didn't want to follow because he said that being with the apes was his "culture." Cornelius and his fiance would have never felt "at home" venturing off with Taylor because he was so used to apes all of his life, that being with these animals would just be alien to him.

Ever since we are little, we are given a culture and through time, it starts to become a part of us and makes us see life the way our culture sees it. Cornelius would have never been able to survive with the humans because from the start, he was an ape, saw ape and lived with ape. Changing that would disrupt his whole psychology. It is also culture that creates comfort zones and living with the animal would be crossing the border.

Almost everything said about humans in the ape law were true, except the whole interpretation was false. Humans are curious and will try to find as much information as they can. They will go to extreme measures to get their questions answered, like what the astronauts did. They gave up their homes, their loved ones, and their planet just to go off into a strange place and find out what there really is out there. A human will also protect himself if he is ever in danger, like what Taylor did. He was not able to speak at first, but when he was in real danger, he spoke, scaring everyone. I think the truth about human nature is that we try to never be in danger even though we are so curious. If we are ever in that position, we would do whatever it takes to get ourself out of it, like what Taylor did by writing in English when he wasn't yet able to talk. He then found out the truth about Dr. Zaius, using that as an advantage to explain himself and the very being of his existence.

We will always try our best in life and even more, to get the things we want, or the things we don't want.

i thought this movie "planet of the apes" was really good! actually way better than the newer version. It gave a real taste and vision of the movie plot and story to its viewvers. What i captured in the movie was the clash of race and hisory. How you have this 2 different species. That live with the same mentality and act the same way. They are different in the physical and the history of their times. Everything is just flipped around and you have this chaous and confusion of who really own this place called earth! it gave it a sension of what was going on in this time of the movement..racism..and martin luther king! They are both trying to live a life that was created by humans but seem to meet togethir when the time change is different. The idea of culture is portrayed in this film by the apes and humans. THey believe in different theories and values of how to live their life. Even though they have similar things. You have this apes thats try to have power and control over the humans. Giving humans no authority to think for themselves but to be bossed around and used as pet. Then you have this man taylor that is standing up for this humans Proving the apes wrong! the metaphor to me is like black and whites. The apes are the monkey and the humans are the white. taylor is martin luther king trying to set the world right and fighting for what fair and just. You have the ending as the result of all this fighting and trying to find the truth! It affects our psycology because we have this mentality and believe that monkey and apes or not like humas but have similar connections. So we treat them like animlas and try to figure out t his theory. An in this movie you have humans that are being the monkeys and are being tested on! which changes everything!the truth that is revelaed about humans is that we have created the world we are in..and we are the creators of all that happens and remains within us. An as time changes..history tells a story and our ancestor leave proof of what we have destroyed and slowy still remains living..Leaving imagination and exsisten of life fighting for truth!

Finally, the original Planet of the apes. It was so better than the new one. This one made more sense than the new one. Movie wise, this is good. To the topic of this being a metaphor, i can see how the movie producers or director thought bout what was happenin in the wolrd in the 60's. For me, the apes represented the white, the white guy in this movie represented the black and other minorities, the desert bein the boundary on how far black's and other minorities to becomin close to whites, and the hatred of the apes towards man is the hatred of white towards black.

First of all, i like this movie because it made me question "where are the apes?" they didnt show up till like the 30 min of the movie. so yea. back to the topic, in the 60's, black's were treated like dirt, like garbage, like nothin. everythin they did, the facinating things they did, where not recognize by whites because of their skin color. Same thin in this movie, when the captain (forgot his name) made his paper airplane and started talkin, the orangutans didnt care. They didnt care if he talked, had a brain, can walk, can eat, or anythin they can do. The only thing on the orangutans mind was y are they like them. i feel like its the same things that happened in the 60's. For me the metaphor of them walkin across the desert and the orangutans callin it dangerous was the struggle of blacks tryin to climbin up the social status. It sucks how after they cross the desert, they get shot, beat up, stuff (which was kinda gross), and experimented. This is what happen to Martin Luther King JR. He climb up in the social status, people knew him to be a black powerful leader, and he helped blacks to be free, but ryt when he got to the top, he got assassinated. Anyone who helped him, got silenced. Like Kennedy. He helped Mr. King to reach that goal. He too got assassinated. In the movie, scientist ape girl and archeologist ape guy helped captain from outer space(sorry forgot their name) to be free. In the end they were punished. So i can see how this movie really related to in the 60's.

i was bored with this movie at the beginning. i felt that it was moving rather slow at first, but once taylor and his fellow crew members saw the humans for the first time, then the movie got interesting. The humans were being controlled, manipulated, and were mute. So i think that maybe thats how the general population felt about government and the way that society was turning into during the 60's. The people probably felt powerless, and unable to speak up for themselves and demand justice, like the mute humans in the "Planet of the Apes". Every aspect of their lives were being controlled, so i aggree with Michelle that Taylor was like the Martin Luther King Jr. of the mute humans, because he was the only one with a voice, and the only one with the power to help the others and demand that they have rights.
It made me sad, seeing taylor on a leash, the humans being hosed down, and everything else that was done to them. we do the exact same thing to animals, yet it isnt until we see it being done to us that it makes us think that we aren't treating animals the way we should. The Ape court also justified their actions towards taylor due to the fact that since he was an "animal" and not an ape,he didnt have any rights at all. So maybe since there was a lot of racism during the 60's, this movie is trying to say that we dont treat others the way we should, and dont allow them all the opportunities that they should be entitled to because they arent "apes" so to speak. just a thought. Didn't the police use extreme tactics, such as hosing down african americans in order to enforce "peace"? so this movie is similar to how humans in the 1960's were being treated by the "apes" which is the higher authority! Humans have the power to bring about so much change and good in the world, but we can equally cause so much destruction and hurt to others. wow.

I thought The Planet of The Apes was an okay movie. There were some comedic parts to it. Like when the one monkey said the “Human see, human do” from the “monkey see, monkey do” cliché. I kind of forget how the newer version of The Planet of the Apes went. At first, in the beginning, I thought the monkeys were supposed to be the humans that the astronauts saw in the beginning picking the fruits. In my mind, I was like, “Wow the technology back then was that bad? The monkeys look like cavemen.” But then later on, the “real” monkeys came. I felt dumb. Haha. Well, anyways, like what you said from our first discussion, ‘people are there just to die’. There were a lot of people in this movie that was there just to die. Like “Stuart”, or that lady astronaut and the two other men, well one of them just got screwed. In the original, didn’t more than one still survived? I forget.

The higher statuses in this film were the apes and the humans were the minority and “animals”. I think that the monkeys were portraying the political leaders in that time. I think what this movie is trying to imply is that the political leaders were acting like monkeys during that time. Since the teenagers at those times were rebelling and wondering why there was a war, I think they’re portraying the political leaders as behaving as monkeys. Also, about how that one leader monkey knew all about how humans were he first ones on their planet and that humans could actually be intelligent and intellectual. Truth revealed about human nature: everyone has/keeps a secret. Like that monkey I was talking about. He knew, but he took advantage of the other apes and filled their minds that monkeys rule and are the best. I think that part was supposed to imply the political leader’s behavior into not fully telling everyone what’s going on and why. Also, the idea of manipulation. These monkeys manipulated the others by telling them that there’s a forbidden zone and that no one has ever made it through. It’s things like that that’ll get you what you want.

I think that when one group has power, there’s a stereotypical behavior that they play. When you have the power, you’ll act selfish, think you’re more superior. I think that was something the movie was trying to tell us. The monkeys not only thought, but said that they’re better and that the humans were just plain dumb. That’s how, in real life, how humans think about themselves. I believe that this movie was a good interpretation of that thought. We only think that animals can’t do what we can do but they probably have the ability to. That’s an aspect of the film I noticed.

So, overall this was good movie. I like the creativity and originality. I’m not surprised that this movie was even able to be seen by the public. I would figure that our country leaders would get offended and be scared for the fact that this is true during that time. Or did it? Did this movie cause any chaos to the country at that time? I wonder if this movie shocked anyone. I think if I lived around that time, I would be surprised and realize that the idea being played in this movie is fact.

By far this film has been one of my favorite watching, especially how the film paralleled what was happening in society at that time. You’re sitting in your seat angry because the apes seem so damn ignorant, yet they are supposed to be portraying humans, so what does that tell us about ourselves. The apes so called “religion” rules supreme and whatever contradicts their beliefs goes, and this makes it hard for them to accept that Taylor is like them. It was ironic at how the only female on board dies leaving all men, because if they had never found women they would seriously be the last men alive and would no means at procreation whatsoever.
This film deeply portrays the racism in America at the time, the apes being the whites and the humans being the blacks. It’s pretty funny at how the humans would be depicted as the African-Americans, because the word “human” and it gives more credit to the blacks. Also it felt that they didn’t give enough credit to the black actor in the film. Didn’t the apes notice that he was probably the darkest one in the bunch? This goes to show at how humans can tell each other apart but not apes, and in the movie one ape says “they all look alike”.
I think the whole Forbidden Zone being of limits is pretty funny. Just because one person said they couldn’t go no questions it. The chimps are the supposed lower class and the orangutans represent the high class, America at its best. Also during this time period Americans had a fear of being wiped out by nuclear weapons and it is said in Planet of Apes that the human race was destroyed due to nuclear weapons and that was the start of the dominant Ape species.
Overall this movie has by far been one of the best I seen, due to all the metaphors for society in the ‘60’s and also because there aren’t that many movies where you get to see talking monkeys.

I thought that the movie was interesting. This movie, the original, Planet of the Apes relate to our society in many ways. One way that this movie relates to us is by treating everyone or every creature differently, except for our own race. We treat other species as dirt, and give them no respect as they should deserve. In the beginning of the movie while all the humans are capture, a short scene shows us that the human that are being hung upside down by their feet, looking like chickens. To the apes the human were like their “genuine pigs.” They would do all kind of experiment on the humans (just as the human would do to the apes).
One truth about the human nature that I heard in the movie is that the human race killed each other off and they are self-centered, that is why the “higher position” apes didn’t want to listen to Taylor or all humans. They think that the humans will destroy the world.
Instead of the apes turning into cave men and cave men turning into humans, humans turned into cave men, and cave men turning into apes. The evolution of human is all messed up. Instead of the evolution of human, it will be the evolution of apes. Another facture that I found interesting is that, as years go by the technologies worsen. For the humans species, as year goes by our technologies get better and improved. We will create new invention and ideas. But for the ape species, there technology was like weak. They didn’t have cars or any transportation methods. They used horses for transportation.
I like the ending of the movie. It was so different from the revised one. The astronauts really came back to Earth but everything changed. I love the part when the movie shows us the Statue of Liberty; it made everything clear, and understandable. It is amazing, just by showing one short sense; you could understand what had happened.

to be totally honest, i didnt really enjoy watching this film. i found it rather boring and it didnt satify me. to me, the title of the film, "planet of the apes" already sounded "ehh" to me. this film did have it funny parts, like one scene in particular that i remember was when one of the apes said, "human see, human do" rather than saying "money see, monkey do." i thought that was pretty cool. but overall, it didnt interest me. not really my style. however, i think that this film sent out a good message and was a huge hint to people.

i think making a film is a great way to spread word out people. this film was a good metaphor to give people a "heads up". it opened everyone's eyes to what really was going on. as i was watching the film, i noticed how the apes were the ones in TOTAL control of the human beings. to me, the sort of resembled the government or some kind of higher authority back then in the 1960s and how they had total power over everyone. then, i noticed how the humans were the ones being mistreated, could barely talk, and were trying to get out of the control the apes had over them. they were basically treated like animals. (very ironic because the "higher authority" in this film were animals, apes!) then i realized, hmm, maybe they resemble society back then in the 1960s. then it all came to me. i mean, this film was made during the 1960s & the rise of the black panthers for rights for both themselves and as well other minorities skyrocketed. so i think that this particular group of people felt like they were the ones being abused, had no voice whatsoever, and were being controlled by the government. they felt that they were being viewed as not even human beings. as animals, & that is how society back then was portrayed in this film.

to basically sum up everything up, i think this whole movie represents the white citizens' fear of black (& not only black, but other minorities as well) domination. they were so stuck by their egotistical thoughts of superiority, that they would stop at nothing to maintain this position. they feared the black's capabilites that they basically rejected and refused to accept them.

theeeeeeee end!!

I really enjoyed watching Planet of The Apes. The first time I watched this film was when I was a little younger with my dad. At first I didn't get really comprehend the hidden metaphor when I first watched it. I thought the apes would represent the humans, and the humans represented the apes in our society today. But then that was all wrong, because in the ending Taylor wouldn't be so mad about realizing that he was in his planet this whole time. As I started to watch this movie, I first then came to mind that the Apes were representing the Whites, and the humans were representing the blacks. In the 1960's, that's when the whole segregation was occurring with the time of Marin Luther King Jr. The apes were representing the Whites since the contrast of white is black and humans were representing the black because white is the opposite of black. This proves to that both whites and blacks and humans and are mistreating their own kind. While I was thinking about that whole concept, the first one that died in the movie was the black astronaut of the the 2 white astronauts. I also realized that the orangutans were the higher rank because the were a lighter color than the chimps. What i also saw was when the apes had made their own religion and laws but then contradict them as well. They say that all apes should be treated equally when the orangutans get much more respect than the apes.

In the ending, the whole statue of Liberty had a lot to say for the whole storyline of the movie. The big metaphor in the movie Planet Of the Apes was how the people wanted liberty and freedom of happiness for their country during the 1960s. That is why in the movie, when Taylor sees the statue of liberty, was to show how even when 2000 years pass by the whole concept of laws and restrictions prevents the people from having liberty. The humans will always find a way to segregate different cultures like how humans treat animals in real life.

Another thing that I noticed in the movie was the whole Love concept. Even though the movie had no Sex parts, Love also played a theme in the movie. Once the psychologist chimp sees Taylor, I sense a whole love connection with them two. Then how the psychologist chimp rewards Taylor with a woman. Taylor soon gets very attached to this woman and plans to save her as well when he finds his was back to his planet. Near the ending, they then show the scene were Taylor kisses the psychologist, this portrays how black and white are one human creature as a whole.

In the movie, you see how the apes treat humans as animals by attacking them and putting them into cages only because the apes knew how to think and reason. When Taylor started to show that his intelligence the apes, the orangutan knew the humans used to be much brighter than them. This also helped me realize that humans always to put something lower in their rank to make ourselves much superior of what we are.

This movie helped me think a lot about what was going on with th e 60s and even know today...20 years later, the whole concept of segregation manifests itself in our society.

I really liked this movie, the original one is much better than the other one. I expected this movie to be boring because it was made during 1968. I actually think that all old movies are boring but I guess I was wrong. I was surprised at the ending, I didn’t expect them to be in United States. I actually thought that they might be from some other planet. When I saw the statue of liberty I was shocked because the way that the apes were made it seem like humans lived there. Just thinking about all of the human beings dying and so many apes alive is giving me the creeps.

This movie made me realize how we treat others. Seeing how the apes treated the human beings in the movie made me think about how we put animals in a cage. We know that animals can’t talk but just thinking that they might be able just like the movie is just plain weird. In the movie they show that human beings can’t talk and can’t think they only can mimic other people is making me question myself if an animal can do the same thing as humans. When Taylor was in a trial the apes didn’t want to listen to one word of Taylor’s when he was trying to defend himself. It’s exactly like how some human beings don’t want to listen to other people. The apes knew that the human beings lived their before them but they still tried to keep it a secret. Its almost like the US government trying to hide things from the US citizens. They think that if they tell the truth to everyone then things would get out of control. This movie is basically about how HUMAN Beings treat things and how they act.

Im not sure if this is right. You can say that culture relates to this movie by how the apes treated the human beings. Some Americans dislike other ethnicity and other people. The Americans didn’t like other cultures back in the day, they would treat them like animals. The animals are like the other cultures. The Americans didn’t want to listen to what the other people said. This shows how bad human beings are. Human beings only care about themselves and their own culture and ethnicity. The movie tells how we are and how we act from the point of view of apes. A human being doesn’t realize how bad it feels when one is against them until they go through the same thing.

I had never seen this film before(new or original version). When I heard we were going to watch "The Planet of the Apes", I was not so excited about it. I am not so fascinated about science fiction films. However, I have to admit that I enjoyed watching this film. It is a very good fiml which shows how humans can make "the best" of the world, or "the worse". In particular, I liked how the apes were given people characteristics. What they thought about the humans or "animals" is what a lot of people, now in days, think about spiders, pigs, etc. We think that they are not capable of "rule-ing" the world, when in fact they can. I like the way the apes and the "humans" changed roles because it made the story very interesting.

It seems as if humans can not keep themselves from wanting to take over the place which they "discover", in particular, Americans. Nationalism was a big key during the Cold War. It annoyed me when the Americans saw the "cavepeople", and Taylor said that they(the American men) could easily rule the place/planet because those "cavepeople" looked naive and easy to control. This is how Americans wanted to take over other territories then, and it is with the same idea that the U.S. is invading and "taking control" of other countries now, like Iraq.

In the film, the "blonde" apes are superior to the "brunette" apes. Parallel to the real world, the "whites" are "superior" to the "colored". This represents the in-justice that was going on, and still goes on betwee the non-colored and the colored, today. One of the "blonde" apes insisted that "animals" could not communicate, and the rest of the apes agreed with what he said, except two of them. They went against the "greater"(blonde) apes and didn't stop until they were heard and achieved their purpose, however they could, to let Taylor be free and safe. This is much like how the younger generation protested against the war and faught for racial justice. The three apes that helped the man represented the young "rebellious" generation going against the government and adults, which were represented by the older apes.

The planet of the apes was so-so. The movie somewhat related to society and the struggles we have to face. The way we have superior race and the an inferior were portrayed in the different races just like in society. The humans were like animals but they were still human beings like how African Americans and other races were treated as if they were animals but they were human as well.
The way the apes conquered territories and wanted to take over Is the same way the native Americans belonged to this land and the Europeans just took everything another example was the way the Americans took over Hawaii and the Hawaiians became the minorities in there own land. The US though they were doing good for the Hawaiians but in reality they were destroying them.
The elder ape asked questions taylor couldn’t answer they were trying to be superior just like back when voting was an issue for African Americans in the south the whites tried everything in there power to get around that they went so low as having literary test and they knew that the other races would fail because most did not attend school. It’s basically the same concept.
Another scene I have noticed and found interesting was when the apes were capturing the humans like humans capture other species. It gives you the truth how cruel we are towards other species.
The generation gap is also shown in this movie like how the older apes wanted to keep the truth away from the younger apes but the younger apes wanted to find the truth resembles the Vietnam war the way the younger generation wanted to find the truth about the Vietnam war and they rebelled amongst there elders.

If I had watched this movie without the background info I wouldnt have seen it in that point of view. =/

OK, SO RIGHT NOW I'M PRETTY MAD BECAUSE I MADE A REALLY LONG POST, MAYBE ONE OF THE LONGEST THAT I'LL EVER POST AND I WAS COPYING IT JUST IN CASE I GOT THE SECURITY CODE WRONG AND FOR SOME REASON THE CTRL BUTTON DOESN'T WORK ON THIS STUPID APPLE COMPUTER. SO WHEN I HIGHLIGHTED EVERYTHING AND COPIED IT, IT ERASED EVERYTHING AND I CAN'T UNDO IT. I HATE MACS. ANYWAY, IF I CAN REMEMBER ANYTHING THEN I'LL REPEAT AS MUCH AS I CAN. SO I THOUGHT THE MOVIE HAD AN INTERESTING TWIST. I DIDN'T REALLY GET THE BEGINNING THAT MUCH SO THE MOVIE WAS KIND OF WEIRD TO ME. BUT I PRETTY MUCH GOT THE BACKGROUND OF IT. I THINK THIS MOVIE WAS VERY PREDICTABLE AS WELL. ALTHOUGH, ONE THING I COULDN'T PREDICT WAS THE ENDING. THAT WAS THE THING THAT GOT TO ME THE MOST. I WAS REALLY CURIOUS TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM. LIKE I HAD NO CLUE WHAT SO EVER THAT WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIM HAPPENED. I ALSO THOUGHT THAT THE APES WEREN'T GOING TO SPEAK ENGLISH. I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO TALK IN APE AND WE WERE GOING TO HAVE TO READ SUBTITLES. I'M GLAD IT DIDN'T TURN OUT THAT WAY THOUGH. THIS MOVIE RELATES A LOT TO OUR WORLD AND THE DIFFERENT CULTURES THAT ARE HERE. MAYBE JUST NOT CULTURES IN GENERAL, BUT BASICALL THE DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND SOCIETIES WE LIVE IN. IF WE WERE BORN IN A CERTAIN AREA WE'D ONLY KNOW OF THAT AREA AND THINK IT'S THE BEST. LIKE FOR INSTANCE, IF I WAS BORN IN VIETNAM I WOULD THINK WE WERE THE BEST. NOW THE ONLY REASON WHY I WOULD THINK THAT IS BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE BEEN TAUGHT OF ALL THE "GOOD STUFF" THAT VIETNAM HAS HAD AND THE ONLY REASON I WOULD KNOW OF OTHER COUNTRIES AND SUCH IS BECAUSE OF HEARING OF ALL THE BAD STUFF, WELL IN MOST CASES. FOR EXAMPLE, THE APES WERE TAUGHT THAT THEY WERE THE HIGHER POWER OF THEIR WORLD. THEY ONLY KNEW THAT APES WERE INTELLIGENT AND THAT HUMANS WERE USELESS, DUMB, AND MUTES. BUT FOR IN FACT, THAT HUMANS ARE ACTUALLY SMARTER. IT'S EASY TO CONVINCE THOSE WHO ARE CLOSED MINDED. AND IN THIS CASE, THE APES WERE CLOSED MINDED AND THE APE WHO KNEW THE TRUTH WAS VERY CONVINCING AND POWERING. SO HE GOT EVERYONE TO BELIEVE HIM, EVEN IF IT WASN'T THE TRUTH. HE WAS JUST REALLY BIG HEADED AND STUPID. IT KIND OF REMINDS ME OF PEOPLE TODAY. SO MANY PEOPLE ARE CLOSED MINDED. TOO BUSY TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S "IN" BUT WHATEVER. I GUESS THAT'S SOCIETY FOR YOU. I THINK THE APE WHO KNEW EVERYTING IS AN EXAMPLE OF PRESIDENT BUSH. WITH THE WAR AND ALL THAT. LIKE HE'S TELLING US WE NEED TO BE IN A WAR, BUT THE GOOD THING IS WE KNOW THAT WE DON'T NEED TOO. I DON'T KNOW, I'M STILL KINDA MAD ABOUT HOW I LOST ALL MY WRITING. SO I'LL STOP HERE. (:

Planet of the Apes was a good movie. I think I like this orignal version better than the newer version. The monkeys looked more like monkeys here than the old one. One thing that irritated me was how the lady Dr. monkey always twitched in her face. Also, the way that the monkeys kissed was weird. haha. There was a lot of funny things in the movie. That was one of them.

The apes were obviously representing the American leaders during that time. This movie reflected the way us humans act. In the first part of the movie, Taylor took one look at the cavemen people and told his friends that they would easily rule/govern that place within 6 months. That showed us how controlling, manipulative we are and how we take advantage of the weak. I think that part was to show how the president or the other leaders took advantage of everyone. Then once the apes came, everything changed. I think that could also show how minorities can fight back and come through. This is looking at it before we figure out that the monkeys were the boss around that place. But after knowing that the monkeys weren't the minority, the human's status changed. Now that the monkeys were in charge, the humans were the ones left in distress. This movie disrupted the whole status quo of human life.

Well, the idea of superiority was all about in this movie. I think that's how us Americans are like. A lot of Americans think that they're better than other races. This movie made me realize about how we treate people can either cause good results or bad ones. In the movie the humans were put into cages and were being examined, made me think about how the animals we put in cages feel. Since animals can't tlak we won't no what their feeling. In the movie, Taylor was the only one that could talk so we had an insight about how animals feel in there. The want to get out, and the urge to escape.

science fiction films have never really caught my attention, yet the metaphors in “the Plant of the Apes” did. society is the basis to the metaphors . today man is known as the superior race, as in 1968 mans superior race was strongly underlined by race its self. Meaning, not just any man was able to excel in becoming superior, it had to be a specific (race) type of man. In the film apes were given different duties depending on their type, for example you didn’t see much diversity in the apes’ army, they all looked the same. In 1968 you saw the same scenarios taking place for society until Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were both assassinated revolution began to attract the peoples attention.

Change was big at this time. society’s problems began to get questioned. Why was humanity the way it was? For this the film seemed to mock the human culture in a sense. we saw the apes race follow ridicules rules and actions; yet, we never realized that that’s how ridicules our race is living.

by the way i suggest you read "Body rituals of the Nacirema" and see if you could make some more connections...

I just want to start off by saying i apologize for the late blurty. I've seen this movie before, as a younger age, but i kinda forgot the concept of the film, and its great how you the teacher explains the significance of the movie in a way like no other.
This film was a very good film with an eerie feeling to it, especially seeing the apes as the dominant figure, really can't imagine us humans being the ones treated like animals. And for this film to bring that concept back to life its pretty scary. But this way of portrayal was very catchy to the people and made them think.
To see the scene where Taylor was on trial, it was very frustrating to me, because they had the power and they used it to keep the man down! If u know what i mean, its so the same in our society when the majority feels threaten againts some minority, they try to use their power to prevent any outbreaks, just like the US to vietnam, or the US to any nation. When they feel a threat they don't want it to get out of hand so they plug that threat right away, even though sometimes they are in the wrong. Another comparison about that specific scene is when the times in the US when equal rights was not practiced like the time of the early century, if you were black or asian or hispanic, non white, you didn't get an equal trial or and equal anything, because even though you maybe in the right, the stronger majority race would win because its 50 againts 1, but it only takes a couple of strong uprising or voices to revert the majority. Example Martin Luther King Jr., BOb marley,etc...The effects may not be instant but through time, it helps pave a way for equality among people in the US.

I totally forgot about this blurty. Sorry.!!=/!!

I thought the movie was pretty good but very long. The apes were very funny looking and their clothes reminded me of startrack. I was getting so mad because of the way they were treating taylor. But when you think about it they are acting like humans and taylor was the other spieces(the animal).
The ending was very unexpected. When i saw that the staute of Liberty i was like no way!!! They were on earth the whole time. When Taylor realize what happpen he was just soo pisssed off and like ughh!!! It wasn't making any sense but that's why the main old ape let taylor go because he knew what was out there already and wanted taylor to see it with his own two eyes. Because i dont think Taylor would have believed him if he told him he was on Earth the whole time. But i woudnt believe him either. i would have to see it to believe it. i would need good proof and in the movie it was seeing the statue of liberty. Many people are like this to. They have to see it to believe it. It's just human nature to resond like this. People need evidene to believe things. The apes in the movie didnt think that humans could be "trained or domestic" but that all change when Taylor came along. Apes gasped when they heard Taylor speak and wanted to cut him open to explain how it was all possible.

When people start questioning the government that was the start of it all. They began to think they were being lied to and the people began to PROTEST!!!
The government was very afraid in losing their power. When Taylor started questioning the ape government they were not going to have it. They did things thier way with no questions asked and thats how they wanted to kept it.
For example when taylor made the paper air plane the lady ape was like fly?? and the Old ape was like nosense things cant fly and when taylor tried to explain he just shut him up and tosssed the paper air plane. If they dont understand it , then they dont want to know about it. Its as simple as that.

I liked how taylors girlfriend was just there the whole time. It was like the lights are on but no ones home. That how the apes wanted to keep all the humans.. I really like how they aged very slow just be being in the air bubble thing and taking a shot of something. They really need to invent something like that so we dont get old =] as fastt.

I can see how The Planet of the Apes was a product of 1968. The only woman of the spaceship aged to death, can this possibly reflect the Feminist movement? The black guy was shot in the back by a monkey riding a horse, symbolizes the racial tension of the time. Most of the apes in socity were prejudice to the humans, their doctrine or religion resembled that of the Bible, maybe this shows the battle animal and nature activism? The statue of Liberty, which symbolizes freedom, is dug half way in the ground, which challenges the very meaning of the word reflected in society.
Culture had an affect on the film in that the apes think that they were better than every one else, their own religious doctrines were the ones that warranted the prejudice. This film affects our psychology in that it makes us think if we have treated people the way the apes treated the humans, and if one thinks there is a possibility of that one sympathizes the pain that the victims might have felt. It makes one feel like they should analyze the laws and beliefs of our world and see if there are built in prejudices like the apes had against the humans.
Some truths that are revealed in the movie is that humans have a natural tendency for violence, repeated acts fighting are throughout the film. Humans also have a natural tendency to steal and to be curious of what we do not know. In the beginning to mid part of the movie the primitive humans steal the astronaut’s clothing as a result of their curiosity.
Parallels that I see between The Planet of the Apes and our world today is the violence and prejudice. It is all around us, from the Middle East to our front door. Gang violence associated with people of the same race killing other gang members affiliated with the other. The Muslims fighting the Jews fighting the Christians, often times the senseless killing is warranted with perverted religion.

planet of the apes was a good movie. or actually it was ok. it was pretty easy to predict what was going to happen next. like how in the beginning they thought they could run the planet when the saw all the "stupid" people running around the grass, it was pretty easy to guess that wasn't going to be the case. a line that i can remember that relates to the 60's is when the told the teen age ape to "never trust anyone over thirty". this is easy to see how it relates to the youth of the 60's. the movie did act as a metaphor itself. with all the war and violence going around it was clearly seen that the writers of the movie meant that the world could turn out like that someday. or maybe they meant people are more stupid than a stupid ape. i wouldn't really know, i didn't write the movie. the movie seemed to try to point out the flaws of humanity. it did a pretty good job, nothing didn't seem to changed even in modern times. there is still war over things that don't even matter like oil. why did they even fight the Vietnam war? to make America look better? why didn't they pull out of the war? so they didn't look stupid for wasting all that effort for nothing? i guess the youth started to question a lot of things after this movie came out. I'm sure i caused a lot of conflict in its time.

An aspect of this film that can relate to cultural would be the power struggle between the humans and the apes. Everywhere we go, there is always some type of tension—whether it is at school, work, home, etc. At school, students try to be better than other students so that they can stand out. As for work, a person has to work their hardest so that they can move up in position. At home, there is a constant struggle between parents and their students—one always thinks the other is wrong; no acceptance. This I would say is similar to the movie where the humans can’t accept the fact that the apes were now in control. Before they left Earth, everything was fine and the humans were still at the top of the ladder. But after they landed on “another” planet, they noticed that there was no civilization there. It was completely dry and desert-like, and humans were being killed/captured by the apes; a world that was the opposite of the proposed Earth.

The culture and ways of the apes were far harsher than that of the humans. They captured humans and kept them in cages like animals. As for the humans that could talk, they gave them surgeries that prevented them from speaking any further—thus trying to protect the idea that humans were once at the top. This idea affects our psychology because of the scientific theory that humans evolved from apes, but in this movie the idea is vice versa. The apes did everything that they could to set rules and regulations, creating a civilization run by some type of government. One wouldn’t think that things could turn around in this world, but this film clearly portrays that. We, as humans, may be at the top of the ladder, but we never know when things can change. This movie shows that the world isn’t “perfect” and that things are clearly subject to change regardless of the effort put in to prevent change.

The truth revealed about human nature was that humans fight. For example, the main character was locked up but found ways to get out. He believed that there was something wrong in the area with the apes. He knew that humans were at the top, and he fought for the idea by excavating the cave with the other scientist apes. He didn’t give up until he found prove to give to head apes. Another truth revealed was that humans always want more than what they have. For example, the main character could have just survived living at the apes’ campsite, but he didn’t want that. He wanted to live his normal life back on Earth, even though realistically he was on Earth.

Some parts of the film's aspects that I felt had related to culture were how the apes locked up the human people in cages like they were animals. When Taylor was the only human that had the ability to talk and think just like the rest of the apes, they didn't want to give him rights or treat him like an equal so I think that discrimination and segregation in the 60's and the civil rights movements relates to that. Then there was also the part that the apes had discovered artifacts of the past and that Taylor found out that he had ended up back home, that the people that lived thousands of years before had destroyed the plains, and that's sort of culture now, how we are destroying the earth and that people back in the 60's believed that the world was going to "end".
When they were showing the apes and the humans, then Taylor, someone who had the same ability of the apes, it showed the real problem of segregation on the big screen. African Americans had struggled with the problem or unequal rights with whites in the U.S. and were going through their civil rights movement.
The truths that are revealed in "human" nature are that we are just barely small steps from savagry. Alot of the time, people don't realize, or they don't think about what consequences will take place from their actions.

The planet of the Apes portrayed the truths of how humans were being treated badly because of the fact that they would destroy earth one day. When the apes took over it degraded the whole human evolution. Humans were being treated badly because of the harmful effects they were causing earth. Using human beings as experiments were seen through the eyes of the apes. The apes were experimenting them because of how they were deconstructing the human brain. It is strange for apes to act as if there are human beings because of the way they were brought into this world. The human beings were being mistreated as animals that once the apes felt like that before. It’s ironic for me to see this happening because of how humans who once controlled earth are being taken over by apes. Many truths are revealed about human nature of how they are being hunted as prey and bait to discover more scientific knowledge of human beings that once almost destroyed earth. It was very rare for an ape to show compassion to a human being because of how they were being treated like dirt. That ape that helped Taylor saw hope and knowledge that would influence her science and philosophy. I saw that Taylor who traveled back in time came back where he started at the end of the movie. Its so ironic how he thought he was from another planet when really he was at earth.

Planet of the apes was a good movie. At first it was a bit boring but when they discovered that there was life on that planet it stated to get more interesting. I admit I had never seen any of the planet of the apes this one nor the new one. But I admit even if it's not type of movie I enjoyed it.

I was really surprised when the apes were the authority and the humans were the animals. I didn't really expect that. I noticed that when the leader found out that Taylor could talk he wanted to no one to find out because I think he was a little scared that maybe this man would try to teach all the others humans to speak and they can possibly be replaced or they can probably take over their planet.

In the end it was kind of shocking to find out that all long Taylor was on earth and not on some other planet. All the apes were trying to avoid him finding out the truth but eventually he did. I think Taylor felt like all cause was lost when he found out the sad truth.

we don't think it is reasonable to spend hundreds thousands dollars to buy a decorating watch. you can use those money to invest in other industry which will return you good profit.
here you just need to spend 100-200 dollars to buy a replica rolex watches.
IWC replica watches are made by the rating 1:1 according to the original watches, and you can't distinguish the original and the fake watches when you look at the surface of the watches.
