    Chapter 2

He loved the feeling that the cold night air brought to him. The soft breeze blew over his body and for the first time in weeks his entire body finally relaxed. School, friends, band and so many other things occupied his mind lately; he needed this night to be completely alone. He knew it wouldn’t last very long, Jenia would end up finding him and would want to stay. He found a nice place to sit on the grass; perfect view of the city lights and the stars. He never wanted to leave; the night was his favorite part of the day but that is usually the case with people who live in Arizona. He checked his watch and groand. He felt as if he had just got there but in reality it was over an hour and a half.
He stretched out his body and sat up. The bushes near him shook slightly, the boy froze and stared at it. As if he were waiting for something to jump out at him. Slwoly he got to his feet and backed away when a loud howl broke the still night.
“What the hell?” he called out. He spun around trying to find out where the cry had come from. Once his heartbeat slowed he decided it was about time to head home. He turned to leave but out of the corner of his eye he saw a little girl running along the path towards him. She had to be no more than eight years old. As she got closer, he could see that her clothes were torn and filthy. There were leaves stuck in her wild blonde hair and there were dark spots on her face.
“Help me! Oh god please help me!” the little girl cried. He had no idea what to do so he held out his arms and let her crash into him. She was so tiny and frail in his arms.
“What happened to you?” he asked kneeling down beside her; getting a better look. Cuts littered her tiny body and he knew that they had not been made by her falling down.
“She’s coming after me, you have to get me out of here,” She screamed frantically, her small hands pulling at his shirt.
“Who’s coming after you?” he asked. The little girl stared past his face and her eyes grew wide with terror. He looked over his shoulder and saw a myst moving through the night air. Something is very wrong he thought to himself. There could be no way a mist could travel that fast in Arizona, it was the middle of March.
“That’s her, please we must go,” she pleaded pulling on his arm. He was about to follow the girl when he saw a dark figure moving towards them in the fog. His curioustity got the best of him, he wanted very badly to know who this person was. He was so transfixed on the figure, he didn’t even notice that the little girl had backed away and was now staring hungerliy at his neck.
As the figure drew closer, he could make out a rather large sword in one hand and a crossbow in the other. He gasped as she came into full view under the moonlight. She had dark blood red hair that fell in silky waves to her waist. The wind seemed to dance around her, guiding her way through the fog. She looked up at him and his heart fluttered for a moment. Her eyes reminded him of a winter sunset. Indigo on the outside and as it got closer to the pupils the color seemed to get lighter. He couldn’t stop staring at her as she slowly got closer. She stopped only a few feet away and looked past him at the child who pressed herself against a nearby tree.
“Are ye protectin the child?” the woman said, her accent thick and throaty. It took him a few moments to get passed his nerves and speak.
“What do you want with her exactly?’ he asked.
“That would be none of your business,” She replied hastily. She made a quick movement and threw something.
“Whoah!” he yelled out as something flew past his head. He heard a thump followed by an ear piercing shriek. He turned around and cried out. The little girl was pinned to the tree by her right shoulder. She hissed and tried pulling on her shoulder, he winced when more blood poured down her shirt.
“What are you doing! She’s only a little girl!” he hollard at the woman who was now smirking at him. He made a move towards the little girl but stopped short when she growled at him, her eyes growing dark and deadly. She slashed her long fingernails in the air, pulling harder to free herself.
“That is no ordinary child my dear boy,” the woman said plainly. The little girl screamed and finally freed her shoulder from the tree, the dagger fell to the ground with a soft thud. She gingerily ran her hand over the wound as it instantly began to heal itself. He had to blink a few times before he could register what he had just saw. The little girl growled and pounced on him sending them both to the ground. He tired to push her off of him, screaming as she snapped her teeth at his face. The next thing he knew was that the woman swung her sword and sent the child flailing through the air. He sat up on his elbows and saw that the woman had put one of her feet on the girl’s chest, holding her in place. She raised her sword and pointed the tip of it at her throat.
“Where is she?” The woman asked quietly.
“Go to hell,” She spat out. The woman shook her head and shoved the word into the girl’s throat. He opened his mouth and tried to scream but nausea took over him. He rolled over and threw up.
“Get up,” he heard the woman say. He started to turn his head but saw the blade near his face.
“Don’t look at me, just get up,” she ordered. He shook his head, careful not to cut himself on the blade.
“I said get up you bloody bastard, I’m not gonna hurt ya,” she said grabbing his arm and pulling him roughly to his feet. She grabbed his chin with one hand and ran her finger on the side of his neck as if looking for something.
“She didn’t bit ya,” she said with wonder.
“Why did you kill her?” he asked tears forming into his eyes. He was so afraid that this strange woman would kill him as well.
“She was mad crazy, didn’t ye notice that? Someone had to put her out of her misery,” She said bluntly. She walked over to the girl’s lifeless body and started dragging her away by her ankle.
“Wait, stop. What do you think you are doing? She belongs to her parents,” he roared grabbing her arm. She looked over her shoulder and glared at him. He felt his heart speed up and his mouth grow dry from the sudden panic growing inside of him. His vision became very blurry as he tried to look at her.
“Her parents are long dead and if you wish to escape their fate you best be taken ye hand off me,” She replied jerking her arm free from his grip.
“Who are you?” He whimpered falling to his knees, he fought against the sudden drowsiness over coming him.
“Shandra,” she whispered in his ear before he blacked out.

“Josh, wake up! We’re going to be late for school! Now…get up!” Jenia yelled in his ear. He groaned and rolled over, trying to block out her nagging voice. He opened his eyes to find himself in his own room. It was all a dream, he thought to himself. He shook his head and tried to move his body.
“Oh god, ow,” He hissed. Every inch of his body was sore and ached.
“Where the hell were you last night? Mom about had a fit when you didn’t come home,” Jenia said angrily. She looked down at him and waited for an answer. Josh could understand why she was so angry with him. Whenever he did anything wrong, she would be blamed for it. Jenia had talents and dreams that their parents were not very proud of and thought they were a waste, such as writing, dancing and photography. She excelled in each of them but never got the kudos from the parents. Josh felt so angry with them sometimes when they would put all of their pride onto him…he hated it.
“I can’t remember,” he replied keeping his eyes on the floor. It was only half true, he could remember being in the park but that was all.
“What do you mean you can’t remember Josh? Oh god, don’t tell me you were drinking with Garret again?”
“Jenia, please. I wasn’t drinking and you know it!”
“Oh yeah your wonderful sob story, wrong place and wrong time…”
“You should know me better than that,” he said with annoyance. He couldn’t stand how his twin sister wouldn’t believe him. They had been so close and the night he got caught while his bestfriend was drinking, she still held a grudge against him.
“Then why can’t you remember where you were?” She asked softening a bit. She sat next to him on the bed and leaned up against him. Josh had to smile…he was just happy she wasn’t mad at him anymore.
“All I can remember is that I was taking a walk in the park, I layed down for a bit and then…” Josh started but stopped, he suddenly had a flash of a face, “Shandra.”
“Shandra? Oh my god! You had sex with some girl last night?” Jenia exclaimed with great disgust.
“What? No, I mean…I don’t know. I met this strange woman last night and I can’t even remember why she was even there.”
“Wow, she must have been very pretty to make you forget something. Come on, we’re gonna be so late,” Jenia said with a laugh. She ruffled his hair and left the room, leaving her brother even more confused.

Josh looked up at the big gray and blue building and felt a sudden rush of relief. Being at school took his mind away from many a thing that was bothering him and he knew that it would take him away from last night events. On the way to school, Josh had remembered every little thing that had happened the night before. He had become very quiet and distant which was so unlike him and of course, Jenia had noticed and bugged him about it the whole ride there. He didn’t want to remember the death of the mysterious little girl or the strange woman who had taken her life. He didn’t know what to do…he could feel the brink of a panic attack approaching but he swallowed it down, knowing that no one would believe him anyway.
