The break came when he met Latif at another London safe depository, realized that Latif was desperate for money, and persuaded him that an "inside job" at Latif's own vault could solve all their problems. It was an opportunity for the "ultimate designer robbery" as Viccei later called it; and he busied himself recruiting a motley bunch of fellow-criminals to help pull it off. Israel Pinkas, a cash-strapped Israeli businessman he had become friendly with over the past year, signed on as accountant. Pinkas's wife, Hava, knew all along that Viccei was "evil" but her husband would have none of it and even lent Viccei 10,000 to buy a sports car on one occasion, having just borrowed the money in Israel to help his own struggling business. Needless to say, Viccei never repayed the loan. Stephen Mann, a cocaine addict whose habit Viccei was happy to satisfy, was roped in as one of the minor players, an errand boy who went shopping at Selfridges for the chisels and sledge-hammers to open the boxes, and he helped cart the loot around in the days after the raid. Peter O'Donohue and David Poole, London-based unemployed minor criminals, were promised a healthy reward for taking part in the robbery itself. And Viccei allegedly turned to Eric Rubin, a 50-year-old Russian-born naturalized American with whom he is said to have worked before, to act as his right-hand man. NOTHING REALLY should have gone wrong. After all, with the vault's owner in on the job, no prospect of police arriving on the scene, and untold, undocumented wealth in Links of London Charmall around them, the gang had every opportunity to pull off the job smoothly. But they blew it completely, and no one was more to blame than the smiling, strutting Viccei himself. Unable to contain his delight at the sheer volume of sparkling jewelry and gold all around him, Viccei got utterly carried away, smashing open the boxes with gay abandon and finally catching his finger on the jagged metal corner of one broken box. The metal sliced through Viccei's rubber glove, piercing the skin and drawing blood. Post a comment in response: |
