Per.1 H American Literature November 9, 2005 Time is Valuable Benjamin Franklin accomplished many achievements in his lifetime that no one will ever forget. For example, he discovered electricity, invented bifocals, and wrote a book titled Poor Richard’s Almanac. Today, we still use all of his inventions, and the aphorisms that he wrote in Poor Richard’s Almanac still apply to our everyday lives. An aphorism is a brief phrase of truth or opinion. One of the aphorisms Ben Franklin wrote was, “Wasting of time must be, the greatest prodigality.” Time is precious and no one knows how much time they have left. It is necessary for people to make use of their time and not to waste it. In the aphorism, “Wasting of time must be, the greatest prodigality,” Franklin is stating that wasting time is the worst thing that one could do with their life. As Americans, we have to opportunity to make a difference in the world that we live in. We could help those in need, get an education, discover a cure for cancer, and much more. Franklin is a prime example of someone who used his time wisely and we have all of his inventions and discoveries as evidence. It is very important that I donate all my time to my schoolwork and to extracurricular activities. I feel that being involved in school or something that you excel in, keeps one out of trouble. Wasting your time really is the greatest prodigality. With your free time, you could read a book or learn something new, rather than spending your time on the couch, wasting your life away.
