Malam Gemilang
I'm sitting in Hanim and Jaime's living room now and I have Jane's Addiction new video playing on the TV behind me. God these dudes should really stop acting like they're the coolest things on earth. They're all dressed up like washed up has-been rockstars and they're acting like they're the newest thing on the block. Do young ppl still listen to stuff like this? I think the song's called "Just Because" and btw, it sux big time.
Went to the UMNO organised Malam Gemilang tonite. Keong didn't believe me when I told him it was organised by UMNO. He said "UMNO??? Don't fucking lie to me laaa! You might as well say Mahathir is coming!"
Seriously Keong, I wasn't kidding. I dunno why its so hard to believe tho. Anyway, abt the nite, I havent seen so many malay ppl in Melbourne before. Like, there was a whole ballroom full of 'em! When reading this you have to appreciate the fact that where I live in Clayton, there are probably like a little more than 20 malay students. In my Hall itself, there are only 2! Me and my sis!
I'm always surrounded by chinese malaysians, white aussies, and other ppl of various ethnicity. So walking into a ballroom filled with malay ppl was abit of a rare experience here in Melbourne. Plus we're not just talking bout kampung malay ppl. Quite the opposite actually.
I know this sounds weird, but being in such a situation was both slightly intimidating and refreshing for both me and Hanim, who I went with. Why this is so requires a long chat over coffee and biscuits. Those interested call me. Anyway, the night wasn't that bad. Made a few new friends, saw a pretty good performance that involved a circle of indonesian gendang players (which was quite impressive), and saw some tarian melayu. That was nice.
Anyway, caught a cab back and then me and Hanim had supper on Chapel. I was hoping Jaime was going to be awake when we got back but the wombat was sleeping. I miss her heaps so I stuck a note on her door with a picture of a crudely drawn wombat.
Tomorrow I need to wake up early and do some shopping, then I need to make it back to Halls in time for Hannah's "Express Yourself" function. It involves canvases put around the courtyard and ressies painting 'em with their hands or other body parts. Its part of her Community Outreach portfolio.
International Nite's being quite the bitch. I need to go to uni and ask the Activities ppl abt getting a soundguy, and I need to call catering companies abt renting hot food bars. Also need to collect the hopefully good scripts from Dale and go thru whatvr torture and suffering he's planned for me and the rest of my stairway.
Ugh. Getting cold. Time to go to bed.
